New Joiners - Landscapes #729

September 2023

This shot has such a lovely summery feel to it with the setting sun and golden crops. I like the low shooting angle and shallow depth of field - which helps focus the viewer's attention on the barley. I think centralising the horizon works quite well on this occasion.

Another photo with lovely atmosphere. The low-lying mist really highlights the shape and shadows of the stag, trees, fence, and cyclist. It almost appears to be two or three different shots in one frame, but it works somehow. This photo really does capture park-life wonderfully well.

Sometimes less is more. This is a very simple composition with no foreground interest or key focal point, but the shot works nonetheless. The cool tones, reflections, moody sky and slither of light above the hills - also reflected in the water below - produces a very pleasing and moody landscape.

What a beautiful vista. The low light is gorgeous, and the composition well-balanced. I love the hazy mountain peaks receding into the distance on the right of the frame. Shots like this - taken on a modest iPhone - go to show you don't need a fancy camera to take great shots. All you need is a good, creative eye and opportunity.

What a well-timed shot and a great rural view. The sheep, piling through the gateway, add lots of energy and interest to the foreground, while the tor in the distance provides an anchor for the composition. The gate itself acts as an effective lead-in line. A well composed shot. It is just a shame the light is a little dull and flat - something obviously out off the photographer's control.

The autumnal colours are beautiful in this photograph. The mirror-like reflection adds a sense of tranquility to the shot, and the combination of natural and manmade elements work well. The soft sunlight is a key ingredient - adding warmth and contrast to the composition.

It is no surprise that Skogafoss is a popular spot among astro photographers. It is an extraordinarily beautiful waterfall, and having the aurora dancing above it is the icing on the cake. The photographer has blended exposures to ensure the Northern Lights are recorded accurately, while also capturing sufficient depth of field to record the icy foreground sharply. A really lovely photo - worth the sleepless night and cold fingers!

Not everyone finds it easy to capture a straight horizon. Some camera's now have in-built levelling aids, like virtual horizon - effectively a digital spirit level. However, even if your horizons are wonky (as it is in this instance), it is easy enough to correct at the editing stage - so always remember to check.

This is a very tranquil scene with mirror-like reflections and cool, blue hues. The posts and causeway provide an effective lead-in line to the buildings. I would be tempted to crop this into a panoramic format, and eliminate a chuck of sky and most of the dark, concrete foreground. A tighter composition would create a more concise, impactful result in my opinion.

I really like this composition. The hand rails provide a neat lead-in line - and the photographer has placed themselves centrally to create symmetry. While the composition is good, I wonder if a slightly more creative exposure might have produced a stronger result. Next time, try attaching an ND filter and using an exposure of a one second or longer to generate interesting water motion and texture.

This isn't one of those shots that jumps out at you at first glance, but the longer you look at the image, the more you enjoy it. It is a huge vista, almost monochromatic in appearance. I like the light-play across the mountains, which add depth and definition.

What a stunning rainbow - well worth stopping for to take a photo. However, the foreground barrier and road are quite ugly. I think the photographer would have been better off taking another step forward in order to eliminate them from frame.

A really well seen and composed shot. I love the zig-zag affect created by the trees and emphasised by the mist. The interaction between light and shade creates depth and the photo has lovely atmosphere. The file looks a like noisy - noise reduction software would correct this.

I've photographed this conifer at Kelly Hall Tarn myself, but never at nighttime. It is a great location and the photographer has done well to plan and time their shot for when the Milky Way would be in such a good position. For a first ever Milky Way shot, this looks like a darn good effect - well done.

This is a fabulous viewpoint and a well constructed shot. The craggy foreground rocks help 'point' the viewer's eye toward the distant view and the square crop suits the vista. However, while I like the composition, the colours feel a little oversaturated, and the file looks quite contrasty and over-sharpened. The sky in particular looks almost painterly in appearance. Subtler processing would benefit this file.
