New Joiners - Landscapes #744

October 2023

Some photos are all about composition and some are about the conditions that appear in front of your camera lens and you have the privilege of capturing them and fixing them forever in time. This is one of those occasions, and you were in the perfect position to capture the wonderful arch of that rainbow hitting the rain cloud above. The undulation of the landscape helps, as does that strong lighting on the well positioned copse of trees. Nicely seen and captured.

A powerful composition that shows off the grandeur and scale of Milford Sounds. It's nice that you managed to catch it on a day when there was some light, as it gives the image a lovely feel. The catch light on the curve of the cliff side is delightful, as is the waterfall that is cascading off the top. You've done well to capture the boat in the wake of the waterfall as it really enhances the sense of scale. I'd be inclined to crop out that bit of bright sky in the top right as it pulls attention away from the main heart of the image. That aside, this is a grand photograph that shows talent.

There is something about this image, and it's aided by the age of the frame, like something that's calling out from the past and urging me to have a closer look. I want to know the stories behind the people relaxing on the shoreline and if the two silver birch trees remain, perilously perching on the river bank, leaning over. I love the composition with the person in the boat neatly fitting in the space between the reeds and the birch. Just one of those images that makes me want to know more of the story behind its creation. Thank you for sharing.

This is such a wonderful depiction of a European city, making the most of the conditions. The composition works really well, with the taller, well lit building on the right acting as a beacon and leading the eye to the river snaking through the cityscape. The backdrop is mesmerising, with the hazy hills giving way to the colours of sunrise. The different facades of the houses catching the low light is just really lovely. A majestic cityscape that deserves it's high spot in the top 10, thank you for sharing.

Absolutely beautiful image that just captivates the imagination. The composition is really well done, with the decision to exclude the sky ensuring all our focus remains on the windmill, which is the heart of the image. Using the yellow crops at the bottom of the frame helps to tie the image together, with that side light catching beautifully on the hill. Just a masterclass on how to work with subject matter and light, a worthy winner.

A classic Canadian image that shows off the best of the landscape, even on an overcast day. In fact, I love that the overcast conditions have evened out the lighting throughout the scene, so our attention is focused on the colours of the mountains in comparison to the beautiful blue tones of the lake. The composition works well, with the rocks in the foreground contrasting with the blue of the water and the greens of the trees. The low cloud shrouding the mountains helps to contain the composition. Nicely done.

This is a quiet image, but one that I think has a lot of power. It's about the contrast between the warm yellow colours of the marshland and the beautiful azure blue of the the stream winding through. I think it takes a really special photographers eye to be able to seek out that composition from something that others might not see as interesting, whereas what you saw was a little bit of magic. Thanks for sharing your unique take on the world, it will hopefully encourage others to just look a little closer.

You've really picked a wonderful spot for this composition. I love the juxtaposition between the urban housing and the ancient monument, especially as the lighting is illuminating the monument as it towers above the rest of the landscape. The image is elevated further by the colours in the sky, with the warm tones complimenting the artificial lighting. One of those images that really tells a story, especially with the outline of the mountains in the background.

I love the story you're telling here with the atmospheric morning sun lighting up the mist in the distance, and the light creating a shadow of that fence moving through the heart of the composition. I love that the horse is one side of the fence and the tree is the other, balancing out the scene. I reckon a tighter crop would aid the image, and help the eye focus on the horse and I think cropping out some of the fence from the bottom may well improve the composition. That aside, there is plenty to enjoy here, thank you for sharing.

Gosh, this is a powerful image. I can only imagine what it felt like standing underneath that impressive and terrifying sky as the storm raged above. Including the little house on the left really adds some scale and context to the image. I'm not sure where the purple hue has come from, but I know the sky can certainly turn interesting colours when a storm is passing through. I once saw the sky above Birmingham in the UK turn green before a particularly fierce storm. One of those images that conveys the moment and a sense of place within a single frame.

I was immediately drawn to the lines and layers conveyed through this image. The reeds in the foreground are catching the light leading the eye to the middle with the darker tree line giving way to the textured sky, full of cloud. The highlights in the reeds and the cloud compliment each other, separated by the tree line. The monochrome process really helps to ensure there are no distracting colours and adds a touch of magic to the image.

A powerful and impactful black and white image that uses all the tonality at its disposal to make something special. The long exposure is really effective here, allowing for some movement in the water as it drifts over the shoreline. The movement of the people wandering around in the foreground is also really compelling as it adds some context. The strong lighting adds the monochrome conversion, and all in all this is a marvellous and powerful composition.

You've done well with the composition in this image. The portrait orientation means you have a strong foreground with those pebbles (helped by the low angle you've adopted) leading to the bold bridge in the mid ground and then that impressive mountain scape in the distance. The snowcapped peak really adds some texture to the scene, as does the cloud in the sky which almost looks as if it's drifting off the mountain top. The bright, harsh lighting works well.

This image is all about the autumnal colour. I like that you've captured the landscape between the seasons, with some of the trees having already turned yellow and others stubbornly hanging on to their green foliage. The colours contrast well with the reeds in the foreground and the granite colours of the mountain range behind. Although the sky is overcast, this helps to bring out the colours and ensure the tones are even throughout. The reflection on the lake is the detail that really tops off the composition. Nicely done.

This is a classic waterscape that uses the technique of long exposure to good effect. The fence line in the foreground acts as a leading line, leading the eye into the heart of the scene. The colours of sunset in the sky are delightful, as is the reflection in the smoothed out water. The water isn't completely smooth and a longer exposure may have helped with that, but the relationship between the sky and the water works well. Nicely done.
