Sometimes we see a photographic opportunity revealing itself to us. We may have a few seconds or less to decide how to take it and set our camera up. Often we don't get so lucky. This is a perfect example of getting it right. The family come towards the photography wearing their stripy prison outfits and the timing is spot on as the cross the road painted in white stripes to echo what they are wearing. The decisive moment played out for us to see. A classic.
This image is full of energy and filled with fun. It's beautifully captured and our eye is taken on a visual journey from the cart-wheeling child in the foreground to the two girls watching on and beyond. There is so much to look at that we feel maybe as dizzy as the girls in the picture. The light is very well controlled and the use of contrast with the harsh sunlight works very well in producing an effective graphic quality to the picture. the movement works well and the low angle allows us the viewer to be part of the seen. A great photograph and worthy winner.
The quality of the light on the young girls face really brings out the lovely colour in her eye. This is elevated by the fact that her hand is obscuring her other eye so all the attention is drawn onto the one we can see as she sees us back. The overall brown colour palate really helps the blue of the eye pop and gives a real sense of focus to the viewer. Going in tight to crop also helps with how we respond to this charming picture.
This reminds me of a picture that could have been taken several years ago. It's like a polaroid with its colours which I think is a good thing. I love the low angle the photographer has used to give us a sense of space and highlight the 2 girls. The pink of their outfits works so well against the whitened blue of the sky as does the narrowing of the horizon line and the van parked between the girls. Wearing the masks also acts as a time frame to when the image could have been taken. Overall a very strong image that has been elevated by the skill of the photographer.
Mimicking is a form of flattery. This is wonderful by the photographer to capture this lovely warm moment when the girl responds to the painting on the wall behind her. This photograph is all about the joys of childhood and how we as photographers capture it. This has been done to a very high level. Its a warm and charming picture that makes me smile.
This is a great example of background and main subject working really well together and complementing each other. The landscape gives us a sense of space and isolation which works so well against the powerful presence of the young person presented to us in a demon mask and that red outfit just bursts off the screen. The overall feel is in keeping with what we see. There is a sense of mystery about this photograph and many good images do that - They make us the audience work to get our answers. Well done.
Lots of fun images within the top 10 and this fits perfectly in. We have the sense of fun from the scene, the wonderful expression on the boys face as he try's to not get splashed from the water from the hose, His overall mid air capture really adds to the power of the composition and the dark background means our attention stays on the main subject which is great. A lovely warm and for the little boy slightly wet image. Lovely.
The movement, the quality of light falling on the subjects either oblivious to the camera or happily disregarding the presence works very well. We the viewer feel we have front row seats to witness what is happening. I want to join in. This could be staged or it could be a chance encounter - It does not matter. What is important is that the photographer has captured the spirit of youth and a sense of joy and freedom. Wonderful.
This is such a fun photograph. The girls expression as she discovers what is happening is wonderful and where the photographer has been very clever is giving us the viewer a glimpse of her audience watching on reflected in the globe. This picture is also about timing and the photographer has captured the moment just at the right time. A lovely image that is also very clever.
The relationship between the two main subjects and the background works very well, With the whiteness of the horse dominating the frame the black background offers the space for us to enjoy the scene and relationship between the horse and the girl. This image works so well because we see the warm relationship between the two shine through. Placing the girls head below the horse also gives us a sense of scale which works very well. The tonality using B/W is also very striking just like the photograph itself.
The contrast in colours between the monochromatic background set against the deep lush colours of the boys clothes works so well and gives the image a real sense of drama. His stare into the camera is direct that it almost goes through our own gaze onto him. This is a strong portrait that makes it difficult to look away and that is testament to its power and the power of the young boy in the frame.
This is a heart warming story to go with a striking photograph. The boys pose and facial expression are lovely and friendly and also a little curious of the camera, the blurred background puts all the attention onto the main subject which elevates his position of importance within the frame. The use of B/W is a classic within the documentary genre which this image suitable fits into. Well done

I love the text that tell us the story about this photograph. Dad may not have wanted to be seen within the photograph but that adds power to this image and it now becomes a symbol of how we see our own family members and how they want to be photographed or not. The B/W fits in well with the moody sky and sense of quietness around the isolated figure. It's a lovely moment and I'm sure will become a family keepsake for the future.

Like a Rene Magritte painting that questions ideas around framing - This photograph does similar things. Frames within frames as our eye is taken to this striking central figure. Is she walking towards us or away from us? it is not at first glance obvious. We could read into the image different responses from which position she is turned. The dramatic B/W really adds additional drama as does the space the image was taken in. powerful.
