New Joiners - Landscapes #684

March 2023

Some images are less about impressive vistas and much more about the mood they convey and this image finds itself in the latter category. There is something about this image that just evokes the notion of warm, hazy summer days. This is enhanced by the colours in the sky and light catching on the grasses in the foreground. I like the use of the large tree on the right as a way to lead into the frame and point to the mountains in the distance.

There is plenty going on in this frame and I like how you've composed the image with the flowers in the foreground, vibrant red, leading to the bright greens and yellows of the rice terrance. The background is also dramatic with that mountain peak shrouded with a scarf of cloud. Some of the highlights are blown out but this doesn't detract too much from the effectiveness of the image.

One of my favourite places on the whole of this wonderful planet. The tide must have been at it's lowest for you to have got this angle of the Harris hills in all their glory. I like that you've got a little bit of the dunes on the right and Taransay on the left. The people enjoying a walk on the beach add some scale. I would consider a tighter crop, possibly a panoramic 16:9 as including so much sky means we lose the some of the impact of those hills.

I included this image in my top ten selection because I liked the creativity shown. You could have just taken a photo of the rock itself, but instead you've opted to ensure the image is more interesting by finding a pool/puddle to capture the reflection of the rock in the still waters. This immediately makes the image stand out. The bold colours also help, as does the light catching off the rock. Nicely done.

Sometimes the simplest of images can be the most effective and this photo is a lovely example of this. Ostensibly it's just a photo of some grasses at sunset, but it's so much more than just the sum of it's parts. The shallow depth of field gives the image a dreamy feel, and that is enhanced further by the gorgeous colours created by the sunset in the distance. It's an image that's much more about mood than substance and all the better for it.

This is an ethereal image that has more than a touch of magic. The composition works well, with the hills on the right balancing the hills on the left. The island in the middle stands out against the misty backdrop, and is balanced by the structure on the right. However, the star of the show is the atmosphere you've conveyed through the conditions and processing. Those glorious dawn blues permeating through the frame, tempered by the vibrant pinks and pastel tones in some of the clouds. Wish you'd provided a little more information for context, but either way this is an absolutely marvellous image.

I have to say, this image made me stop in my tracks and really take in the scene. I absolutely love the mood you've conveyed with the long exposure and fine art processing. The monochrome conversion ensures that there are no colourful distractions so the eye fully concentrates on the highlights and shadows evident in the frame. Your composition works really well, centring that lone tree, framed by the clouds above and the water below. Creative and inspirational, thank you for sharing!

The light you've captured in this image is rather impressive. These are absolutely my favourite kind of conditions, with the sun breaking through the early morning atmosphere and creating shafts of light through the trees. To make the image even more effective I would recommend cropping out the bright light at the top of the frame as it pulls the eye out of the image and distracts. That aside, I imagine this was a wonderful sight to behold.

A simple, yet effect rendition of these rocks. I like that you've focused much of the frame on the jagged outcrop so we are able to really enjoy how the light is playing with the colours and enhancing the textures. The image has a warm colour cast which may well be intentional and this gives the image an aged appearance, as if I was looking at the photo taken in the 1970s.

This image works well. I like your compositional choices with the sweeping shoreline made up of broken shards of rock, slate and granite leading the eye into the heart of the scene. The still water helps with creating a rather delicious reflection and the clouds add some texture to both the sky and the reflection. Nicely seen and captured.

A colourful, classic landscape image of an iconic location. I like the way you've used the rocks on the left side to lead the eye into the main structure of bowfiddle, arching out into the water. Those sunrise colours really elevate the scene, with the bright oranges, pastel pinks and hint of blue working together to create some drama and interest in the sky. The hint of side light catching on the rocks is a nice touch. Nicely seen, captured and processed.

An intriguing image that marries up parts of the natural world with more manmade structures demonstrated by the inclusion of the temple. The island with the two trees on the left balance out the temple on the right. The composition works well, giving space to the elements in the frame, including room for that rather dramatic sky full of interesting cloudscapes. The blues of the sky compliment the greens and yellows below. Nicely seen, captured and processed.

Rarely can photographers, especially those who specialise in landscapes, resist the lure of a lone tree. There is something romantic about the solitary, stalwart nature of such a sight, especially when it's set against a dramatic backdrop as is the case with this image. It evokes the spirit of the savannah, with a sky full of warmth even as the sun is setting. I like how you've placed the tree and the setting sun in relationship with each other. The silhouette of the tree framed by the lush oranges in the sky. A vivid scene full of mood.

This is a powerful rendition of one of Iceland's most recognisable landscapes. The classic composition works well here, with the waterfall on the left and the distinctive shape of the mountain on the right. The inclusion of some of the people helps to add a little bit of context and scale and that grey sky above helps to bring out the lush greens and yellows of the foliage. The long exposure of the waterfall creates a sense of narrative and all in, this image works well.
