New Joiners - Landscapes #565

October 2021

Some images aren't necessarily about the composition or even the subject matter. Instead they're more about the emotion and mood of the moment. This is one of those images. The mood is created by that glorious light that is flooding in, illuminating the pier as well as the fisherman. It's got a cinematic feel. Of course, technically there are issues with blown highlights and lens flare as well as the composition, but really that's not the point of the image.

This is a nice rendition of some well worn subject matter. The shapes and textures are just lovely, and pull the eye into the image. The light is soft but picks out all the variation in colour and this is one of the scenes where I want to explore each corner. The arch at the top of the image works well to frame the scene, but that little semi circle of light creeping in becomes very distracting and pulls me out of the image. Other than that, there's plenty to like about this composition.

This is a lovely rendition of an old favourite. There are several aspects of this image that work well. The light dappling the mountains in the background is delightful, adding some contrast to the image. The greenery of the background contrasts with the rusted colours of the shipwreck, which is also catching the warm light. I like the little tuft of green foliage to the left that helps ground the image. Nicely seen and nicely done.

This is a view of Seattle that I haven't seen before and it's indicative of a lot of modern cityscapes. The composition here is intriguing, with the flatter, lowlands of the city leading the eye into the much more built up area populated by skyscrapers. The warm evening light helps to give the image a little bit of a cinematic feel to it, and the detail in the many forms of architecture makes me want to look closer and take it all in. Nicely done.

You have captured some glorious autumnal colours in this image. I love the variation between the colours in the composition. There are the yellows and greens of the trees, the bright white of the bark, the granite colours of the mountains beyond and the gorgeous clear blue of the sky. It all sits together well. Sometimes when images are taken with a telephoto, it's compresses the depth of field and it becomes difficult to know what the focal point of the image is, and this scene suffers from that somewhat. However, the lush colours bring enough interest to the composition.

This image is all about the sense of scale. The way you've composed the scene lends itself to the grandeur of the subject matter, with the angle of the water really demonstrating the power of nature. The small dots of figures on the left hand side enhances this mood even further. The greenery of the foliage is set off by the blue sky above and overall, this is a pleasing image.

I rather enjoyed the simplicity of this image and also the title that you've given it. 'And it got dark' is the perfect description of this composition. The small line of dying light on the horizon, burning with colour, is virtually consumed by the encroaching darkness of the nightfall. Although there is not much happening in the image itself, it has mood, it's got atmosphere and it has emotion.

I really enjoy the lush greens in this photo. There's different variations of green, tracking backwards from the foreground to the woodland beyond. Positioning the stream in the middle of the image works really well as a compositional tool, especially as there's a natural 's-curve' build into it. The only issue is the leaf that's snuck in at the top of the composition that distracts. Crop that out and you'll have an even more satisfying composition!

Photography is all about the interpretation of what we can see in front of us, and each individual is likely to interpret the scene differently. It's what I love about the medium and your image is the perfect illustration of the point. Many would come to this scene and miss the opportunity for the reflection entirely, but your use of it has created something just a tad more interesting. The colours of the lighthouse works with the colour of the sky and I like that you've composed with the lighthouse in the middle so it's always where the eye goes. Nicely seen and composed.

You've capturing some lovely conditions here. Sometimes it can be difficult to convey a sense of scale with misty images, but the fact there is less density in the mist towards the front of the composition helps to delineate between the layers. The warm tone works, with the trees disappearing off into the low cloud behind. The foreground is a little lacking and the composition might well benefit from a tighter crop. Lovely atmospheric image.

The use of depth of field in the image really adds something to the composition. Keeping the cat tails in focus and blurring out the snowy trees beyond provides some separation of the subject matter. The cool tones add to the feeling that it must have been a brutally cold day. A simple image that has been well executed.

You've captured a gorgeous reflection of a beautiful scene in this image. The snow capped peaks provide some contrast to the rest of the granite coloured mountains and the green trees contrast well with the clear blue sky. The exposure is even in both parts of the reflection which is satisfying. I'd advocate for a tighter crop of the left side of the image because the tree that's slightly cut off is a little distracting. Still, nicely captured.

It's a shame that you weren't able to leave more details about this particular image because there's lots going on and I'd be intrigued to know a little more about the subject matter. I like that you've gone with a panoramic crop. The river running through the heart of the image delineates between the warmer tones of the woodland and the cooler tones of the mountains. The atmosphere is enhanced by the low cloud traversing the horizon. Lovely stuff.

I really like what you've done with this image. Sometimes I find using foliage as a framing tool to be lacking, but here it works because of the contrast between the natural world and the industrial landscape beyond. There's a lovely quality to the image, with the muted tones and the atmospheric weather helping to elevate the whole composition. On several levels it just works well and demonstrates an understanding of how to create a balanced composition.
