New Joiners - Landscapes #913

October 2025

I love sunrise. I know that it's a little harder to get up, but when you get a sky like this one, it is all worth it. Sunrise in August is especially early so kudos to you for capturing this.

I like the different elements that make up the frame, from the silhouetted fence at the bottom to the water reflecting the glorious colours of the dawn.

I like that there is a line of cloud and then some more colour above it. The bank of cloud at the top of the frame doesn't add a huge amount to the image and I'd consider cropping it down a little, maybe to an 8x10 or a square.

Nicely seen and captured, thank you for sharing.

What I really enjoyed about this image is how you've used the bridge as a compositional aid to frame the sun. I like the angular shapes of the bridge, from the triangle shape in the foreground which is replicated throughout the composition, and the verticals which complement all the diagonals.

I think it takes a keen eye to spot a decent composition in functional architecture and you've demonstrated that this is something within your creative powers.

Bridge aside, I love how you've framed the setting sun and it speaks to the relationship between human made elements and the natural world.

Really nicely done, thank you for sharing.

Who doesn't love a rainbow? I certainly do, and I don't care if they are considered cliche, I will always find them fascinating and I will forever be excited to capture them when they appear.

It can be difficult to get a decent picture of a rainbow because the light is often behind you. Thankfully that's not an issue here. Not only have you captured the rainbow arching into the sky, but the river running through the valley acts as a thoroughly pleasing leading line into the heart of the frame.

Another great example of why the best camera is the one you have on you, meaning you're always ready to capture magic like you have in this image.

Really nicely done, thank you for sharing.

This is one of those images that could easily be overlooked, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I wasn't sure what I was looking at when I first clicked into this image. However, once my brain adjusted and I read your description, I realised that this is a very special photo that uses all the elements in the frame to powerful effect.

I love images that challenge perceptions and play with perspective and yours does both. This could be a vast vista or a small macro image showing off details. It asks the viewer to take a closer look and explore the image deeper.

The toxic lake below is a myriad of colours, fascinating to the eye and where it drifts to first when exploring the frame. I love the way the river meanders throughout the image, iridescent in colour.

However, the detail that makes this image sing is the flamingoes flying over, far below our vantage point, their pink hues complementing the colour of the water.

An absolutely fascinating image that pushes the boundaries and tells an intriguing and important story. Thanks so much for sharing.

This is a classic landscape that does what it sets out to do - show off the location in some interesting conditions and dramatic light. I'm not entirely sure where this was taken but it puts me in mind of the Scottish Highlands or Snowdonia.

You're lucky to have gotten such magical conditions, with the snow in the foreground complementing the snow on the mountains in the distance. This is a perfect example of when to put the horizon in the middle (breaking the rule of thirds), because the reflection is one of the most important elements in the frame, especially as the water is calm.

The sidelight catching the mountain is magical, adding some rose coloured warmth to the scenery.

Well seen, captured and processed. An image of which you can feel proud.

This is such an interesting lighthouse. I've seen many colours and shapes over the years, but not one quite like this. That alone makes this image intriguing, but there is more to this image than just the architecture.

The conditions lend themselves to the colour of the lighthouse, bold red, standing out against the blue tones in the rest of the frame. I love the texture in the clouds and the blue colour of the mountains in the distance. Your composition also helps, especially where you've placed the lighthouse in the frame and the room you've given it.

Really interesting image, well seen and captured, thank you for sharing.

To me this could be the opening frame of a movie, as it has an inherent cinematic feel, helped by the connotations relating to the location and that impressive, almost overwhelming light.

Shooting into the sun can be tricky because there is always the possibility of blowing out your highlights, and this has happened with the sun but it really doesn't impact the images that much, as if it was an intentional choice to lean into the cinematic feel.

It's worth it for the silhouette of the trees. I love that we have one tree front and centre and the rest melt away into that warm light. I also like that the sun has been sandwiched between the bank of low cloud and the top of the mountain range in the distance, adding to the drama.

An impressive scene, well captured. Thank you for sharing.

