New Joiners - Landscapes #742

October 2023

I see a lot of images of this part of the US but they rarely have the kind of light visible in this shot. The different hues in the image move from yellow to orange and then pink, giving the image an almost unreal and ethereal feel, cinematic in nature. It must have been quite a delight to witness. Your composition aids the image, with the panoramic crop giving room for the sky to breathe and also space for the formations to stand out, catching that glorious side light. Nicely seen and processed.

I absolutely love the mood you've captured and created within this image. There is a quiet nostalgia to it, as if the summer is close to ending. I'm unsure of whether this was shot at sunset or sunrise, but judging by the mist I'm guessing it's the morning. The composition works well, hiding the strong sun behind the tree on left complimented by the two perfectly positioned hay bales towards the bottom of the frame. However, the element that really makes the image sing is the flock of birds flying over just at the right time. Your processing enhances the mood and feel of the image and overall this works great!

What I like about this image is that you've not done what one might expect with a composition such as this. The conditions are clearly favourable and many photographers would see this scene and immediately want to just focus on those two trees. Of course, you also focus on those two, delightfully autumnal trees, but you do it in a really unusual and creative manner. Using the foliage that is closer to the lens on the left creates some nice bokeh and points us towards the trees and the foliage on the right helps to frame the whole scene. The gorgeous side and backlighting also help, as does the hazy mist creating some separation from the background. Lovely work.

As landscape photography goes, this image has a little bit of magic. I've seen this little Scottish vignette captured and presented dozens of times but never quite in these conditions, which are spectacular. There is no light as such, but the absence of light creates an atmosphere of its own, with those grey stormy skies framing the snow-capped mountain in the distance and the distinct tree on the left. What really makes this image for me is the composition. Including that curve of melted snow in the foreground and the long exposure of the waterfall adding some narrative to an otherwise static scene. Honestly, there's so much to love here that this is a deserved winner.

The joy of drone photography is being able to get really unique and different compositions. This is a wonderful example of that. Not only do we get to see the church in all it's glory, we also get to experience it in the context of the rest of the valley below and the mountains in the distance. The light you've captured is rather lovely, with shafts of it highlighting different bits of the composition. As is always a risk shooting into the sun, there are some blown highlights but nothing that distracts too much. Thanks for sharing.

I always think that composing in a 1:1 ratio is a really tough thing to do. You have to think about the flow of the frame in different directions. However, I think you've done a sterling job of composition here, aided by the textured cloud in the sky that keeps the top of the frame interesting and helps to balance out the bottom half. The diagonal created by the shoreline with the rocky outcrops leads the eye from up to the distant lighthouse, which despite it's size in the frame, becomes the natural focal point. The warm tones in the sky compliment the colour of the grass in on the headland and there is a hint of the day ending evident in the pastel tones showing above the horizon. Nicely see, captured and processed.

This image is all about that bombastic and delightful sunstar. I always admire photographers who have the get up and go to be at a location prior to sunrise, ensuring that they've got their composition sorted and are ready for the sun to just peek above the horizon. This is a lovely example of this. Without that sunstar, the image would still have plenty to enjoy, but it just adds a little bit of extra magic. This is elevated further by some of that low light catching on the foliage in the bottom right of the frame. The build up of cloud in the sky adds some texture and overall this is a photo of which you can feel proud.

This is a fabulous scene that has a little bit of everything. There is the fiery sky that is dancing with colour and cloud. This gives way to the hillside dappled in some of that early morning light. Below, on the water, the mist is visible, allowing for some separation from the trees in the foreground and the trees behind. The part that works best for me is that one tree on the shoreline in full autumnal colour, catching the light. It's beautiful and makes the whole image. Unfortunately I find myself distracted by the reeds that are creeping into the bottom of the frame. They don't add anything and pull the eye away from the beautiful scene above. If possible, I recommend cropping them out. That aside, a gorgeous autumnal scene.

I love mornings like this at Rydal, when the autumn colour is just about hanging on, but winter is just around the corner. The stillness of the water helps, reflecting back the scene above, and the light catching on the tops of the distant fells is lovely, bringing out those warm tones in the landscape. This contrasts with the cooler tones of the landscape that is still in shadow, including the island of pines prominent on the shoreline. There are a couple of dust spots that have snuck through your edit process and removing them in the post will ensure there are no distractions. Lovely image and thank you for being thorough with the details provided, it's always good to read the story behind an image.

I like this image because it's an unusual perspective on Uluru. Often we see images that try to take in the whole rock and it can feel a little lost in the wider landscape, but you've opted for a more detailed shot here and I think it works well. The light helps, picking out different parts of the rock to illuminate. I like the tree that's providing a little bit of scale at the bottom of the frame and the contrast between the vibrant reds and oranges with the blue of the sky above. An intriguing shot, thank you for sharing.

Vestrahorn is one of those 'must visit' Icelandic locations (last time I was there they were filming a Bollywood music video). Iconic locations are iconic for a reason, and your image is a good depiction of why photographers are drawn to this part of the world. The black sands with the oranges grasses make for a great foreground, leading the eye to the impressive mountain in the distance, standing along against the dramatic sky. Your framing works great and this is an image of which you can feel proud.

I love the feel and mood you've created with this image, it's got a dream-like quality that draws in the viewers attention. I love the layers that the mountains and conditions have created in the frame, with the tonality moving from the darker blue in the bottom left to the pale blue of the sky. Your composition works well, with the panoramic ratio keeping our attention on the various shades in the mountains. Your processing is subtle but the cooling down of the image works well. Really nicely seen, captured and edited.

I really love this autumnal frame. It's got lots of personality and the colours are wonderfully vibrant. You've done a brilliant job of balancing out the trees on the right of the frame with the trees on the left, all of which are dancing in their optimum autumnal colour. The flash of green from the smaller bush at the bottom of the frame works well, as does the pathway that leads us through the image and ties together both sides of the frame. I like that you've excluded the sky altogether so we are not distracted by any large chunks of featureless highlights. Just a delightful scene, thank you for sharing.

A classic autumnal scene in the UK and is often photographed and for good reason. The foliage at Stourhead shows the best of our wonderful trees as the colours turn. Even though the sky is a little overcast, you've still managed to catch some of the side light, illuminating the woodland as well as the ornamental bridge, bringing out all the variation in colour. The still waters of the lake add an interesting and pleasing visual reflection to the proceedings all in all this is a lovely depiction of autumn in all it's glory.
