This is a competent seascape that demonstrates an understanding of composition and how elements in the frame can balance each other out. The best examples of that in this image is the patterns on the rocks in the foreground echoing the foliage of the rock face, and the white surf of the crashing waves echoing the clouds above. There's also a nice contrast in colour between the different blues and greens. It's an image that has atmosphere, well done.

Piers, such as this one, can act as wonderful compositional tools, leading the viewers eye into the heart of the image, and this photo is no exception that particular rule. The silhouetted pier marching out into the water is very effective, especially when framed by the colours of sunset and the impending inky night sky. The long exposure has smoothed out the sea which adds some motion to an otherwise still narrative, but the dust spots in the middle of the frame are quite distracting. It would be worth seeing if you can remove these in post to ensure the image is as impactful as possible.

There's something about this image that feels otherworldly. It may be the desert scene which feels like it's right off a movie set, but it's also the processing. The muted colours in the sky and the warm tones throughout just give it a real sense of atmosphere, almost as if I'm looking at a photo of Mars. The fluffy clouds provide some texture in the sky, and the rocks themselves are fascinating in structure and texture. Intriguing image that definitely caught my attention.

This is a nicely done waterfall image that uses the surrounding trees and forest to help frame the waterfall. Using the technique of long exposure adds a little bit of movement to an otherwise static image, and gives life to the water. I particularly like the flow of the water moving in from the left of the frame. The water at the bottom of the frame is a little blown out. To counter this, you could have reduced the time of the long exposure to protect your highlights or bracketed your image to retain plenty of the detail.

Quite often I say the best camera is the one that you have on you, and this is a wonderful demonstration of that principal. You've used your iPhone to great effect, with some strong storytelling in this image. Without the freight train, the panoramic would still be interesting, but the train really adds to the narrative, weaving through the landscape and creating a lovely leading line from the front of the image to the back. The hazy mountains in the distance compliment the greens in the foreground and the pop of red on the engine lifts the whole composition. This is a cracking image, well seen!

There's plenty going on in this image, from the mountains in the background the to trees and boats in the foreground. I like that you have captured one of the boats in the middle of the frame heading away from the shore. It's evident that you witnessed a beautiful, colourful scene and have tried to capture this in one frame. I would say that the colours, although beautifully bright and bold, are a little too unreal in places. This of course is a personal preference, but backing off some of the saturation may well provide some interesting, different results.

Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Animals’.

Love the mood in this image. Not sure when it was captured, but the tones are reminiscent of the predawn light that can be so alluring. Using the natural line of the loch to separate the water from the land is enhanced by the movement close to shore. The variation in the cloud above the hills breaks up the sky and adds some atmosphere. Unfortunately the foliage that has crept into frame at the bottom pulls the eye away from the image, and if you could remove this in post it would make the image even more impactful.

In this image you've done really well to capture the moody atmosphere. The storm that is drifting over the landscape provides a sense of foreboding, with that hint of rain. This contrasts well with the brighter foreground, and the colour palette is consistent throughout. The composition may well have been improved by cutting out some of the rough terrain in the foreground which is a little distracting. Still, this is an effective image, well captured.

Gosh, this is the kind of image that makes we want to jump straight into it. I can feel the warm and imagine the cool breeze coming in from the ocean. The colours you've captured really help to enhance this feeling, especially the graduation in the blue to turquoise as the coast becomes the beach. The landscape contrasts with it's yellows and greens, building in a natural s-curve to the composition with the natural line of the land. The boats help to balance out the composition. Nicely done.

I think this is one of those images that could easily be overlooked with a cursory glance, but there is just so much going on that it pulled me in and demanded I paid attention to all the myriad of intriguing features. The angle you've chosen really helps with the mystery of the composition and I'm left wandering what I'm looking at. There's some gorgeous textures in the foreground with colours that compliment the foliage to the right. There's a waterfalls in the middle of the rocks that almost seem like they're from a theme park. Perhaps they are. Either way, this is a magical image with great intrigue that's been well seen and captured.

As I was judging this cohort of images, this one stood out to me for several reasons. Firstly, it's a well known landmark, but you've made an effort to capture it in a different way. Secondly, the processing really appealed. It's monochrome, but there's a real lightness to the image, it's almost a little high-key. I like the effect of the pano and the people who are scattered around the foreground gives a sense of scale to the architecture. Nicely worked image.

I love the concept of this image. The lure of a lone lighthouse alone on the beach is hard to resist and your positioning of this particular lighthouse in the centre of the frame works well. The long exposure adds to the atmosphere, especially as the cloud is fast moving towards the edges of the frame and is mirrored by the blowing sand. I would say the colours detract a little from the image, as the those blues are overwhelming. Backing them off a smidge in post would likely give a more even tone throughout. However, I appreciate you might be going for that dramatic blue mood. Nevertheless this is an evocative image.

This image has a lovely feel to it, and could easily pass for some album artwork. I love the contrast between the green grass of the foreground with the deep blues of the sky, the pink house sitting in the middle as the main focal point. The square composition works and the clouds drifting across the sky have an almost Pixar feel to them. The only frustration is that the house isn't fully in the middle of the frame and a quick crop would make the image even more impactful.

This image demonstrates an understanding of how to position the different elements of an image in the frame for effect. The low angle enables the flowers to fill up the bottom right and add a dash of colour to proceedings. The textures of the driftwood and rocks beyond contrast well with the delicate nature of the flowers. My only criticism is that the horizon is a little wonky which throws the composition off. I appreciate that if you straightened the image you might lose those flowers, so it might be worth keeping an eye on the horizon before hitting the shutter button when you're next out taking photos.
