This is a well seen and composed image, with the photographer thoughtfully using the tree's shape to frame the misty mountain behind. The vibrant green spring foliage provides colour impact and the low, soft light adds warmth and contrast. The vertical composition really suits this scene.

This is a really well-timed shot which captures the beauty and motion of the crashing waves. The waves nicely frame the sun and the backlighting really highlights every single droplet of spray. The photo boasts some lovely shapes and texture. Although the sun is slightly blown out (overexposed), for me it is not enough to undermine the photo.

What a wonderful winter landscape. The snowy trees, reflections, and pristine white snow combine well. The contrast between the clean, white snowy landscape and dark, inky water is really striking. I suspect the photographer has intentionally edited this file to be dark and moody, but I might just lighten it slightly. There are a few dust spots that need tidying-up too.

This shot boasts lovely light and drama. But when composing and editing your shots, always remember 'border control'! Carefully check the edges of the frame for any unwanted, unnecessary distractions. In this instance, an out of focus twig toward the top left corner really pulls the eye and dilutes the shots quality.

This is a great example of how a photographer can generate their own foreground interest. By timing and framing this shot carefully, the shape of the incoming wave forms a lovely lead-in line. I love how the wave fits neatly into the bottom right corner and leads the eye diagonally towards the setting sun and golden reflections in the sand.

Wow - what an impressive landscape this is! This scene is full of lovely lines, texture, layers and interest. The inclusion of people adds a focal point and an important sense of scale. I find the slice of rock (in shade) in the bottom right corner slightly dominant and jarring, but otherwise this is a well composed and engaging shot.

This is a nicely constructed image - the rocks, seaweed, and reflections create solid foreground interest and the background islands provide a focal point. There is activity in the sky too. However, the horizon isn't level and this really dilutes the shot's quality. Thankfully, this is a simple thing to check and correct using a photo editing app.

This shot (and the experience) was well worth the long drive through the night. The Northern Lights are hugely photogenic, but you see far too many photographs where the photographer hasn't really considered the landscape below. However, this view is well selected, boasting interest and providing context. The shot is well captured, although I might just tidy-up some of the foliage creeping into the bottom right corner - a tiny bit of cloning or cropping will quickly resolve these distractions. Well done.

These are lovely foggy conditions, which soften and enhance the landscape. However, while this shot has mood and mystery, I find the foreground people are awkwardly placed and distracting. While people can add interest and scale to landscape photos, in this instance, I think the photographer would have been better to wait for the walkers to clear.

This is a nicely constructed shot, boasting lovely textures and layers. The yucca stands-out crisply against the white sand. However, a slightly higher viewpoint would have allowed the photographer to separate the entire plant from its background - as it is, the top of the plant just merges slightly with the foliage behind. It might seem like I'm nitpicking, but this type of refinement and separation can really strengthen a composition.

Not everyone likes infrared images, but results can look surreal, otherworldly, and they provide a very different take on the landscape. I like this shot. The IR effect is pretty subtle, but it boasts lovely light-play, contrast, and layering. The tree is maybe slightly too central for my taste, but it provides a valuable focal point and anchor. A visually engaging result.

When Mother Nature provides this type of beauty, our job as a photographer feels relatively straightforward. However, rainbows can be tricky to capture - you ideally need a wide-angle lens and it can be hard to keep filters and lenses free of raindrops. A polarising filter can help enhance a rainbow's intensity further. I love the mood and atmosphere of this image.

You would probably describe this as a 'postcard' shot. Beautiful blue skies, turquoise water, and remote islands combine to create a shot that wouldn't look out of place in a holiday brochure. But this is a well-constructed shot - the inclusion of the two boats to the right of the frame adds interest and scale.

This is a really well seen and captured image. A short telephoto is the perfect lens choice for isolating this type of detail and interest within the landscape. I love the light, shade, and contrast. The wavy texture of the sand patterns pull the viewer's eye through the image. A beautifully simple intimate landscape.

Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘Landscapes’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Animals’.

I think there is too much sky in this image. When the sky is clear and uninteresting, place more emphasis on foreground interest and motion. In this instance, two-thirds landscape and just one-third sky would be a better ratio. And consider getting closer to the water and wet reflective sand to help exclude the messy, disturbed sand. Just a small change in viewpoint can radically alter a photo.
