Riding in a hot air balloon can really give you a different perspective on the landscape. A bit like drone photography but without having to be the pilot.
I like that in this image we get the elevated perspective but we also get the context of the other hot air balloons in the distance. This helps to break up the image, particularly as there is a lot of sky. I like that there are only three other balloons and they are evenly spaced out across the frame.
The conditions on the ground really add to the composition, with the low mist flowing across the landscape, catching the morning light. It must have been wonderful to witness from the hot air balloon so thank you for sharing.
You've captured some of my favourite conditions in this frame – snow, mist and light. The trees in the foreground have a healthy smattering of snow, and are separated from the background by that stretch of low cloud/mist wafting its way through the frame.
I like that we're given a glimpse of the trees in the distance through the gap in the low cloud. The sidelight catching on the cloud provides some colour and contrast to the rest of the frame.
It must have been a beautiful morning to witness with your own eyes so thanks for sharing this so we too can experience the conditions.
What really stood out to me about this image is your use of depth of field. You've found a way to make the abundant foliage something that works to your advantage and rather than shoot the image at a low aperture, you've opted for a more creative approach.
By capturing the image at f/4.5, the waterfall in the distance is in focus and the foliage around it is more blurred, encouraging the eye to move through the scene and land on the waterfall.
I love the lush greens of the trees leaves and how that contrasts with the overcast sky above. Nicely seen, composed and captured. Thanks for sharing.
This is an intriguing image full of texture and shape. Your composition works well with the diagonal rock coming in from the left side to meet the more rounded rock on the bottom right. This complements the rocks in the distance that are also at a diagonal angle in opposition to the one closer to the front of the frame.
The colours are still evident, even through it's overcast and there is no light. I like that it's all one colour but just different variations on that colour.
Nicely seen, captured and processed, thanks for sharing.
There is something whimsical about this image that makes it rather endearing. There is a nostalgia in the colours of the buildings and the sign that put me in mind of the 90s. This is helped by the backdrop of sunset and made more surreal by the absence of any people, only a few birds.
Although it was shot on an iPhone, it has a somewhat filmic quality to it, like it could be the opening shot of a movie.
An intriguing image that gives me an uneasy feeling, encouraging me to look closer. Thank you for sharing.
There are two images of snowy trees entered into this contest that I've written a review for. Both were taken on an iPhone 14 and both have a completely different approach. This is always really nice to see because it demonstrates how we all see things differently and each interpretation is valid.
The other image went for a monochrome conversion whereas you've leaned into the colours that are already there. The cool tones of the overcast day enhanced by the mist that is visible in the background.
I like that you've opted for a portrait frame, ensuring that everything is neatly positioned and mimicking the upright nature of the pines that dominate the composition.
Moody and intriguing, I like the blue tones and the subject matter, so thank you for sharing.
I like the simple, yet effective composition that you've opted for with this image.
The cloudless sky acts as the bold backdrop for the sand dune and that low sidelight really catches on the dune, bringing out the shapes and textures. I like that you've composed with a lot of negative space as it gives the image an abstract feel to it.
The textures in the dune are fascinating and encouraged me to take a closer look. Overall this is an impressive image that demonstrates your eye for a composition. The blue/orange colour combination works really well. An appealing image, thanks for sharing!
I take pictures of my dog any opportunity I get, and from the looks of this, you're probably someone who does the same.
It's even better when the conditions make for not just a snap of your dog but for an actual decent landscape image too. The low light, either at sunrise or sunset, is illuminating the trees that flank the far side of the water, bringing out the autumnal colours. Above, the sky is full of texture and clouds, and that in turn is reflecting in the water below. This alone would have made for an interesting landscape image, but including the dog just adds something extra in the form of scale and narrative. I love that the dog is looking off into the distance, standing is silhouette.
A lovely image, one to treasure, thanks for sharing.
The desolate, yet beautiful landscape of Utah. These rock formations could quite easily by mistaken for an alien landscape rather than something here on earth. The harsh, jagged rocks speak to even harsher conditions that they have endured over the years.
