New Joiners - Landscapes #666

January 2023

I like that way you've composed this image, with the tight framing that ensures that all the elements in the frame play a part. It looks to be an overcast day so it was a wise decision to exclude the sky which would have potentially distracted in it's uniformity. The waterfall suffers from a few blown highlights but I rather like the hi-key processing that you've used. Thanks for sharing.

This is a quintessential wintery image that evokes how lovely those mornings are after snowfall when the whole world feels fresh and still. That feeling is elevated further by the gorgeous pinks of the sunrise (I'm presuming here, it could be sunset) catching off the clouds. Some images are all about how they make you feel and this is definitely one of those. Thanks for sharing.

A well composed image that does well with all the elements available in the frame. The natural archway is the main component of the scene, taking up much of the image. The colours of the rock, red and brown, contrast with the clear blue skies beyond. You've done well to control the sun that is peeking out from behind the archway, even more so because you're capturing this image on an iPhone, and this just adds a little touch of magic.

One of the really powerful uses of drones is to shoot these lovely abstract images that would be virtually impossible otherwise. This is one of those images that could be a tiny piece of the shoreline or a vast expanse. It makes me want to look closer and take in all the detail, trying to find something that would give a sense of scale. Fascinating image, thanks for sharing.

This is a simple image that is made more effective by your choices of composition and processing. The conditions in which you took the image also help to elevate it. I like the tight crop so we're focused on the snowy tree with only a hint of what is occurring in the distance. This, combined with the processing which darkens down many of the elements gives the scene a spooky feel.

I really like this image, even through it's not a traditional landscape, it has an urban feel and uses many of the tropes of landscape photography to make the scene pop. The big draw for me is the contrast in colours between the blue, illuminated swimming pool and the rather intense sunset happening in the sky, full of pinks, purples and oranges. The fact that it was taken on an iPhone 8 makes it all the more impressive as the exposure is perfectly balanced and each element in the frame compliments each other. Thank you for sharing!

This is an image all about the layers in the landscape. Poppies are very much the colour of summer, specially when they mingle with the vibrant greens and yellows of the grassland in which they reside. These fresh colours contrast with the blue sky full of fluffy clouds adding texture and interest. The grey mountains are a great buffer between the two parts of the image. The low angle you use ensures that the poppies are the main event of the composition and overall this is a pleasing image that shows off the best that summer has to offer to landscape photographers.

I don't think I've ever chosen a drone image as a winning landscape in the New Joiners contest but there is something about this particular scene that elevates it from simple topdown drone image to something more profound. The subject matter helps, with the remnants from World War II visible, from the platforms that are still intact to the ones showing decay. It's a moment in history, and you make sure the composition ensures maximum effect. It's an image that makes me want to look closer and appreciate the sheer scale of it all. Nicely seen, composed and processed.

A simple, yet effective image that uses the available reflection to enhance the scene. The silhouettes of the trees on the river bank stand out against the colourful sunrise occurring in the distance and filling the clouds with warm tones. Nicely seen and processed.

Although this is an image that is ostensibly about the surfers, it's really an image about their relationship with the sea. In a way, this image is a powerful rendition of how small we are against the tumoltuous waters with which we share our planet. There is a feeling of trepidation, or possibly excitement emanating from the three surfers as the watch the powerful wave descend upon them. A really nice example of how people in an image can add impact.

I love the atmosphere that you've created with this image. The title you've given the photo is 'Whiteout' and that sentiment is certainly evident in the conditions you have captured. Still, the trees are visible on the far shoreline and reflecting in the water. I would say the composition is a little off, as there is a lot of empty, negative space towards the top of the image and we lose a lot of the reflection. I'd be inclined to try a 1:1 crop to see if that might work better. Still, an image full of atmosphere, thanks for sharing.

This is an image that is all about layers. in the foreground we have the plains full of browns and a smattering of snow, leading to the slopes of the mountains in the distance. Here we find darker blues intersecting with more snow, capped off by an overcast sky. It all works well together, especially with the light catching on the mountainside. A nice slice of the Montana landscape.

This scene alone is something to behold (although not sure how many are left of the original 12 seastacks) so your presentation of it at sunset really shows it in the best kind of light. You've done well to control the light as it's always difficult to shoot directly into the sun but here the bold choice enhances the image. Although the colours are bright and bold, they're not completely overwhelming, including the colour catching the cloud above. A lovely rendition of a special location.

Sometimes, when manmade elements enter into an image, they take over the scene and detract from the landscape. Here, the farmer, and the vehicle very much add to the landscape and give it context. Even the bird hiding in the grass adds to the image. It's evident from the light that the sky has been replaced and although this may add some drama to the scene, it looks out of place and isn't blended particularly well. I'm all for experimentation in photography, but sometimes it'd hard to walk the line between photography and digital art.
