New Joiners - People #385

September 2021

Crowd and
Expert winner

I have chosen this picture as the winning image for a number of reasons. The intense gaze of the person draws you in, there is such concentration in this captured moment. The natural light is wonderful, illuminating one side of the face and revealing those beautiful colours and tones and topped off with a strong composition, well done great portrait.

Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘People’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘Animals’ and ‘Landscapes’.

It's good to read a little about how you took this picture. It feels very empty, a bit sad maybe but that all adds to its strength and why I've selected it for the top ten. It looks like a challenging environment with those underpass lights and as a technical exercise you could bring those highlights down and increase the contrast overall to give it some extra vibrancy. Have a play in Lightroom if you have access to it, you can create great 'looks' to change the images feel. The composition is great, well done.

This captures an evening on the river well. Lots of different light to control, I like the tone of the sky.

Love this. It reminds me of Christopher Anderson's work (Magnum Photographer). The composition, light and tone all add to that brilliant moment you've captured.

I find this a really interesting shot. It reminds me of a film still, perhaps from a Hitchcock movie or of a similar time. The light on the face is fantastic and the colours throughout the image all add to that filmic look and feel.

You've made a good photographic connection here with your subject Roy and its good to read you become friends, photography can be so much more than just a picture. Aesthetically I really like the tone and grain of the film.
