New Joiners - Landscapes #693

April 2023

I really like this, I don't actually think I've seen a photo of the Hollywood hills like this, maybe I've just not been looking but when I saw the preview of this I thought it was the Dolomites or Slovenia. I'd maybe crop a little off the bottom and top to make it either a 16:9 or similar aspect. I think it'd work better without the buildings in the very bottom as the Hollywood sign will be isolated.

A nice enough shot, I think it could be improved with a crop though. My advice would be crop this 3:4 and centralise the walkway. It works a lot better as a portrait in my opinion. It's a pleasant enough shot but in landscape the edges of the frame don't really add anything whereas I think if you concentrate more on the walkway the image has more impact overall.

I really like the way this is put together, it's got a pleasing foreground that is well balanced. I like the slow-ish shutter speed too, giving the water a bit of life and that sky looks incredible. The colours are beautiful and it's got loads of drama. Lovely shot!

I agree with you the reflection here is awesome, if I was to be picky I'd maybe have liked to see a wider shot to include the full reflection of the trees but I understand it might not have been possible!

This composition is great, I really like the way the line work throughout the whole image. It's got nice subtle colours and it's well thought out. I think had this been a 16:9 crop losing some off the bottom I'd have chose it as the winner!

Cityscapes don't usually feature in my top 10s, however this one is really nice. I like the almost abstract symmetry of it with the way it's framed. The sky looks fantastic too, that colour in the clouds really works well! I'd maybe either lighten the top of the sky a tad or crop it out as the dark bits catch the eye quite a bit.

I really like this, it's simple but really works. The lead in from the bottom right guides you through the image and the horizon shape compliments the angles. I love the mist on the water too. The light on the trees is great too. Well done!

This is a lovely simple composition, I like that you've opted for a letterbox crop too, it works really well. I'd look to clone out the posts bottom left or even crop it in a little from that corner to remove them as they catch the eye a bit!

I really like this, you've done a great job with the central composition. It all feels put together very well, and that sky looks mega. It's a slight shame that there's no boats on the far left hand side to balance the right out a tad but there's not really much you can do about that! Nice shot :)

2 cityscape images in the top 10? Well, why not when they are good like this! I like the light trails, it adds another dimension to what could potentially be a bland image otherwise. I like the striking colours too.

This black and white conversion has bags of drama, it's nice and contrasty and definitely packs a punch. It's a bit of an odd choice of aperture, you've shot this at f2.8 which has left the depth of field very shallow, you could have shot this at f8 and still managed 1/100th of a second which is plenty sharp enough at 51mm. Maybe something to consider for next time :)

I quite like this as a concept, it's kinda like an abstract. Regarding the composition, I'd probably crop this in tighter to remove the distractions around the edge like the blue chair to the right etc and some of the sky.

It's lovely to see a new take on such a popular spot, we are used to seeing this from the front head on so it's a refreshing change. It's composed nicely, well exposed and I like the inclusion of the flowers in the foreground. Nice shot :)

There's some great leading lines here that all converge to make a very pleasing image. I love the textures in the wood and the moody atmosphere is great. The sky has some lovely colour in it and again suits the moody processing and dark look. Nicely done.

This looks like such a beautiful place to photograph! I like the composition overall here, but I'd have liked to see it without the branches coming in from the right, they're a bit distracting. The lay of the land here would lend itself to a 16:9 crop as well :)
