There's a lot to love about this image. The composition is strong, particularly the clever use of vertical lines and the arrangement of shapes that help hold the image together. The subtle, low contrast 'faded' black and white conversion also adds to the vibe, while the quiet, contemplative expression of the subject is the icing on the cake.

Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘People’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘Animals’ and ‘Landscapes’.

This is a thought-provoking self-portrait. Self-portraits are tricky for a number of technical reasons, obviously, but they are also tricky if you want to reveal aspects of 'self' that might be hard to show. The 'raw' vibe of this portrait feels honest and unflinching.

There's a powerful and evocative feeling to this image, especially when seen in context with the title and caption. The gritty, grainy, high contrast black and white conversion helps evoke this, while the darkness of the background suggests a sense of isolation echoed in the subject's eyes. A thought-provoking image.

A slick and professional-looking image that's been well executed. The low angle of view and engagement with the model creates a powerful connection. The near monochromatic (but not quite) processing of the image has been artfully handled. Top-notch work, well done.

Wow, here's an image that packs some attitude. The facial expression and body language of tightly folded arms seen in the subject are priceless. I also love the square composition and the echoes of blue darting around the frame. Great shot!!

The subtle, atmospheric lighting in this image has been beautifully handled. I love the way the fabric integrates with the foliage in the background. The model's pose and expression have a quiet air melancholy that seems appropriate to the setting.

A lovely heartwarming portrait set against a wild Asklakan backdrop. The use of light is what really makes this image shine though. Shooting into the sun (contre jour) can be quite a challenge, it's hard to do well, but if you can pull it off the results can be sublime, as seen here. Well done.

This is an evocative portrait that feels loaded with narrative and meaning. The title and caption emphasise this and help add even more layers of depth and meaning. The composition, lighting, and 'direction' of the model all add to the story. Nicely done.

A nicely arranged, simple but effective composition with lovely seductive colours. Reviewing this image just as the clocks have gone back and it's cold, grey and damp outside (in the UK) gives the image an aspirational twist, I wish I was there right now!

Integrating the landscape and including a wide view helps emphasise the remoteness of the location and the mysterious connection we can have with the land, through ritual, myth legend and folklore. The low hanging cloud suits the subject perfectly adding mood and atmosphere.

I really love this image and would have liked to have had it in the top ten, however, the artefacts (perhaps the result of over-processing a small file) are just too evident. That said the bold composition and graphic elements, the hard high contrast mono conversions reveal the right instinct and a good eye!

Wonderful, crisp, sharp and clean image. The black and white tones have been artfully handled. I love the overall composition and the way the child is integrated into the topography. The little white rooftop just visible to the right of the main rock adds a subtle counterbalance to the dominance of organic shapes.

This is a powerful image that is loaded with meaning, There are not many clues in the title, but there is enough information in the image to allude to a sense of darkness - the broken window, the figure hidden in shadow and so on. I'm intrigued to know more...
