New Joiners - Landscapes #605

April 2022

I rather enjoy what you've done here. Instead of focusing in on the shoreline and the sun beyond, you've made a choice to focus on the beach in the foreground and create a depth of feel that gives the image an almost dreamy feel to it. The light catching the wet sand and the hint of the shoreline beyond works well, and the subtle morning colours add a little something extra.

There's plenty to enjoy about this particular image and it's a great example of how impactful drone photography is when done creatively. I like the mood that you've captured and the overall dark processing, accentuating the wonderful green and yellow tones of the landscape below. Using a portrait orientating works well as it focuses the eye on the that meandering river flowing through the heart of the image. This is enhanced further by the light catching on those natural bends, adding some interest in the midground. Nicely seen, captured and processed.

This is a nice morning scene that highlights the joy that can be found capturing the dawn, with it's promise of quiet and the possibility of atmospheric conditions. I like that you've captured the scene before the sun has come up so it has some of the blue hour feel to it. Although I like the cluster of trees on the right, I can't help wonder how the image would have looked if you'd positioned yourself on the pier, looking out onto that still lake, getting lost in the reflection. Still, there's plenty to like here.

This is an atmospheric image, which is also a possibility when the fog encroaches and covers the landscape like a blanket. The trees you've captured works well, all of them somewhat uniform in size, disappearing into the fog and giving the image a 3D feel. It's a shame that the edge of the most prominent tree in the frame has been cut off the far left. Including the whole tree would have just elevated the composition. That aside, I like the monochrome treatment and eerie feel.

This is a nice, classic waterscape that demonstrates why sunrises can be rather powerful. The start of the day can mean a quiet stillness with the prospect of mist on the water which you've captured rather nicely here. The silhouettes of the trees are a nice touch, sitting on the right hand side of the frame and the pink/purple colours work well to add some pop to the scene.

I like how all the elements work together in the frame. The sky has lots going on in it, with the colour catching the clouds. The positioning of the sun above the intriguing bit of driftwood demonstrates an understanding of composition and adds something to the scene. The light catching on the water also works well, and the shoreline could have been distracting but helps to lead into the driftwood. I'd be inclined to crop the left in a little, but that's just a personal choice.

I absolutely enjoy a good urban landscape and this image fits the bill. I like the decision you've taken to exclude most of the sky as it's overcast/hazy and would not have added much to the overall composition. The tight framing helps to elevate the sense that this is a crowded city space, and this stands in contrast to the boat, which not only adds scale but stands in opposition to the claustrophobic nature of the buildings behind as it steams off into open water. The image has an almost sepia tonality to it which again brings up a well known language of city life (pollution etc.,). Well seen and framed.

I really enjoyed this panoramic scene of the recognisable gardens in Singapore. You've done well to squeeze in as many of the structures as possible without completely crowding the frame. The colours are fresh and vibrant, contrasting with the hint of colour in the clouds and the blue sky above. The people on the walkway add a sense of scale to the scene and provide some human interaction. The only detractor is a bit of another structure sneaking into the bottom left that could be excluded through a crop, but that might reduce the effectiveness of the pano. Nicely captured and processed.

This is a nice rendition of Bamford edge, which is one of my favourite edges, especially in the evening light. I like that you've used the prominent outcrop as a lead in to the image and the edges visible in the distance. The hazy end of the day atmosphere is helping to control that sun and adding some much needed colour. I'd consider cropping the image to exclude some of the sky which hasn't got much going on. A 16:9 crop may well even out the layers of the image. Thanks for sharing!

I always find that when I try and take a picture from an airplane, it never quite works. I either end up with a reflection of the aircraft interior or there's a wing inconveniently in the way. However, you've managed to achieve that here with this lovely shot of Mt Rainer. The layers of blue on white works really well, building up the image till we see the pinnacle of the peak appearing from the cloud. The layers are continued above the peak in a more subtle fashion which adds to the effect. Nicely done!

This is a stunning landscape with impeccable composition that demonstrates an understanding of how to use framing for maximum impact. The long exposure works, especially in the middle of the day as it helps to soften the harsh light, but still allows it to define the trees surrounding the falls and helps to accentuated the blue tones in the water. The curve of the waterfall works to draw the eye as it wanders over the top with the cascade, mirroring the cloud above. Good work.

I've not sure how you've captured this, either from an aircraft or a drone, or perhaps a hillside, but the effect of being so far above the city is powerful. There is a certain romantic feeling to this landscape with the colours of either sunrise or sunset flooding the scene, colour bouncing off the clouds above, an s-curve naturally built into the shoreline, delineating the line between the land and the sea.

This is an image that is all about the layers and how you've used them to build up the composition from bottom to the top. The trees in the foreground had varying shades and quantity of foliage, fresh and vibrant, leading to the greens of the trees beyond and then the darker tones of the rock, contrasting with the hazy blue sky. Everything works really well together, even with the strong directional lighting.
