New Joiners - People #366

May 2021

Love the use of film and the spirit of experimentation. Great work. The colours are simply fabulous, the hues of greens and red complement each other perfectly. The use of a slow shutter to create some motion blur was inspired and adds a surreal, dreamlike element.

The composition of this image works very well. The main character is perfectly positioned and the subject's right arm creates a lovely triangle to the left of the image. this is nicely balanced by the basket he's carrying. The letters PPM on the far left create a wonderful counterbalance. and overall colour pallet is subdued but sublime.

The decisive moment in this lovely portrait has been skillfully observed and captured. The sense of space and design in the composition works extremely well and the photographer has done well to anticipate the space in which the scarf would blow.

An amazingly dynamic action shot that is simply bursting with energy, tension and danger. The position of the climber on the rock with the diagonal lines creates a strong composition which adds to the sense of tension. The overall image is enhanced by the harmonious colour pallet.

What an interesting portrait. Using a glass panel to photograph through was an inspired way to bring an expressionistic aspect to this image. Embracing the spirit of experimentation to stretch creative boundaries is a great thing and it's wonderful to see it in this image. The colours are sublime and the image is beautiful and disturbing in equal measure. A perfect combo!

Firstly you've done well to overcome the technical challenges of photographing in a small, poorly lit bathroom. But more importantly, you've created an admirable image of your mother. You've done well to capture the sense of empowerment and strength you wanted to portray. Good luck with the rest of your 14x14 project and a speedy recovery to your mother.

There is a wonderful sense of confidence and strength in this composition. Placing the subject in the middle of the frame along with the position of the arms adds to this sense. The light has been keenly observed too and has been controlled and captured skillfully.

This portrait explores the idea of personal space, a private place to relax and be at ease with oneself. This is totally evident in this subtle, and quietly spoken portrait. Through a cunning choice of camera angle, the subject, Hannah, still in her work clothes 'owns' this space. The echoes of purple throughout the image, add a poetic rhythm to the composition.

A lovely and keenly observed street shot of a wedding couple crossing the street. The effect of the paper overlay adds another dimension (almost literally) and this plays well in skewing the narrative and how the image is 'read'. Good work.

This powerful self-portrait is raw and challenging, it suggests an intense and intimate narrtaive. The subject's penetrating and thoughtful gaze, contrasted with the brutality of the stabled cut and atmospheric side lighting all add to the narrative. The very best of luck to you, sir!

There is an excellent use of light in this magnificent portrait. The keenly observed light helps accentuate the diagonal lines of the composition. The mono conversion and handling of the tones have been artfully done with just enough detail in the shadows to reveal the haunting mannequin in the background.

The crisp, clean lines, bold graphic shapes and a wonderfully restrained colour palette have all helped make this lovely fashion image. Additionally, the lighting has been well handled to bring a sense of drama and depth to the scene. Finally, the pose of the model is the icing on the cake.

This bold and confident portrait is packed with attitude. It just goes to show that if you see a potential portrait it doesn't hurt to ask - you may end up with a stunning shot like this. The quality of the black and white shines through and it's lovely to see someone using real film!

Incredible use of light and colour in this harmonious portrait. It is, however, the bold and confident composition that makes it such a successful image. Every element has been perfectly positioned to create a sense of balance, but also tension.
