New Joiners - Landscapes #640

September 2022

Who can resist woodland shrouded in mist and fog? Not me, that's for sure. It has a way of making a normally pedestrian scene full of interest and atmosphere. I like your low angle here, looking up towards the woodland, with a sense of light creeping through the fog. The sepia processing gives the image a timeless feel and it makes me wonder what is beyond the edge of forest. Well captured and processed.

This is a much photographed location in Iceland, and for good reason. There is a drama to it that can sometimes get lost because it's accessible and well documented but that doesn't mean there's no value in it being captured. I'm a firm believer that each image has it's own unique quality and no two images can be identical. It's one of the joys of photography. This is a good example of that as I've never seen an image of Skogafoss with this much snow and ice. I like that you've composed with the ice in the centre of the frame, leading the eye towards the waterfall. The frozen icicles clinging to the cliff face add interest, as do the tiny figures of the people on on the top. Even the shadow of the person in frame acts as a nice leading line. Nicely done.

There is a clarity to the light in this image that really helps to solidify the mood and location of the mountain range. Although the composition isn't perfect (I'd have liked more of the reflection and to have included more of the tree on the left) there is plenty to enjoy, from the quality of that light catching the mountaintops to the contrast of blues/greys with the greens of the trees along the peaks and lower down by the lakeside. The gentle ripples in the water provide some personality and all in all this is a rather lovely scene.

This is an intriguing, top-down drone shot because unless I had read the description I would not have guess it was taken in South Devon. It looks as it is could have been taken in Iceland or somewhere similar. The colour of the water, through design or processing, reminds me of those glacial estuaries, with all the different variations of blue. The image has an abstract feel and it's hard to give names to many of the aspects of the image, apart from the driftwood which gives the scene an anchor as well as a sense of scale. I'd be inclined to crop of the shoreline closest to the bottom of the frame as it's so close that it becomes a distraction from the rest of the image. That being said, there's plenty to enjoy here.

This is one of those places I would absolutely love to visit and images like this really don't quell that desire! The shapes of the mountains reaching up into the low cloud with the rusty reds contrasting with the blacks and greys in the textures of the mountainscape. This is turn contrasts with the gorgeous blues of the lake below. The inclusion of the person standing in the foreground adds some interest and a sense of scale. Dramatic scene, thank you for sharing.

This is a simple image that uses all the elements in the frame to good effect. Using the rule of thirds, the positioning of the boat works well, as it's where the eye ends up, no matter where it starts. The time of day that you've decided to capture the scene really helps to elevate it, with warm glow of the low sun bouncing on the clouds above. You've given lots of space to the sky which is punctuated by the mountains in the distance and some dark, low cloud. Nicely captured and processed.

I really enjoyed the premise of this image, with the field of sunflowers stretching out as far as the eye can see, with the heads of the flowers turned towards the sun as it dips below the horizon. The textures and colours in the sky compliments the yellows of the sunflowers and the composition works well. Unfortunately the image itself is at a really low resolution so some of the impact is lost.

This is a top-down drone shot that is all about the layers that it reveals in the landscape. The dark blues of the deeper ocean contrasts with the turquoise of the shallows and the blue of the boats. The white tops of the boats work well with the strip of sand, and the inclusion of some of the resort in the bottom right helps to frame the whole scene. I'd consider cropping out some of the left hand side of the frame because it's wasted space and a crop would make the composition tighter.

This is an image that thrives on the many layers concealed in the the frame. The colour of the sea and the colour of the sky compliment each other, with the darker turquoise blues helping to elevate the pastel pinks and lighter blues above. The outline of the pier and the funfair at the end of it help to give the image some interest and a sense of nostalgia. Nicely seen and captured.

I like the notion of using a gate to invite the viewer into the heart of the composition. It offers rewards if you look beyond the wall and gate to the beach and sea beyond. Although the light is harsh, the high cloud creates some really lovely shapes in the blue sky. A creative approach that works well.

Although it is really one of the most popular locations for any landscape photographer who ends up in Iceland, it is so for very good reason. Your image is evidence of the pull that brings people to Jökulsárlón. The blues of the icebergs settled on the still waters of the lake contrast with the warm colours in the sky, reflecting into the water. Those icebergs are full of texture and patterns, as is the sky, and overall this is a pleasing example of a fascinating place.

The Giants Causeway is just a unique and special place, and I feel like your image does justice to that. The choice of wide-angle means you're able to fit in the curve of the shoreline and show off the interesting geological shapes of the basalt stones. The long exposure helps to elevate the grey sky and add a sense of movement to the image, creating a narrative. The differentiation between the darker stones and the lighter ones makes it seem like the top is bathed in light. Overall a really pleasing image of a remarkable location.

This is a dramatic scene that has lots of elements working together. It's a shame that you have failed to give any details regarding the image because I would have loved to have considered some of the background info and your thought process. The long exposure of the fog creates a divide down the scene, and elevates the composition. The light catching on the top of the mountain/volcano is rather lovely, and the 1:1 ratio works well.

This is definitely my kind of morning. It's rather nice to see that wherever misty mornings occur in the world, from the Derbyshire dales to Sri Lanka, they produce similar effects and atmosphere to an image in a unique way. I like your framing so our attention focuses in on the trees in the foreground, the sun and light breaking through the mist to create such an atmospheric scene. The light catching on the trees is appealing and the exclusion of the sky helps to avoid any distractions. I would say that the highlights above the tree line are a little blown which is always a potential outcome from shooting into the sun when you've got lots of light filtering in. Still, this image has bags of personality.
