This boat has so much character and the photo does a great job of showing it. The angle not only shows the interesting curved shape of the vessel, but also the seemingly random placement of everything onboard. The little pops of colour stand out well from the deep weathered texture of the wood. The fading light helps set a sleepy tone to the unmanned boat. As unique as the boat seems, the ships seen in the distance speak of industry and purpose to the design. Well done!
A wonderful shot of the Milky Way with an interesting foreground element. The illuminated windows of the building make it seem occupied, while the lack of roof says abandoned. There is a good balance of exposure between the foreground and the stars. The shooting star (or satellite) helps to break up the more empty patch of sky. Good work!
A striking, high-key, high contrast black and white photo. The visual elements are captivating. The large rock formation creates an interesting shape as it is reflected in the still water. The group of people add scale to the landscape, while also creating an interesting reflection as they appear to be walking on the surface of the water. Well done!
A lovely black and white forest scene that works for many different moods. Depending on the state of mind of the viewer this image could be calming, as a relaxing hike in the woods. Or it could evoke a sense of loneliness, with a long empty path ahead. Or even a feeling of fear, with an eerie foggy trail through a spooky forest. However you see it, it's a beautifully taken photo!
A visually appealing array of natural and manmade elements. The curving road draws the eye in between the earthy red rocks, while the rocks themselves provide leading lines to the central focal point. I think the image would benefit from a tighter crop that removes the horizontal band in the immediate foreground and some of the empty sky. This would help bring the viewers attention even more to the main element and keep it there.
A wonderfully calming image with a grand scale wonderful pops of autumn colour. It feels like there are two good photos in one here. With one being the mist drifting through the forest covered hillside, and the other being the tree-lined shore reflecting in a quiet lake. A beautifully exposed image with lots of detail, well done!
An absolutely stunning panorama with gorgeous golden light and dynamic energy. The bright sun is perfectly balanced with the crashing wave over the rocks. The buildings on the shore look warm and inviting, while contrasting the rich blue of the sky above. In the open horizon on the right sits a tiny gem of light illuminating a wave crest. The rocks and foreground vegetation act like a bowl containing the wonderous scene before us. Great work!
Such an expansive view! That epic stretched shadow works wonders, cutting across the natural lines of the plain that draw the eye deeper into the scene. The people and car do a great job of adding scale, making the landscape look so much larger, and more empty, than it would without them. They also set the position of the camera. Without the human element it would be easy to assume the photo was taken from eye level, as there is no other reference point. Great work!
Vibrant red clouds at sunset are enough to make anyone stop and appreciate the beauty of nature. Even better when you get the scene reflected in the puddles of water left behind by the rain. The reflection and silhouette of the tree definitely make this photo more than just the standard sunset shot, but I feel that by cropping a lot of the dark sky at the top and the virtually black area at the bottom, the viewer would be able to appreciate more of central details in the photo. It's still a lovely capture!
Is there any better canvas for the fading light of the sun than this cliff face? The mix of weathered, cold, grey rock with bright, warm sunlight is nature at its finest. The vantage point of this photo provides a good amount of foreground that doesn't distract from the main scene, while giving the viewer a sense of place. The subtle reflection adds a nice touch too.
While flipping the image here does play with the perception of the landscape, making the reflection on the lake appear like a ceiling, I find the original orientation to be a more appealing and captivating photo. By all means enjoy your own preference for how to represent the image, but in future contests I think you'd have better luck with the un-flipped image. It's a lovely scene with good composition and exposure!
The part I love most about this shot is obviously the shimmering reflection. So much so that I think the trees on the top are holding it back from being a really beautiful fine art abstract shot. Try cropping the image to just the reflection, any aspect ratio should do, and see how it turns into an amazing abstract landscape photo. Something that would look incredible printed large and on a wall!

A well composed shot that tells a story in its own time. The viewers eye is initially drawn to the bright highlights in the distance. Having found only soft details and the natural contrast of the trees, it then locks on the tiny platform jutting out below with two human figures. This discovery immediately gives the scene a sense of scale and sends the viewer back to exploring the image with wonder and awe.
A beautiful panoramic snowy scene. The wind swept snow provides a foreground interest while giving the appearance of a white desert. The photo is overall well exposed given the difficult lighting conditions of bright sunlight on highly reflective snow. The central darker region pushes the eye to either side and towards the distant mountain peaks. Well done!
