New Joiners - Landscapes #820

October 2024

There have been some wonderful mountainscapes in this cohort of images and this is another great example.

Your positioning works well and allows the viewer to feel as though they are above the scene looking down into the valley. The leading line of the road in the foreground keeps the eye moving from front to back, finding our way to the layers in the mid ground.

The landscape has an alien feel to it, and seems like it would be harsh to exist in. This feeling is enhanced by the beautiful rose light that is making the peaks and slopes glow. This is why I love sunrise, there is a calmness to the light and atmosphere that cannot be replicated.

Your choice of orientation works well, with the frame keeping our attention focused on the hills and their relationship to each other. Nicely seen, captured and processed. Thank you for sharing.

I don't know what you shot this on as you haven't provided the EXIF data, but if you edited it in snapseed I'm thinking that it might be a mobile phone, which makes this even more impressive!

It almost doesn't look real, but it most certainly is, and it must have been just magic to witness this happening in real life.

The light is tremendous, catching off the top of the peak in the distance, casting light up into the sky which is then reflected in the water.

Including the boat in the composition is smart as that gives us a focal point and the mist in the background adds some separation between the boat and the far shoreline.

An epic photo in the truest sense of the word, thank you for sharing!

This is an image that demonstrates the power of contrast. The bottom of the frame is filled with the brightly coloured flowers of the Canola field, with the occasional hint of green rippling through the sea of yellow. The top of the frame is dominated by the moody, threatening sky, grey and imposing with the promise of a storm.

What makes the image work is how you use these two halves in the frame. The panoramic ratio works well, and the fact you've given a third of the frame to the flowers and two thirds to the sky enhances the drama.

An impressive scene that you've done well to capture. Thanks for sharing.

There is something very cinematic about this image which is helped by the incredible light you've captured which is flooding through the landscape and illuminating everything in its path. You've leaned into the warmth that has been created by the light, and allowed the orange tones to be the dominant force in the frame.

I actually like that you've included a man made object into an otherwise natural landscape because it adds some contrast and it gives the whole scene a sense of scale.

The composition works well, and although some of the highlights are blown out, this doesn't detract from the image much. There is plenty to enjoy in this frame, thank you for sharing.

This image is all about the composition and using all the elements in the frame effectively. In the foreground there is the rocky outcrop covered in flowers that leads the eye to an empty bench facing out to sea. Beyond is the water, and distant rock formations off the coast. Above is the setting sun, just sinking below the clouds that are creating layers across the sky.

There is a glow to everything and the portrait orientation works really well to ensure that all the elements in the frame are in relationship with each other. The processing is subtle, but enough to bring out the colours of the sunset. Well seen, captured and processed, thank you for sharing.

This image is all about the textures and layers in the landscape. I like the tight framing that means the sky is excluded and not distracting the eye. The greens of the valley are in stark contrast with the reds and browns of the rocks above the canyon. The hazy light adds some atmosphere and the eye is drawn from the front of the frame to the back, exploring all the details. Nicely done, thank you for sharing.

I love a good top down drone shot, especially when the subject matter warrants it, and this definitely falls into that category. There is something really satisfying about the lines and the shapes created by the terraces, something that can be seen from the usual perspective, but is enhanced here in your drone shot.

This gives the image an abstract feel and encourages the viewer to look closer. The light helps to pull out different lines and shapes, with different shades of yellow and green permeating through the scene.

The composition works well with the terraces fanning out from the centre, framed by the trees in all directions. Nicely done, thanks for sharing!

The height at which you've taken this image really makes the composition work. It makes the viewer feel as though they are looking down on the scene, taking it all in. The snowy peaks give way to grey and granite rock, which in turn stands in contrast to the vibrant blue of the water in the lake below. The way all these elements contrast in the frame really makes the image work.

My only suggestion would be to allow a little bit more head room at the top of the frame as the mountain peak is almost touching it which makes the whole composition feel just a little bit uncomfortable. That aside there is plenty to enjoy in this image and it must have been an amazing scene to witness, thank you for sharing!

This is a marvellous, impressive scene that must have been amazing to witness. There is so much going on that it encourages the viewer to look closer. There is the delicious light that is catching on the mountains in the foreground, and the added atmosphere created by the low cloud and mist. In the distance, the peaks are cooler in tone, with cloud drifting over the tops, but still catching some of that light.

Your composition works well, with the portrait orientation keeping the frame tight and our attention focussed on the light and the mountains.

The layering also works well, with the darker foreground giving way to the lighter layers in the distance. Even more impressively, this image was taken on an iPhone, once again demonstrating that the best camera is the one you have on you.

Overall, a stunning scene that you've done well to capture in all it's glory, thank you for sharing.

You titled this image 'Autumn Calling' which is the perfect moniker. Those trees on the shoreline are definitely wearing their autumnal coat, glowing orange in the strong side light.

You've done well to capture both the trees and the reflection. I like that the trees on the left are in sunlight and the tree on the right is in darkness, as it adds some interest to the frame and shows the difference that light can make. The composition is topped off by the cloud that is sitting perfectly above the 'v' shape created by the trees, and again reflecting back in the water.

Thanks for sharing!

Sometimes you just have to take a snap of a beautiful morning just to ensure that you've committed it to memory. These kind of mornings are my favourite kind, when the mist is drifting across the landscape and the sun is high enough to illuminate all the atmosphere.

Your composition works, with the road leading the eye into the scene, and the mist creating some separation between foreground and background, the distant mountains rising up out of the mist.

Well seen and captured, thanks for sharing.

This image is all about the blues and how they work together in the frame.

There is the turquoise blue of the waters in the foreground, that gives way to the cooler blues that are evident in the water around the outcrop on which the lighthouse stands. Then there is the blue in the sky, permeated by the big cumulous clouds.

The blues are complimented by the red of the shipping boat and the white of the lighthouse.

The horizon doesn't look to be completely straight which is something that could be addressed in post and that would make the image even more effective.

An interesting scene that takes advantage of the colours visible. Thanks for sharing.

I absolutely love getting above the mist on a morning like this and being able to look out across the sea of fog and atmosphere, watching bits of the landscape appear and disappear. It's a beautiful experience but often one that is hard to replicate in a single image. However, you've done a good job of that in this frame, helped by the elevated position that can be achieved using a drone.

You've given some context by including some of the landscape that isn't covered in the mist and the details are that making it through the mist and into the sunlight are lovely. It can be tricky shooting directly into the sun, and this has caused you problems here as the highlights around the sun are blown out and a little distracting. However, there is still plenty to enjoy here and it must have been a marvellous morning both above and below. Thanks for sharing.

This image shows off the Lake District in all its rainy perfection. You just have to put on your waterproofs and get out there whatever the weather.

I love the mood that you have captured in this image, with the stone wall leading the eye into the frame and the brown bracken covering much of the landscape. I like that there is the hint of a fell in the distance, framed by the rainy, threatening sky above. The rain is definitely coming.

Nicely seen, captured and processed, thank you for sharing!
