There's a slightly creepy vibe to this image, but I love it. It is loaded with mystery and menace. I particularly like the tree stump on the right of the frame which feels like a monster waiting to pounce. The sticks and leaves in the left foreground of the frame are perhaps a little distractiong. Otherwise, a cracking image.
Chopping a head in half requires a steady 'compositional' nerve, but done well it can elevate a relatively straightforward 'headshot into a portrait that is loaded with meaning and character. The little shaft of natural light on the subject's nose (presumably from the light passing through the olive leaves) adds a nice touch.
The bold, confident and graphic shapes work well in this unusual, but striking image. The 'crispness' of the black and white conversion has been perfectly handled. However, it's the implied narrative that I find most interesting - what exactly is happening and do the words on the tattooed arm add nuance and meaning?
A beautiful and quietly spoken portrait. I love the smallness of the subject in the frame and the fact that he has his back to the camera, adding to the narrative. The exquisite composition works a treat with leading lines taking the viewer's eye straight to the central subject. The subtle colour palette with autumnal hues is lovely too.
