Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘People’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘Animals’ and ‘Landscapes’.
The composition of this image works very well. The main character is perfectly positioned and the subject's right arm creates a lovely triangle to the left of the image. this is nicely balanced by the basket he's carrying. The letters PPM on the far left create a wonderful counterbalance. and overall colour pallet is subdued but sublime.
What an interesting portrait. Using a glass panel to photograph through was an inspired way to bring an expressionistic aspect to this image. Embracing the spirit of experimentation to stretch creative boundaries is a great thing and it's wonderful to see it in this image. The colours are sublime and the image is beautiful and disturbing in equal measure. A perfect combo!
Firstly you've done well to overcome the technical challenges of photographing in a small, poorly lit bathroom. But more importantly, you've created an admirable image of your mother. You've done well to capture the sense of empowerment and strength you wanted to portray. Good luck with the rest of your 14x14 project and a speedy recovery to your mother.
This portrait explores the idea of personal space, a private place to relax and be at ease with oneself. This is totally evident in this subtle, and quietly spoken portrait. Through a cunning choice of camera angle, the subject, Hannah, still in her work clothes 'owns' this space. The echoes of purple throughout the image, add a poetic rhythm to the composition.

There is an excellent use of light in this magnificent portrait. The keenly observed light helps accentuate the diagonal lines of the composition. The mono conversion and handling of the tones have been artfully done with just enough detail in the shadows to reveal the haunting mannequin in the background.
