New Joiners - Landscapes #948

February 2026

The water lines through the ground provide good leading lines to the main focus of the image. The high contrast silhouettes of the people draw in the viewers attention. The dark trees on the hill help stop the attention from drifting up away into the blue sky. A good photo with a sense of place.

A wonderfully soft colour palette with a sweeping road that reaches out and draws the eye in. The slightly warmer tones, and brighter light of the mountain peak do a great job of focusing attention on the main subject. I like how the winding road leads the eye around and up the mountain to the pastel pink sky. A lovely wintery scene with a calm grandeur.

This looks like a great shot of a waterfall. The long exposure is spot on and creates a wonderful texture to the water. Especially against the black rocks and water. The composition looks good too. My only issue is the size of the file which doesn't allow me to appreciate the finer details. I also can't rank it higher as I cannot tell if the focus and quality are of a higher standard. Still a great shot, well done!

A well balanced composition with nice light. The focal point of the old stone building sits well amongst its surroundings. The grassy reeds and pool of water provide a good foreground interest. The tall tree provides a good counterweight for the building and connects the upper half of the frame with the foreground with its reflection.

A lovely sunny shot with a mirror finish reflection in the lake. The small amount of detail in the foreground help add depth to the rest of the photo. The highlights in the mountain are a little over exposed, but they are possibly recoverable with a RAW file. My other suggestion would be to straighten the horizon line slightly, as it is tilting slightly down to the right. You have a great eye for the interesting!

A gorgeous fiery sky and sunset. The bright highlight of the sun pulls the viewer deep into the frame, like a hypnotic eye peeking above the horizon. The reds and oranges stand out brilliantly against the soft blue of the sky and the greys of the clouds and landscape. A well exposed photo of an awe inspiring scene.

A great representation of the highlands. The deep blue sky peaking through the clouds works well with the earthy brown landscape. The slightly long exposure softens the water while still giving a sense of motion. Overall the scene feels well balanced, with plenty of detail for the eye to explore.

a beautiful panorama with gorgeous light. The sun is exposed well, providing enough brightness and glare to trigger the brain not to look directly at it. The edges of the image are well framed with the human structures. A mirror finish on the water makes it look like a second sky in the foreground. Well done!

A wonderful photo of parklands during the height of autumn colours. The oak tree fills the frame nicely and has its spreading lower branches taking up a similar portion as the grass in the foreground, balancing the upper and lower edges. The human figures provide a story element to the scene without pulling too much attention away from the main subject. Well done!

Finding beauty in the everyday occurrences. The city of Essaouira has so many visual details, from the markets to the buildings and their unique doors. Being able to capture a moment like this that still provides an essence of the location without all the usual landmarks is a great achievement. Well done!

A lovely day time view of the lake and rugged snow capped mountains. The exposure and details throughout the scene are all good. I have a couple of suggestions that could help this photos ranking in future contests. A subtle fix is the ever so slightly tilted horizon line, dipping down towards the right. The distant waterline can help visualise this. The other suggestion is to try a slightly tighter crop. By keeping the same aspect ration and pulling in the crop from the top middle of the frame, you'll reduce the excess blue sky by about half and give the image more balance.

There is a reason this view is photographed so much, it's just stunning. It is a view that benefits from careful attention to composition and weighting of the frame. Here the cliffs are equally spaced on either side of the valley with Half Dome nicely centred. A simple but effective photo. Well done!

A quiet and unassuming scene, that doesn't demand attention, but deserves it. This simple sunrise overlooking a quiet lakeside shore sets the backdrop for a cute deciduous tree, seemingly posing for the photographer. The tree is well positioned in the exact centre of the frame with the lush green grass balancing out the soft blue sky. I can picture a simplified version of this representing a flag of some proud peaceful nation.

A great example of visual story telling. The surfer in focus, backlit by glistening sunlight on the water, presents an image of vitality and happiness. While the surfer in the foreground, with the soft focus and seated pose, evokes a sense of introspection and calm. The whole scene shows how we humans interact with the coastline landscape for both fun and quiet reflection. The surfer in the foreground might also be wondering where all the waves went :)
