New Joiners - People #370

June 2021

A lovely quiet and contemplative portrait. The photographer has done well to see and quickly capture this scene without losing the tranquillity of the moment. The use of natural light is excellent and has been well handled as flash or other artificial light would have ruined the atmosphere.

A bold and confident composition. The central positioning of the subject and direct eye contact reinforce this confidence. The strong backlight works well and creates a real sense of depth. The tones have been artfully handled and the cool, muted colour palette adds to the vibe.

A nicely observed and captured moment. The use of the door as a framing device and the positioning of the subject works well and invites the viewer to join the subject and contemplate the magnificent view through the doorway. Tricky, high contrast lighting has been well handled. Good work.

An interesting and accompanied portrait. There's an engaging, yet distant connection with the subject. Focusing on the ring works well and the positioning of the hand gives the composition a dynamic twist. The bright light spilling into the frame adds to the depth and energy of the image.

There is a lovely energy to this striking portrait, in part suggested by the sense of movement, but also by the slightly unconventional framing with the subject looking out of the frame. This works really well and suggests a narrative beyond the frame.

This is a really accomplished documentary image. The positioning of the firefighters to the two yellow street signs and the flaming windows have been perfectly positioned. and add a sense of rhythm and harmony to the composition. Nicely seen and captured, well done!

This image is packed with attitude and confidence. The pose, expression and positioning of the subject is powerful, assertive, and cool. Set in a new topographic-esque landscape the arid semi-industrial geography, complete with pylons and cables adds to the vibe. The black and white treatment is pitch-perfect.

There is a lovely use of natural light in this image. The 'knowing' gaze of the subject, half-hidden in shadow creates a strong and engaging connection. The mug, adds to the narrative and provides a real-life context. The colour palette has a film-like vibe and creates mood.

This sheep shearer at work is a great subject. The wide-angle view, which includes much of the working environment helps set the scene and creates a rich atmosphere. The natural light has been skillfully capturing revealing detail where needed without killing the atmosphere. The sheep looking at the camera in the background is the icing on the cake.

There's a lovely sense of rhythm running through the line of characters in this composition with the two figures on the left acting as a strong and engaging focal point. The relatively high contrast black and white processing works well and emphasises the sense of pace.

This simple and elegant landscape has been artfully captured. The fisherman at work add human presence and also create a strong focal point. The subtle layering and use of lines in the landscape help create a sense of depth. Converting to black and white was a good decision and it suits the subject.

The use of a wide aperture has created a lovely depth of field with wonderful bokeh in the background. This helps separate the subject from the background which would have otherwise been quite confusing visually. The direct eye contact and positioning of the subject in the frame makes an engaging connection.

There's a rich, delicate structure to this image. At first, it felt haunting with a hint of menace, but on reflection, the dark tonality and lovely use of shadows on the wall speak to a more harmonious, delicate and 'zen'-like tranquillity.

The use of the car wing mirror is very clever in this beautifully observed street scene. The engagement with the subject is just right while the scene unravelling in the car's mirror adds another dimension to the narrative. Lovely colour palette too.

Excellent use of a low angle viewpoint to add a sense of drama and tension to this scene. The photographer has also done well to use the tree as framing devices adding context and energy to the composition. The thoughtful pose and gaze of the subject enhances the story.
