There's a slightly creepy vibe to this image, but I love it. It is loaded with mystery and menace. I particularly like the tree stump on the right of the frame which feels like a monster waiting to pounce. The sticks and leaves in the left foreground of the frame are perhaps a little distractiong. Otherwise, a cracking image.

The sliver of human presence in this dynamic urban landscape is just enough to elevate the photo into an image that tells a story, I'm not sure what story, but that doesn't matter, it sows the seed and that's what's interesting. Good work.

The stark white walls and floors create a wonderful tableau for the dynamic arrangement of human beings. I like the way the image stimulates thoughts about what is it to be human, our collective conciseness and individual spirit. Nicely seen and captured.

Chopping a head in half requires a steady 'compositional' nerve, but done well it can elevate a relatively straightforward 'headshot into a portrait that is loaded with meaning and character. The little shaft of natural light on the subject's nose (presumably from the light passing through the olive leaves) adds a nice touch.

I like it when 'fashion' shoots happen in regular urban or domestic spaces, I think it makes them much more interesting. This image works well from that perspective but also in the photographer's angle of view which is strong and dynamic.

I like the sense of termination in the subject. The composition works well and I like the way the subject is the position in the bottom left with lots of 'room' for the arrow to fly into. I also like the way the wider view adds to the sense of place.

What a cracking action shot. Well done. Beautifully composed with a real sense of energy captured through the frozen-in-time water drops. It's unusual to see surf shots like this in black and white, but this really works well, with good detail in both the shadows and the highlights. Nice work!

The bold, confident and graphic shapes work well in this unusual, but striking image. The 'crispness' of the black and white conversion has been perfectly handled. However, it's the implied narrative that I find most interesting - what exactly is happening and do the words on the tattooed arm add nuance and meaning?

Photographing people at work is a wonderful way to make engaging and interesting portraits, especially in the context of travel photography. The lovely, rich, vibrant colours exude a sense of travel and adventure. while the composition is solid and confident.

I love this image, such clever use of reflections. and so nicely seen. It's not just the reflections though, the timing is great with the two figures occupying the centre of the image. The symmetry off their white shirts and shoes. is the icing on the cake.

A beautiful and quietly spoken portrait. I love the smallness of the subject in the frame and the fact that he has his back to the camera, adding to the narrative. The exquisite composition works a treat with leading lines taking the viewer's eye straight to the central subject. The subtle colour palette with autumnal hues is lovely too.

Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘Animals’ and ‘Landscapes’.

A clever image that just goes to show how a creative mind can improvise with limited resources. I really love the layers and sense of depth that water drops have created. The lighting and limited colour palette also add nuance and depth. Nicely done!

The silhouette is a lovely way to evoke mood and atmosphere. In this image, it works very way revealing the fisherman against the setting sun. Creating this atmosphere and shooting into the light (contre jour) can be complicated, so kudos for nailing it.

What a lovely, and poetic image. The clever use of layering through the reflection works really well and ensures that the image can be read and interpreted in many ways. The gritty grain and subdue colour palette add to the historic vibe.
