New Joiners - Landscapes #603

April 2022

Autumn is just the most wonderful time for landscape photography with such an array of colours. Scotland is a great place to photography autumn with its abundance of lochs of foliage. This image does a grand job of capturing all that beauty in one frame, with the traffic light colours of green, orange and browns permeating through the left of the scene and the low cloud providing a sense of separation from the the far shoreline.

Absolutely love the tones and textures in this image. The monochrome processing gives the scene a timeless feel that I doubt would have been as effective if it was in colour. The sweep of the landscape from the rocky outcrop downwards to the horizon is pleasing to the eye and the sky is provided some texture through the clouds. The use of light and darks speaks to this part of the Peak District and overall this is lovely image.

I like the feeling you convey in this image. The leading lines present naturally in the rock act as a good lead into the image, with the eye landing on the formation at the top. The contrast between the deep blue colour of the sky and the rusted reds and browns of the rock works well. I can almost feel the warmth of that strong directional light.

This is a fascinating image that I keep coming back to again and again. The high key processing works really well, with the textures of the sand leading into the rock formation in the background, with the neutral space created by the bright sky. What really makes this image though is the inclusion of the human element, with the man walking into the scene. This provides a sense of scale, but also makes the image even more intriguing as well as aesthetically pleasing with his white clothing complimenting the colour of the sand. An image with a sense of intrigue and majesty.

This is a beautiful image that makes the most of the conditions and demonstrates an understanding of how to show the landscape off even with the inclusion of manmade elements. I love the subtle pastel tones of the pink sky reflected in the still waters. The flat even tones work well and the processing is effective as I can almost feel the chill of the winter morning. Nicely seen and captured.

This is an elegant and impactful seascape that uses all the elements in the image to great effect. Managing the exposure of that low sun shows an understanding of how to work with a high dynamic range and it adds something a little special to the composition. The light catching on the rock in the foreground is lush, like liquid gold, and complimented by the colours in the sky. Nicely captured and processed.

Drone photography gives us a new perspective on the world and this is a great example of that. The best drone shots that I've seen show off the topography of the landscape defined by the different layers. The greenery of the woodland contrasting with the chalky tones of the shoreline and the turquoise of the clear ocean. The strong sunlight sets off all the different layers and colours and the processing helps lift them further. Lovely work.

This is an effective long exposure that adds a sense of movement and narrative to an otherwise still frame. The clouds moving towards the eye pulls in the viewer to the mountainscape beyond with the light touching the tips, reflecting in the water below. The granite of the mountains below the line of light contrasts with the line of trees, full of autumnal colour. The stick on the shoreline acts as a nice lead into the scene. Well captured and processed, thanks for sharing.

Ah yes, the extremities of the British weather. 15 degrees and bright sunshine one day, a smattering of snow the next. I love those transitional times between seasons when it can be summer in the light and winter in the shade. I really like hint of the heathland creeping through the snow adding some interest to the foreground, with the layers of the landscape visible in the distance. The moody, snow filled sky adds a little something extra.

There's a real sense of storytelling to this image. I'm left wandering about the barn, what's inside and what tales it could tell. The red roof is set off by the warm, pink tones of the sunset sky behind, and is complimented by the corrugated exterior, peppered with sections of rust. I like that you've centred it in the frame and given it prominence. An image with a narrative captured at the right moment.

I've seen this view a couple of times over the months of judging these new joiner contests but this one stood out because of the way you've made all the elements work in your favour. The framing works, with the layers of the mountains stacking backwards, catching the light. The inclusion of the buildings give a sense of scale and meaning to the composition and the texture in the clouds add some drama to the scene.

You've captured some rather gorgeous morning conditions in this image, with the mist in the valley catching the rising sun. I like that you've used the foliage and woodland in the foreground to frame the atmospheric scene beyond. The horizon looks a little off to me and that's detracting from the overall effectiveness of the image. This could be easily sorted in post. Must have been quite a scene to witness.

Nice to see an image of a landmark that I haven't seen before. The architecture is intriguing and the placement in the frame works well, positioned on the left side with the white of the cliffs in the distance. The monochrome processing really works here, bringing out the brickwork of the oratory which compliments the cloud formations in the sky. Nicely done.
