New Joiners - Landscapes #787

May 2024

This image benefits from your elevated position where we're able to look out over the water to the architecture.

The colours of the architecture compliments the colours in the sky, which is slightly overcast but still harbours a little bit of colour as the sun either rises or sets.

The image would have benefitted from a slightly more considered composition so our attention fully remains on the main part of the architecture but other than that, this works well, thanks for sharing!

Gosh it has been a long time since I've seen this waterfall, so thank you for the reminder!

I like what you've done with the composition, using the yellow flowers as a way to lead into the heart of the image. The yellow colours compliment the green foliage and the portrait orientation works well, ensuring that the waterfall balances out the flowers.

There seems to be some lens flare at the top of the frame which distracts a little but otherwise, this demonstrates the beauty of the location. Thank you for sharing!

I really like the cinematic feel to this image, and the fact that it feels like it was shot on film, almost as if I'm looking at a slide from yesteryear.

The strong lighting in the foreground is really nice, catching on the pebbles and the seaweed, demonstrating the different textures and leading the eye into the heart the image. There we find the distant mountain, also catching the light. However, what really makes it pop is the cloud that is drifting along the summit and the abundance of seabirds taking flight. It provides energy and narrative to the scene and really tells a story.

Thank you so much for sharing!

I really love the feel of this image. It has a cinematic energy and could be the establishing shot of some thriller set in the swamplands.

I love the dead tree rising out the still waters, each reflecting back. They are separated from the background by the mist that is encroaching, giving the feeling like everything is closing in. The strong light catching on the branches really elevates the image.

The image seems a little low resolution which is a shame as it would be great to see this scene in it's full glory.

That aside, this works well, thanks for sharing.

I really like this image and I think your composition works well. The cracks in the rock, that have grown mossy over the years act as a powerful leading line towards the sea in the distance. The bold colours of the foliage and the water compliment the colours in the sky, and the inclusion of the person sitting on the left adds a sense of scale.

However, what really works in this image for me, is the inclusion of those cloud formations, signalling a change in the weather and potentially some incoming rain. I love how they're close to the horizon with the clear sky above, rising into it to fill the gap.

Lovely colours, great scenery, thanks for sharing!

The second I laid eyes on this image I had an inkling that it would be the winner. As it turns out there was some stiff competition but my first instinct was correct.

There is just so much going for this image. It's the perfect epitome of the seasons changing, when autumn begins to dissolve into winter.

I love your choice of composition, with the warmth of the reds and yellows at the bottom of the frame in the foreground and the cool blues of the snow capped mountains in the distance. The curve of the road that runs through the centre of the frame works really well, leading the eye from one part to another and your decision to keep in that bit of sky, balanced by the cloud above and below, compliments the rest of the composition!

Overall this is an image of which to feel proud. It's well shot and processed. Congrats on your 1st place!

A classic autumnal scene in the UK. It's hard to resist and is the staple of many a landscape photographer.

You've done the autumnal season justice with this rendition. I love that the trees are in different stages of decay, with some yellow, others orange and those right on the shoreline still green in colour.

The strong lighting really works well, catching and highlighting all the colours, reflecting in the still waters of the river. Your composition works well and all in all this is a lovely image that shows off why we love autumn so much!

I'm a sucker for a sunrise with a hint of mist and this is exactly what we get with this image.

The lines in the field move diagonally across the frame, whereas that line of mist appears to move in a different direction. The mist separates the field from the tree that is barely visible above, adding plenty of atmosphere to the image. This is improved by the light and colour catching on the cloud above the tree,

The horizon is a little off and a quick adjustment in post would improve the image. That said, nature does the talking here and you've done well to capture it.

This image is all about the light and contrast between the two trees that is highlighted by said light.

I like your composition, it allows the viewer to feel as if we're at the bottom of the stairs looking up towards the structure, with the trees inviting us in.

The greens on the left are complimented by the reds on the right and in turn the reds of the architecture. I like that you went for a portrait orientation as it means we aren't distracted too much by any other elements in the frame.

One of those images that tells a story and invites you in for a closer look.

This is a lovely demonstration of how effective and powerful monochrome conversions can be.

You've really used the highlights and the shadows to powerful effect in this image, and the result is an impressive architectural scene and it's relationship with nature.

Your decision to dampen down everything besides the bright, white dome on the right of the image pulls in the eye and ensures we end up in the place you want us to look.

Despite the low-key editing, there are some details still mildly visible and that adds to the mystery of the frame.

A really well done black and white image, thank you for sharing!

This part of Iceland is like catnip to your average landscape photographer, and for good reason! There is something so enticing and romantic about the chunks of ice that flow from the glacier into the sea, washing up on the beach and providing an irresistible foreground.

This is a wonderful take on this location, with your composition ensuring that the iceberg takes centre stage in the frame, complimented by the 'swooshery' of the tide surrounding it.

The colours are muted, which works in your favour, with the blues of the ice matching the blues in the overcast morning sky. There is just a hint of warmth in the cloud that sets off the whole composition. An understated, yet marvellous take on this well known location, thank you for sharing!

You see, I've gone round a few times about which image I prefer above the others and this is just magic and different in it's own right.

Whereas the other images leaned into the warmer tones this is on the cooler side of the colour wheel.

I love the foreground, with those distinctive flowers taking centre stage contrasting with the turquoise blues of the water in the distance. The mist adds some much needed atmosphere and the inclusion of the waterfall down on the coast is a lovely detail that just sets off the frame nicely.

A genuinely delightful image that demonstrates your evident ability as a photographer!

There is a magic to the northern lights that will never get old. There are just magnificent and currently with all the activity on the sun, the next few years might mean we see even more activity. There is something poetic about the fact such beauty is caused by something activity trying to harm us.

This is a splendid panoramic which demonstrates the beauty of the landscape down below and the glorious aurora above.

Astrophotography is hard at the best of times but having the react and compose during the aurora adds another level entirely. You've done really well to keep detail in both the sky and the landscape. For that alone it's worthy of a spot in the top ten. Thank you for sharing!

I'm assuming this image is from the same location as the one that placed above it judging by the rock formations, and you decided to shoot a little wider. That light that was present in the previous image is also present here, catching on both the rock and also the tree that sits on top of it.

I like the greenery in the foreground and how it contrasts to the blue in the sky above. Those tones are matched by the warmer colours. Again, the longish exposure creates some movement in the water and that in turn creates a sense of narrative. The cloud formations also add a little extra something as well.

Overall, the classy scene, thanks for sharing!

You have several entries in the top ten, which is generally something I try to avoid, but the images were so good it would be unfair to leave them out, so I hope you enjoy your placements and my review of each.

It was difficult to pick one above the others but this one just stood out a little more. The light in this scene is delightful, catching on those rock faces and bringing out the warm tones which are then replicated in the cloud above.

You do well to add some narrative to an otherwise still image with an exposure long enough to capture the wave splashing up against the rocks and that movement just elevates the whole image

A really enjoyable seascape that uses all the elements in the frame to powerful effect.
