A great use of contrast to draw attention to your subject. The vivid earthy red of the train stands out as the central feature against the muted grey blue of the surrounding landscape. The snow capped mountains provide a majesty to the location, one that competes against the industrial human aspect. Well done!

This photo reminds me of Christina's World by Andrew Wyeth. With the main difference being the ratio of sky to land is reversed. The inclusion of so much sky here is helped by the band of cloud running almost parallel with the ground. It acts like a wall for the eye to bounce off, back down to the woman, gazing at the barn, which faces the sky, then back down to the woman. Nice work!

A chilly scene with delicate pastel colours of blues and pinks. The main subject of the tree has an almost symmetrical appeal, radiating icy tendrils out into the winter air. A glimpse of the suns influence dances across the distant horizon, its warmth subdued to pale pink shades rather than golden incandescence. Well done!

It's hard to resist a mirrorlike finish on a calm waters surface. Especially when it is reflecting a visually intriguing landscape. The line of golden yellow stands out against the dreary grey along the shoreline. A small building sits by the waters edge, seemingly leaning back and relaxing in the calm surrounds. A photo that promotes quiet reflection in the viewer. Nice work!

The lighting over the landscape gives it a wonderful golden tone. The low angle of the sun adds extra contrast and texture to the volcanoes. You have a good amount of pixels here that you'd be able to significantly crop this image down from the top centre to remove at least half the sky. This would allow the viewer to focus more on the landscape and maybe even spot what appears to be a small eruption. Still an awe inspiring view!

This image has a very painterly feel. The grass provides a detailed abstract background for the portrait like pose of the lion. The plumes of seed heads on the grass stems all curl to the right of the frame, the same direction as the lions gaze. What would be a great abstract landscape image is elevated by the presence of the life that inhabits it. Great shot!

A bright a dreamy scene. An image of a perfect day on the water is framed on all sides by nature. The leaves, shoreline and even the ducks hold the viewers eye within the photo while giving a discovered sense to the scene beyond. The calm lake on a sunny day is exposed just right. On the edge of over exposed, but not quite there. Making it even more inviting.

A beautiful black and white long exposure. The brightly lit cascade of silky water is well exposed, retaining plenty of highlight details, considering the lengthy exposure time. The shadowy rocks help build dimension in the scene, and the glossy waters surface adds yet more texture. A stretched out tranquil moment captured with professionalism.

Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘Landscapes’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Animals’.

This is one of those cases where there is a good photo within a photo. While the portrait orientation shows a little more of the foreground and clear blue sky, the centre of the frame holds all the interesting features and is compressed in this view. A landscape orientation crop through the centre will keep all the same representation of the landscape, while boosting the viewers interest. Then the viewer can see more detail in the train, the winding mountain path with its steady stream of people, and the scattering of rocks in the foreground.

A well composed scene with good contrast, colour and exposure level. I must admit I was in doubt about the inclusion of some much sky, as I do tend to see it as a distraction in many images. After spending more time with this photo I find that the open expanse of grey helps set the mood of the scene, as well as give the viewer a better understanding of how the fisherman would experience this landscape. A sea that almost blends into the sky, an edge of the world a short walk away along a rocky breakwater. Nice work!

You have a great eye to see a scene like this and capture it in a visually pleasing way. The red poppies stand out against the field of green, while the white daisy mirrors the position and likeness of the rising sun. The narrow depth of field helps the eye focus on details rather than getting lost in the chaos. Well done!

This is one of those cases where it looks like a really good photo, full of depth and contrast, with a bright glaring sun adding loads of intensity to the scene. Unfortunately, I can't rank it higher based on the resolution presented. I'd love to see it in future contests in a higher resolution so it can be appreciated for all it is worth.

The lines created by the tufts of grass and trails made by people and animals provides an array of leading lines that pull the viewer in to this expansive vista. The eye is drawn past the people to the distant mountains, bringing thoughts of fresh mountain air and long journeys. A photo that generates a longing for the outdoors and wide open spaces.

A well composed image with foreground interest, sweeping curves that lead the viewer around the scene, and a bright and vibrant exposure. The Earthly colours of green and blue dominate the scene, strong signals of life and energy. The distant mountains provide a good background to explore beyond the tiered fields. Well done!
