New Joiners - People #358

March 2021

This is a lovely intimate image of a group of people. The composition and arrangement of the heads is very clever and must have taken some time to get perfectly right. The expressions and gaze of each subject is perfect too.

Clever use of the multiple-exposure technique to create a sticking and creative portrait. The technique, which involves layering one image on another evokes fragments of emotion very effectively and in this instance was a good choice in realising the intent of the image creator.

A stoic, and biblical portrait that's packed with character. The composition is strong and dynamic while the light and colour pallet have all been handled extremely well. Ultimately, it is the connection with the subject that really makes this image.

People at work often make great subjects for portrait photography. This breakfast chef showing off his buffet is a good example. Handing mixed lighting in situations like this is a challenge and the photographer has done well to keep the ambient mood.

A bold and confident composition that's paid off. It takes nerves to crop half a head off in a portrait , but in this instance, the decision works well. The beautiful blur in the background adds depth and context while the strong eye contact creates a connection with the subject.

A beautiful image that captures the magic of an expression in an instant. There is a delightful playfulness in this portrait. The joy has been artfully snapped in a quick decisive moment. It takes skill to capture these fleeting moments of expression. The composition is excellent too. along with the use of black and white.

A wonderful expression has been captured in this portrait. The subject seems to be very content and at peace with the world. This is also emphasised by the calming positioning of the subject in the frame with lots of space to 'breath' and insightful use of lots of sky.

The sense of space and composition in this image is very effective. The large area of dark shadows is a bold and confident creative decision that provides a striking contrast to the richly textured wall and tow characters having a socially distanced chat. As a metaphor for the times we're living in this image works on many levels.

In the tradition of the diary-esque 'snapshot' style of photography, a wonderful sense of intimacy has been captured in this image. While the facemasks relate to the times we're living in, the affection between the characters transcends these barriers and shines through. Beautifully composed, well seen and captured,.

This portrait study is packed with character., It works well as black and white which emphasises the rich details of the subject's features. You really get a sense of contemplation, memory and thoughtfulness in this image, a sense that there are many stories behind this wonderful face.

An intriguing image that explores the harder aspects of life. The position of the lone figure in the frame, with a facemask, heavy shopping bag, and walking stick complement the concrete background, and sludgy snow. the use of black and white further emphasises the harshness of the scene.

In the tradition of some of the great documentary photographers such as Martin Parr this study of tourism in Eygpt works well. It also makes an interesting observation on the human obsession with the selfy. - which is another intriguing aspect of portrait photography.

The subtle, delicate handling of this image is very effective. The background of foliage is rich with detail and a visual feast for the eyes. The use of light and colour creates a sticking contrast to the pose and position of the subject. There is an unusual mixture of tension and calmness in this portrait.
