New Joiners - Landscapes #540

July 2021

I really like this, it's a striking image and has a good visual impact. It's maybe a little heavy on the vignette however it does direct your eyes to the falls so it works in a way. The sky is a little dark, it doesn't quite match the rest of the scene so I'd consider lightening this a bit!

I like this, nice and simple and has a feel good summer vibe to it. The foreground is a little messy but I think the scattering of colour in the flowers works in it, organised chaos! The clouds are good too, not that you have much control over them but they are not overbearing.

This is great, it's got everything! Lovely composition, perfect exposure, loads of interest and it's nice and sharp. I really really like this, well worth the effort and putting up with the mosquitos! It's a bonus the small lake is really still, I think had it been windy it'd have ruined the shot, although it could have been a blessing in disguise as the mosquitos wouldn't have bothered you in the wind! Well done and a worthy winner :)

I love this, it's beautifully simple and uncluttered. The muted colours work well and it's composed with consideration. The only thing that stopped me from choosing this as number 1 is the sign, I know it's there and cloning it out could be considered cheating or what not but it pulls my eye a little. Maybe an ever so slightly tighter crop could remove it but still retain the great overall look the photo has. Nice job :)

Amazing colours and reflections. Autumn is easily the best season for photographs, when you get that golden light catching the trees it's just magic. I'd maybe tone down the saturation just a tad as the blues are very strong, you'd still have a great image with the colours toned down maybe 10%. Nice job

I'm not really a fan of rock stacks, but in this case I can make an exception. It works well in the overall composition and adds to it rather than distracting. I like the long exposure in the water, the misty look and the wet rocks give plenty to look at.

I think this has potential to be a really nice shot, there's a couple of things I'd maybe tweak though. I think there's an awful lot of sky in there, you could quite easily crop this to 16:9 or even 2:1 and still keep all that great looking landscape in it without it feeling lost. I'd also clone out the car and the gate as they stand out like a sore thumb. It wouldn't take much to elevate this shot! Hope you don't mind my feedback!

Great atmosphere and mood! I do like a landscape that has some anger to it, this looks very apocalyptic. I like that there's a lack of man-made things (I know you said you removed a lighthouse) but it gives a good sense of desolation and wildness. I'd have this on the wall it looks spot on.

This is awesome, it blows my mind that places like this actually exist. Every time I see photos from here it makes me want to visit more and more. I like the back story too, it's a lovely memory for you and your mum. The colours are amazing, and that early morning light os working a treat to light it all up. Well done, a really nice shot.

Catbells is a great fell to watch a sunrise from, it's got a great shape and gives a fantastic view of Skiddaw and Derwentwater. It's one of my favourite walks in the Lakes for the reason. I like the contrast in the foreground between the shadows and the early morning light, and compositionally it's nice too. There's nothing that distracts the eyes and the colours are simple and warm. Nice job.

A really pleasing image, nicely composed and good thinking behind using the rocks as foreground. A couple of things to consider when taking photos like this, you need to make sure the water is totally level as otherwise the photo looks to have a lean on it. Also exposure wise I'd have maybe shot it a little darker just to protect the highlights in the sky and give a bit more detail to the clouds.

A canny result for a hard walk. The colours reflected in Loch Leathan are spot on and the overall exposure is nice and even. I'm always torn as to whether to include the big rock on the right, on one hand it shows an impressive sense of scale but on the other hand it takes my eye away from the Storr. Including it means having loads and loads of sky too, which can unbalance the image somewhat. I prefer a tighter crop, however that's just my preference and not taking anything away from this as it's a lovely photo :)

Compositionally this is really nice, with good placement of the tree so it's not obscured by the hills. You see plenty of shots from here that aren't considered and look messy. I think you could have lightened the shadows a little more, it's pretty dark at the bottom but looks like it could be recovered well. I noticed you used f4.5 for this, you'd get a sharper image throughout if you stopped down your aperture to say f11 for this type of shot. Nice shot overall :)

I like the idea here, the town looks great and really interesting. Compositionally I think it's a little tight, the town is very close to the bottom and the mountain doesn't have any room at the top. It's exposed well and the colours are nice, and I like the low cloud hugging the mountains.

Ordinarily, I don't like photos coloured this way but I can see why you've done it, keeping with the style of paintings of this area. It needs a tiny bit of clockwise rotation to straighten the uprights a little. I like the broken reflection in the water, and compositionally its pretty well laid out. Nice job
