New Joiners - Landscapes #688

April 2023

This image is all about the contrast in colour between the water, the rocks and the sky. From the cool blue of the sky to the turquoise of the water, the composition is punctuated by the red and browns of the rock formations on the shoreline, catching on the low light. There is a lot of negative space both above and below the horizon that doesn't add much to the scene, so I'd consider a crop to help focus our attention on the rocks.

There's lots going on in this image, from the two beacons with their contrasting lights, one green and one red, to the mountains beyond and the wispy colours of dusk (or dawn) in the sky. I like the way the beacons stand in opposition to each other, and how their colours are reflected in the water below, but also mirrored in some of the clouds above. They act as a gateway, beckoning the eye to the scenery in the distance.

This is not the classic 'landscape' image I usually find in these competitions, and it's rather nice to see someone thinking outside of the traditional, often illustrative, box. Despite being a composite of many different elements, they join together to create a collage, and this is unmistakably a landscape of sorts. I enjoyed your explanation too, and feel this image demonstrates real imagination and talent. One of those scenes that asks you to look a little closer and contemplate a little harder. Thanks for sharing, both the words and the image.

This is a great example of how to do the classic waterfall shot well, especially in autumn. Looking at the image it must be early autumn as the leaves have yet to fully fall from the trees, but there are enough of them to add interest to the foreground. I like your decision not to include the sky in the composition so we focus our attention on the main compositional element, the waterfall itself. The long exposure is just long enough to give some narrative to the water, but not to completely remove any texture and the overcast conditions ensure that the tones are even throughout. Nicely seen and captured.

I like the mood in this image, and the elements in the frame combine to create a narrative. The line of what I assume are your own footsteps through the snow, lead the eye into the thicket of trees beyond. Although it is a colour photo it has a cold, grey monochrome feel, with the white of the snow contrasting with the dark branches of the pines. There is a hint of the landscape beyond but a foreboding feeling of having to make it through the trees to find it.

The rather dramatic landscape of Snowdonia, as seen from part way up it's most well known mountain, Snowdon. I like that you've captured the weather as it's moving through, rain breaking through through the cloud and drenching a distant part of the landscape. This is a good demonstration of it's so much fun to hike with a camera phone as you always have the ability to capture these fleeting moments without having to lug huge amounts of kit up a mountain.

A classic, colourful sunset which makes the most of the elements in the frame. The light and colour catching on that cloud base are thoroughly dramatic, set against the silhouette if the yonder landscape. The reflection of the colour in the water elevates the drama further, as does the hint of the setting sun behind the far hill. Does what it says on the tin, but does it well. Thanks for sharing.

An intriguing drone image that shows the different colours and textures that can be found in the landscape when we look at it top down from above. The colour of the water is interesting and has a relationship with the colours of the surrounding woodland. I like that you've included the waterfall at the top of the image although it is a shame that the highlight are blown so we lose much of the detail.

This is image is all about scale. There is a relationship between the water and the sky as well as the person standing on the pier. The colours of sunset are running through the different cloud bases, giving the feel of a wide open space above the tumultuous waters below. The human on the left provides scale to the size of the low cumulous clouds gathering on the horizon. The processing is complimentary and really helps to elevate the mood of the image.

When I first saw this image, I knew it was Mam Tor but I was confused as it is usually photographed from the other side, so it's nice to see a slight variation on the classic composition. The conditions you've found yourself capturing are that of a classic Peaks inversion, aided by the cold, frosty ground and frozen landscape. The pink in the sky is mirrored in early morning light casting on the copse of trees below and the stairs lead the eye into the heart of the scene. Nice to see a different take and I can really feel the bite of cold in the air just by looking at the image.

There is so much colour and texture in this scene. There is the green of the mountain contrasting with the blue of the sky, and the textures of each also elevate the scene. The mountain peak seems to be surrounded by cloud above and below. It takes a little while to notice, but the little building that seems to be precariously on the edge of one of the ridges is rather fascinating. Love the colours and the textures, thanks for sharing.

As hotel views go, this one probably takes some beating. From the pastures in the foreground to the woodland beyond and the distant snow-capped mountains. I can only imagine how delightful it was to wake up and take it all in. The richness of the colours certainly shine through, although there are pitfalls when it comes to capturing images through windows which include unwanted reflections of artificial lights and other elements. I recommend making the room as dark as possible and getting the lens right against the window to minimise the interference.

I love this building. It is as imposing as it is interesting architecturally and a photographers dream with all those curves balanced out by sharp edges. Capturing it during nighttime gives the view a different view with less distractions visible in the background. I like the processing you've gone with in regard to the building, keeping the colours quite neutral. The rather vibrant yellow lights on the left side are a little distracting and pull my eye out of the frame and I'd consider cropping in a little tighter to focus all attention on the museum. A nice rendition of a fabulous building.

This seems to be the week for cityscape entries and this is my pick of the lot. I like your choice of content in the frame, from the the bridge to the boats and the modern offices on the right side. This is complimented by the clear cold winter sky behind, dark enough for the all the lights to be on, but harbouring none of the yellow glow that can occur when shooting late into the night. This is down to the processing choices you've made, concentrating on the blues and keeping the warmer tones in check. Although my instinct would be to have less negative space above the elements in the frame and a little more below, I actually rather like that compositional choice in this image. Nicely seen, captured and processed.

Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Animals’.

What I like about this image is that you tell the whole journey of the crop. We have the raw crop, the ear of corn/wheat/hay sticking up in the foreground which then leads the eye to the hay bale behind which is where most of the field has ended up after the crop has been harvested. The uniform colour of the field is elevated by the blue sky above. A rather enjoyable summer scene.
