New Joiners - Landscapes #662

January 2023

It's a shame that you haven't included a description or any info with this image, as I'd love to know why you took this particular shot. I love the sweep of the landscape from left to right, culminating in the distant apex rising up to meet the pink evening clouds. Nicely seen and processed.

An image that is all about scale and the push/pull of nature vs human interference. This is demonstrated by the manmade staircase leading up to your vantage point which then provides you with a view of vastness, mountains marching off into the distance, light flooding the scene. I like the portrait orientation of the image which breaks the scene in to different layers, but it's a shame that the highlights at the top have been blown out with a loss of detail. That aside, you really get a feel for the grandeur of the region through your image.

It's always nice to see someone trying something new and experimenting with the landscape. I like your low perspective here, capturing the red rocks in the foreground and the hazy blue far shoreline. However, the star of the image is that big splash arching into the air, droplets scattering and creating bokeh. Your fast shutter speed means all that energy has been capturing in one burst which adds dynamism to the image.

An intriguing landscape that is all the better for that low light that is catching the rock face and the foliage in the foreground. I can imagine that those rock formation are indeed great for climbing as they reach out of the existing landscape, like turrets of castles. The framing of the middle formation between the two at either side works well, although I wish you'd given a little bit more room to that tree in the top right as it's rather the star of the show. That aside, this is a fascinating and powerful image, thanks for sharing.

I rather like this seascape. It's full of mood and apprehension. The gathering clouds on the horizon threatening bad weather, the deep blues and greys complimenting similar colours in the water, and the crashing wave caught in mid-flow, white froth escaping from the edges. The framing works well enclosing the eye into this space with no where to escape. The only issue really is the noise and grain evident. this could be improved in post, but perhaps grainy is the mood you were hoping to evoke.

There are several things about this image that could be easily done to improve the overall effectiveness, namely straightening of the horizon and the cloning out of the dust spots in the top left. Often these would be enough to keep an image out of the top ten, but there's something about this scene that transcends the obvious issues. It has an almost graphical feel to it, with the dark tones of the mountain cutting through the snow. The way the snow has crept onto some of the shoreline and gives way to a silvery reflection of the grey clouds above. It has a romanticism to it, and puts me in mind of why my heart always pulls to the north, especially in winter. I can imagine it was an amazing sight to beyond, so thank you for sharing.

This is a competent long exposure that makes the most of the elements in the frame and the available light. Your framing works well, with the water moving through the heart of the image. It's a shame the light isn't fully on the water in the foreground as it gets a little lost against the greys and browns of the surrounding rock. The light on the trees above is rather delightful through, capturing the colours of the foliage, complimenting the colours in the rocks.

A good example of drone photography that doesn't go for the more obvious 'top down' composition and instead chooses to show the morning fog in a more traditional landscape aspect ratio, just from an elevated vantage point. The blue hour is evident and the scene is full of atmosphere with the mist and fog drifting across the wetlands. The blues of the morning compliment the greens of the woodlands and there is just a hint of the coming dawn on the horizon. Nicely seen and processed.

Not entirely sure I've ever included an image taken at Disney in a the top 10 of a landscape photography competition before, but that's just testament to how you've taken something manmade and photographed it in a such a way as it certainly fits the theme. Your choice to crop in closely and avoid any obvious signs of it being manmade certainly helps to sell the scene. The long exposure works well here, adding narrative and interest to the water. All I can say is that if you told me this was in the Pacific North West rather than Disney, I would believe you. Nice work.

I rather enjoyed the autumnal feel of this scene, with those splashes of red creeping through the greenery. The marshland in the foreground works well, and there is a hint of a reflection in the water. The framing is a little off, as my eye is distracted by the tree sticking up in the bottom left. I'd be inclined to crop that out for a more pleasing and effective composition.

This is a traditional landscape that just demonstrates how wonderful it can be to get outdoors and just enjoy the countryside. I like your framing, with the rocks in the foreground leading to the still lake beyond, pine trees thriving on the shoreline. Beyond there are more mountains, crisscrossing into the distance, and the low cloud hangs from their summits, only briefly betraying the blue sky above. Your image gives a sense of the place and also your excitement at camping there. Thanks for sharing.

There's so much going on here that one look alone doesn't do the image justice. It's a fierce, wintery scene that demonstrates the harshness of the season, with the snow permeating through the top of the frame, adding narrative and motion, leading the eye into the spectral mountains in the distance. The foreground is also full of wonder, with frozen ground smattered with snow, creating intriguing and beguiling shapes. Although in colour, the image has a monochrome feel, with blue the predominant tone. A majestic insight into this magical part of the world. Well seen, composed and processed.

This is an image of different layers, all of them combining to create a rather delightful mountainous scene. The shrubbery in the foreground is full of yellows and oranges with a hint of fuchsia thrown in, contrasting with the darker greens of the pines rising up out of the mountainside. These bolder colours give way to the more ethereal blues in the hazy distance. I like the framing of the lake below and the fact you've kept the tops of the pines from clipping above the tops of the mountains. There's a lot of sky in the image but it has cloud in it that adds texture and gives context to the scale of the scene.

There's something about the uniformity of the trees in this image that's both interesting and a little unsettling. It's certainly a manmade plantation as nothing in nature is quite so neat, and this makes for a satisfying composition with the trees marching into the mist. The unsettling feeling comes from watching one too many horror films as I wonder what might exist beyond the horizon in the foggy distance. The colours of the autumnal trees is rather lovely, yellows and greens co-existing in the transitional space between seasons. Your framing works well, and the processing is complimentary.

I like to think of long exposures as two separate types of creative image. One is your traditional long exposure that smooths out any water, adding an ethereal feeling to a scene. The other is still a long exposure, but it leans to the much shorter end of the shutter speed, thus capturing movement in an altogether different way. Yours falls into the latter of these description and I think it's all the better for it. As the water receding and the tide turns, you've captured the energy of the water being dragged back out to the ocean. There is enough smoothness for the hint of a reflection but enough motion to show what's happening. The colours are cool and muted, apart from that one illuminated cloud in the sky. The ratio of sky to sea works well and all in this is a satisfying seascape.