That harshness is in direct contrast to the soft colours in the sky. Pastel pinks and purples rising from the cloud, like a halo above the snow capped peaks in the distance. The hint of residual heat lingering in the atmosphere.
The composition works well, with the road leading the eye into the frame. However, there is a lot of sky which unbalances the frame somewhat. I'd be inclined to crop into a 16:9 or a 16:10 so the pinks of the sky remain but the blank space above is removed.
That aside, there is plenty to enjoy here, helped by your elevated position. Thank you for sharing.
These are my kind of conditions. Moody skies with the threat of rain right at either end of the day so there is a hint of colour in the sky.
That sky becomes the backdrop to the interesting foliage in the foreground. The tree is seemingly growing out of the water and stands in contrast to the landscape around it.
There is some atmosphere in the distance that softens the landscapes and makes the hills somewhat hazy. This helps to make the tree stand out. I like that the cloud breaks just above the tree, adding to the drama.
I would crop the image a little more at the bottom to get rid of that rock as there is not enough space between it and the bottom of the frame, making the composition uncomfortable. With that crop, the composition would work even better, but that aside this is an intriguing, moody image that really shows off your keen eye. Thanks for sharing.
The minute I clicked onto this image I knew it would be in the top ten. There is something ethereal about this stand of trees, particularly because of the conditions in which they have been photographed. The mist in the background separates the trees in the foreground from those in the distance. The black trunks standing out against the white snow.
The little stream that weaves its way through the woodland helps to lead the eye from front to back and I like the hint of light in the sky that is illuminating the top of the frame.
If you were inclined to, the removal of the little stick right at the front of the frame would balance out the image as it pulls the eye away from the rest of the composition, but I appreciate that some people prefer not to alter their photos in such a way.
An impressive scene that benefits from the 50mm focal length. Thank you for sharing.
The infamous Kelpies. Fascinating sculptures that draw people in. I've seen many images of them over the years and this is amongst the most intriguing. I like that you've bided your time and ensured the conditions are just right to get a mix of ambient and artificial light. The ambient is the last embers of sunlight catching on the clouds in the sky. The artificial is the purple glow of the Kelpies themselves, standing out against the landscape.
The composition is almost spot on, I'd just make the crop a tiny bit tighter on the left side as there is a little too much frame compared to the right side so it feels a little unbalanced. Other than that there is plenty to enjoy about these images, thank you for sharing!
Who doesn't love a rainbow? One of nature's most extravagant shows that always makes me smile when it happens. What we have here though is not just a rainbow, but a double rainbow and one that is incredibly bright.
I love the differentiation between the first arc and the second, with that band of rain getting darker the further up we go. Although the foreground isn't much to write home about, the rainbow itself does the heavy lifting and there is much to enjoy here. A fascinating image that really shows up how remarkable rainbows can be. Thanks for sharing.
This image is all about juxtaposition. In the foreground we have the natural world in the form of the shoreline of the sea. The waves, ever the slave to the tide, are caught in motion making their way towards the shoreline.
Above, the sky, filled with the colour of sunset, high cloud catching the last of the light. A constant companion to the water below.
In between is the skyline. A creation of human design with buildings of different sizes rising up from the waterside to meet the sky. The juxtaposition between nature and human made works well and enhances the composition by providing some narrative.
Well seen, captured and composed. Thanks for sharing.

This is a stark, bold monochrome image that uses the conditions for maximum effect.
It's hard to tell, but I think there is some snow on the trees and that gives the image an almost infrared feel to it. That is further enhances by the way the sky is almost dark, standing in contrast to the well lit landscape below.
The composition works well, with the trees flanking the rock that sits between them. The strong lighting really helps the image out, making the monochrome conversion even more impressive and showing off the contrast between the shadows and the highlights.
Love that this was taken on an iPhone, demonstrating that the best camera is the one you have on you, and creatively knows no bounds when you have the right tools. Nicely seen and processed, thank you for sharing.
