February 2022

The contrast in colour and vibrancy between the dress and the location work really well, your subject really stands out. You've given a good colour treatment too, although maybe a little too much vignette but that's just a personal preference! Great composition, we hope you keep submitting your portraits!

I like the make up of this image, it places us in the scene well with the artist tools. The light on the artists face and the back of his head is fantastic but it would be good to see more of what he is doing. Moving round to the right a little to reveal more of him and experimenting with depth of field to isolate your subject could also be tried in such a situation if your lens allows. You clearly have an eye for good light, we hope to see more of your pics in the future!

The light is stunning in this portrait and the whole shot feels very well considered. Compositionally I love the man to the left of frame giving space for the backlit smoke to drift through the black abyss. The Black & White treatment you've given further adds to its strength to create a timeless picture.

I love the light shining on the woman's Bindi and the subtle highlights on her cheeks. The composition is a brave one, it's often a challenge to make such a crop successful. However I think this works well, the soft focused background helps to further strengthen the shot.

I like the studio set up you've created and really like the soft painterly lighting you have used to bring it all to life. The Phase One does give incredible detail and colour rendition. Feels like an advertising shot for a fragrance perhaps! Nicely done.

Street photography at night can be very rewarding. What I like about this picture is the way you have used the architectural lighting behind your subjects. It's quite a prominent feature. It's hard to shoot people, perhaps even harder at night when there are groups of people around, who wouldn't find that a tough situation?! Perhaps the lighting could be a new focus and you use single figures in the night. Have a look at Filipe Pinhas on instagram, he may help you find some inspiration for the night... Best of luck.

This has all of the elements that make up a successful portrait shot and it really stands out. Their strong gaze away from the camera to the same point is very engaging. I love the light that focuses on them both and the subdued colour palette you've worked with enabling the red from the grandfathers hat and the blanket to stand out. Top entry to the competition illustrating a clever environmental portrait, well done.

Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘Animals’ and ‘Landscapes’.

It's interesting to see this traditional way of life being portrayed. I see you've cropped the image but I'd love to see more around the subject revealing the landscape and allowing the viewer to see the whole environment. Great detail in the image and it works well in B & W.

There are so many great elements to this shot, the amazing sky, the wonderful walkway they are heading towards that reveals the farm. I would be very tempted if I was visiting again to try another shot with your auntie & uncle further up and facing camera to reveal the owners of the farm. It's such a great location, thanks for submitting and if you try that shot please submit to another competition!

What an amazing dress, the jump has created a great shape. Compositionally it could be helped with a little crop, I'd be tempted to crop out the shadow at the bottom and give it a little turn to straighten up. Perhaps it was a self portrait?! Difficult to do if so, a little more head room by tilting up would also help. Great shot to enter!

Amazing landscape shot, I'd love to know where it is! It has a strong composition with the two characters to the left of frame playing out the rule of thirds. As a people shot I like the idea that they aren't the main focus of the shot letting the viewer absorb more about the place.

Wow, being a father I know how hard it is to get a child to concentrate on your lens for any length of time! This is a lovely child portrait with good composition and aperture choice blowing out those lights in the background. Great entry!

I think you've managed to make a success of a tricky technique. For me that's down to the two very different expressions you've captured from the artists performance. I think I'd be tempted to try cropping it to a square format to remove the dead space on the right. I think this would strengthen the shot bringing her into centre of frame.

You really have put the viewer in the picture! I'm instantly reminded of the street work of Dougie Wallace (Glasweegee) Look him up if you've not heard of him! This has a very similar raw approach to it (a good thing) Great shot and we hope to see more!

A candid shot indeed. I really like the lighting, it compliments the mood of the shot very well. The sweat on his forehead is a great detail that creates a slight intense feel to the shot. Reminiscent of a film still, it's a great shot.
