New Joiners - Landscapes #914

October 2025

Rugged exploration is a term that comes to mind with this photo. While this image would work well as a advertisement for the car, the light in the background and the overall colour palette makes this a great landscape photo too. A well balanced composition with interest in the foreground, midground, and background. Great work!

A beautiful reflection shot of the iconic Lake Moraine. I can see the care and consideration in your composition. The warm light on the mountains contrasts nicely with the cool glacial tones of the shadows and water. Although the sky is overexposed, the main subject matter is exposed correctly and the white sky doesn't distract from the stunning scene. Good work!

Landscapes at night, illuminated by the moon have an ethereal beauty that is unmatched. The mountains by themselves with the moonlight etched rugged texture would be a stand out image on its own. The extra element of the fire with the smoke lit up and blowing away in the wind adds an intriguing point of interest. The exposure, details and focus are spot on too! With such a wonderful shot, I just have to make a couple of suggestions to add more professional polish. Although you can't see a horizon line, once you notice that the mountains are ever so slightly tilting down on the right, you can't unsee it. Combine this straightening with a tighter crop by keeping the aspect ratio and pulling the crop down from the top centre to remove some excess dark sky, and you have an even more striking image. Great work!

You've done well to capture this well balance and carefully considered composition. The beautifully warm glowing light pairs well with the subject matter. Taking a photo that combines abstract macro shapes with fine details is not an easy task, and you've accomplished that here. The addition of the human element scales the scene while introducing a story element. Well done!

A fascinating scene with a clearly popular location deserted, with the reason looming ominously in the background sky. The repetitive tan umbrellas almost take on the role of standing figures. Their warm tones contrasting sharply against the deep blue of the stormy sky. Great capture!

A beautifully exposed waterfall shot. The harsh sunlight would normally create difficult lighting conditions for the bright highlights and the deep shadows. You've done well here to expose the details in the water while still keeping the information in the shadows. The viewers eye is also drawn to the central area of the waterfall.

A wonderful view of the mountains and valley. The distant atmosphere has a subtle haze that helps create a layered effect to the mountains and depth to the image. The line of cloud helps to hold the eye in at the top of the frame. The colourful prayer flags are just enough to draw attention and add interest in the foreground. They also add scale to the landscape. Nice capture!

You have a good eye to see the potential in a relatively simple scene. The line of trees combined with a backdrop of layered hills has a wonderfully calming aesthetic. The overall warm tones work well with the empty field in the foreground. This shot could even work well as a more panoramic image without the sun and excess sky.

The colours and details throughout the sky and water in this image are spectacular. There's an almost metallic shine to the light and subtle cloud reflections on the calm sea. I like the idea of using the open space to isolate the boat in this expansive environment. I do feel that the boat is either distracting from the light, or should be the central focus. Try a crop that cuts out the grey of the sky at the top and centres the boat and see if it has a greater impact. Or if you want to challenge your photoshop skills, try flipping the direction of the boat to face into the frame! Still a beautiful exposure with captivating light and colours. Well done!

There is some beautiful light in this shot! The road also creates a strong leading line drawing the viewers eye into the scene. A perfect morning to be out walking the dogs. From a technical standpoint to improve its chances in contests, try cropping the photo to the top right area, so the dog on the road and the sun are diagonally balanced. Although one dog might be left out it improves the visual aesthetics to an outside observer.

If this tree could have it's own profile picture, this would be it. You've done an amazing job to showcase the lighting and shape of this tree, while making a stunning coastal scene the secondary element. There is lots to explore in the background with so much depth and detail, and the pop of colour in the foreground is a nice touch too.

I can see your vision and thought process with this shot and the calming effect it can have. While your experiences with the moment help recreate the scene in your mind, from an outsiders point of view the main subject and feel of the image can get a little lost. While the full photo is great for your memories, a great way to make it more memorable to another viewer is with a simple crop! A square crop with the boardwalk in the centre, or a 2:3 ratio vertical crop with the boardwalk in the centre and equal parts water, land, and sky. Or a landscape orientation of the reeds, mountain and boardwalk. You have a good eye for the interesting. Well done!

A very fiery colour palette! From the light in the sky to the scattering of red light on the mountain rocks, and of course, the tiny red helicopter. I feel that the inclusion of all the negative space works well with the subject matter of the photo. A small presence of man in the sky above the vast landscape it is charged with keeping safe.

I really like the feel of this image and the gentle light shining on the side of the mountain. The muted deep greens add to the mood of the scene and suit the location. I find that the path gets kind of lost at this scale, and the photo could benefit from a tighter central crop. One that cuts out a lot of the darker part of the sky and the bare patch of ground in the foreground. This way viewers might even notice the hiker on the path more readily!