Winter is one of my favourite times of the year, just missing out to Autumn which has so much to offer. However, during the winter months we get opportunities to shoot landscapes such as this one. In any other season it may well have been considered to be a bit dull, but the frost has completely transformed the potentially mundane into a magical winter wonderland.

You've done well to manage the bright, low winter sun by hiding it behind the tree and dampening it down. This also means that you've caught some shafting light which elevates the composition.

The portrait orientation works well, and including a little bit of that clear blue sky enhances the sense of cold. There is a hint of a blue colour cast which is to be expected when shooting in these conditions. This can be easily corrected in post but other than that, this is a really magical image and makes me look forward to winter, thank you for sharing.

I see a lot of images from this particular location, and although the composition is always similar, the light is never the same twice, so there is always something new and interesting to look at. In this particular rendition the light is strong and there isn't a cloud in the sky.

Looking up into the cloudless blue makes for a really bold contrast to the deep reds and oranges that dominate the rest of the frame. I love the curve created by the gap and the wonderful texture woven into the rock face.

Well seen, captured and processed. Always good to see a decent image from this location.

The is a classic landscape that uses all the elements in the frame to powerful effect. Your vantage point is high up so we're looking over the water to the distant island. There is lots of greenery but also evidence of human dwellings, both elements co-existing.

I'm assuming this was taken at sunset, with the warm late light catching in the clouds, adding some colour to the sky and contrasting with the moody grey clouds that dominate the top of the image.

Well seen and captured, thank you for sharing.

It's quite something to be able to capture two weather related elements in one single image. You have the rainbow, at sunset, arching across the sky, catching all of that late light. It is in direct relationship with the bolt of lightning that completely fills the frame from right to left, interacting with the rainbow.

You say it's a once in a lifetime photo and I would agree. Definitely one to print off and put on your wall. Thank you for sharing.

This is an impressive seascape that uses all the elements in the frame to powerful effect.

In the foreground we have the beach at low tide, with a singular rock capturing our attention, surrounded by water. The leads the eye to the large rock formations, and the headland, in the distance. There is enough wet sand to help create a compelling reflection and the warm hues in the sky contrast with the cool tones that feature heavily throughout the rest of the frame.

Nicely seen and captured. The processing is a little heavy handed, especially in the sky, but that's just my personal preference and each photographer has their own unique style. Thanks for sharing.

Every time I see an image taken in the Dolomites the urge to visit increases and your image is no exception. In fact, I'm really enjoying seeing a slightly different take on the area rather than the usual vista.

The portrait orientation really works well here, ensuring that the image becomes about the two main elements in the frame -- the green slopes in the foreground and the granite grey mountain in the distance.

The gentle sidelight that is catching on the greenery is delightful, picking out details and creating texture. There is some repetition in the shape of the foreground with the peaks in the distance which is satisfying to the eye.

This could easily be a composition that many would overlook so I'm glad you had the creative foresight to capture it, especially in nice light. Thank you for sharing.

Meet the expert judge

Some images are all about large and impressive vistas, and some images are more about telling a story about the landscape. They're representational to a certain extent, but there will be a few different elements in the frame that helps to tell a story. For me, this image is all about storytelling.

This doesn't mean that the landscape element of the image is not of importance, and I would say that your choice to shoot when the sun is low definitely helps to elevate the composition.

This is all about nature & humans co-existing with the surfers waiting for the perfect wave to sweep in. I like that you've hit the shutter just before the wave has appeared. It gives the image a sense of anticipation and tension. The inclusion of the people in the water adds scale and I love that you've left the drones in, adding to the narrative.

An intriguing scene that is helped by some fabulous light. Thank you for sharing.

When I first looked at this image I thought I was looking at a woodland scene on a foggy morning. That would have been intriguing and interesting enough to capture my attention as there is something romantic about misty woodland, but knowing this is from a forest fire makes the image even more impactful. It speaks to our relationship to nature and the impact of climate change and is a reminder of the power photography can wield, capturing images that demonstrate the damage that is being to natural spaces such as this one.

Thematics aside, I like the portrait orientation that keeps the composition tight in the frame and the muted tones help to elevate the image further. Nicely seen and captured, thank you for sharing.
