New Joiners - Landscapes #557

September 2021

There's so much going on in this image that I don't quite know what to make of it. I can only assume it's a composite of several image that has been worked into one rather surreal composition, but seeing as you give no details, I can't be sure how many. I'm not against composites, as they have their place in the world of digital art, and this certainly pulls in the eye. I love the sweep that moves from left to right, pulling the viewer to the mountains and sky behind. The lighting is also rather lovely. Perhaps in future, including a bit more information about your process would help others understand what exactly they're looking at and experiencing. However, this shows strong creativity and processing skills.

There's plenty of drama in this image that you've captured. That bank of cloud that is seemingly, and ominously, moving towards the coastline. You've done well to manage what is a rather expansive dynamic range, maintaining that mood and keeping details in the beach and pier beyond. Some images just have an inbuilt narrative and this is a great example of that. I'm left wondering about the incoming storm when it reaches the shore. Intriguing shot!

Whenever I've teaching photography, one of the big things that I find people struggle with is excluding the sky, especially when it adds little to the final image. This is one of those examples when you've instinctively excluded the sky (which I'm assuming was overcast) to the benefit of the composition. By doing so, you've compressed the frame and made something where the elements really sit well together, from the colourful flowers in the foreground, the boat in the mid ground and the bridge beyond, framed by the trees in the background. Really nicely seen and captured.

This is a classic view, but for good reason. Anything with the iconic NYC skyline included has a little bit of grandeur about it. The atmosphere is enhanced by the glorious sunset that is occurring, bringing in some dramatic sidelight and illuminating the clouds and the water. The bridge itself provides a diagonal line in contrast to the verticals of the skyscrapers. However, you are suffering from some distortion of the bridge and the buildings that could be corrected in post to give even more pleasing results. Nice take on a familiar scene.

I'm a huge fan of wintery scenes and there's plenty about this image that I love from the frozen trees to the snow encroaching on the road. I like how you've composed so the yellow lines track down the middle of the image and add some colour to an image that is otherwise quite muted. What would have improved this image is a better angle. The sky is probably the least interesting part of the composition, yet it's taking up the most space. Concentrating more on the trees and the snow would have helped to balance out the photo.

You've managed to capture some remarkable atmosphere in this particular image. The mist drifting through the scene gives the feel of a painting, and the swoop of the riverbank works well to lead the eye into the composition. I like the still water and the reflection it's creating, as well as the muted tones and colours. I'd consider cropping out the trees on the right that are encroaching on the scene because they're a little distracting. Overall, a pleasing image, well done.

I wonder how many people who've been on a trip to Skye have been enamoured by this lovely farmhouse that sits so perfectly within the frame? I know that I've happily taken dozens of images of it, and it's so appealing for good reason. With the mountainscape behind, and the river in front, it acts as the glue that holds together the composition, permeating through the natural tones with it's bright, white exterior. I like that you've used the sweep of the river bank to lead in the eye and the fresh greens contrast well with the house and mountains. The flat light creates an even tone throughout, and overall this is a pleasing composition.

There is a wonderful simplicity to this shot, which I can imagine was hard to compose for and convey. Often the compositions that take the greatest care and thought are those that rely on a few basic elements to convey the narrative. Here we have the beach in the foreground, and the dark silhouettes of the rocks on either side. Then there is the woodland behind and the glorious sun filtering through those trees. In the distance there are a couple of figures walking along just adding some sense of scale. All in all, this is a delightful, atmospheric image.

If landscape photography is about capturing the feeling of any particular moment, then this is a magnificent example. This image has loads of atmosphere and personality., with the moody sky dispersing the sunlight. What really makes this image is the silhouetted outline of the kayak and the small ripples it has left in the still water. It transports the viewer into the scene. My only slight criticism is that the sun is slightly cut off at the top of the image and that's a little distracting. It would have been great to have a little room between that and the top of the image. That aside, this is an atmospheric and impressive composition.

You don't provide any information about this composition, but I was immediately drawn to the temperature inversion flooding the valley with fog. Oftentimes I find that photographing these kind of conditions can be difficult, because you need something to anchor the composition so it isn't just cloud with no focal point. You do this well by including the land and trees on the right, adding to the mystery of it all. Nicely seen and captured, although a few more details in the description would have been welcome.

There is plenty to like about this image, and I can see why it's called 'Nugget Point'. I like the leading line that is created by the sea stacks moving almost in convoy towards the horizon. The colour of the sea and the colour of the sky compliment each other, despite the lack of light. The only issue is the horizon itself which is a little off-kilter. Still, you demonstrate a clear understanding of composition, well done.

You've captured some lovely light in this image as it bounces off the wooden stairs, the grasses beneath and the waves beyond. There is also some delightful colour in the sky. However, what really elevates this image is the flock of birds in the sky. It just adds a little something special to an otherwise pedestrian image. Nicely seen.

Landscape photography is all about how the elements in the frame work together with the available light. The light is really the magical factor, whether it's there in abundance or absent altogether. This is a wonderful example of how the light can create the composition. The way it's catching off the agricultural land, casting shadow on some parts and extenuating the undulation of the land in other parts, really elevates the whole composition. The 'cherry on top' as it were, is the red building, contrasting well with the rustic colour of the land below. Nicely seen and nicely captured.

The Outer Hebrides is one of my favourite places in the whole world and this image demonstrates why. The glorious colour of the sea, turquoise and blue, contrasting with the white sand and the rugged Harris hills in the distance. It's hard not to be completely in awe of such a landscape. Of course, this is a popular viewpoint, but for good reason. What really makes this image for me is the two kayaks and people on the sand, providing some incredible scale to the whole scene. Nicely done.
