New Joiners - Landscapes #584

January 2022

I love views like this, big wide-open vistas that really show off the landscape. It seems reasonably sharp all the way through but you're better off using a narrower aperture for shots like this, maybe f8 or f11. You'd still have gotten 1/400th at f8 or 1/200th at f11 with your ISO at 100. Just a heads up for next time you're out :)

I've been up here a few times while running photography workshops and it's always a hit with people, it's a fantastic view for sure. I like that you've included some foreground foliage, there's a lot of people who ignore it and use a longer lens but I think it looks great wider.

An easy choice for number one, the colours are fantastic and it's got bags of atmosphere. The low mist really helps to create the layers and tie the image together. I love the hill in the far distance poking up above the mist. Lovely job.

I'm not generally a fan of shots like this but I do like this one. I like the separation caused by the wide aperture, the patterns in the rock are interesting too. The little bit of blue sky top left is pretty distracting though, I'd maybe either clone it out or crop it out so it doesn’t draw the eye as much.

Good shout cropping this into a letterbox format, it shows off the landscape really well. I like the contrast between the green foreground and the vivid reds in the rocks. It does look to have a bit of movement blur, try upping your ISO a tad to get a faster shutter speed to avoid this :)

Great call getting low down close to the sand and waves, it's always worth making the effort to get closer as you really get to see the action. I love the reflections in the wet sand too. There's a bit of a halo around the rocks and headland to the right so take care when you're processing as it's easy to overlook this but it can stand out quite a bit. I like that the HDR blend is subtle, it shows it's a good job. You've still retained some shadows and blacks which a lot of HDR images don't have.

I love this, the mist and autumn colours work so well together to create a mega atmospheric image! I like the leading line created by the lines on the road too, they do a good job of leading my eyes through the photo. Great job :)
