The colour's of the night really come alive with this street scene in Berlin. The neon lights on the advertising boards add that needed light for the background and main subject. The photographers position really allows us the viewers into the street and we feel with are actually there with the performer. The tone of the guitar is perfectly balanced with the graffiti on the walls and the case in the foreground gives the image depth. A gritty urban photograph.
Some photographs don't immediately reveal their true intentions and this is one of those pictures which we read differently as we keep on looking. On the surface I enjoy the formal picture making qualities of the image, the central figure and the quality of exposure in difficult circumstances. But the figure keeps bringing me back and I wonder why he is just sitting there. I will never know and that is why this image intrigues so much.
It would have been easy to wait a split second and place the figure in a central position but by not doing so the photographer gives us the viewer the full sense of space in which the person exists. We see the expanse of space just after we see the colour of the hat then the pose and gun over the shoulder. We are not given many clues within the photograph but it's an image that is both beautiful and haunting in equal measure. Stunning.
The black and white works so well in this image as we concentrate on the actual act of what is happening within the frame without the distraction of colour. The composition between the two is excellent and the fact that one has their hair up against the other with hair down works very well formally. The act of friendship and bonds are perfectly explored and seen within this picture. It is an image full of warmth that we do not need to see facial expressions to understand this relationship. Stunning.
The idea that this is a chance encounter only adds to the strange and quirky vibe that this photograph has. The added dimension of the night scene and neon overhead lamp adds to that feeling as does the space between the photographer and central subject within the frame. It would seem slightly odd without the mask. The mask just makes it even more of a surreal image. Its very well photographed and the urban space behind gives that extra cinematic quality to the whole photograph. Stranger Things indeed.
The contrast between the sharp elements of the unmovable station signs and platform work very well against the deliberate blur of the volume of people passing through the space. It is this juxtaposition between the two that really gives this image its quality. It gives us a sense of the pace of life within this area and the photographer has carefully documented with great skill this activity around themselves. A very strong technical image.
This is really a stunning photograph. The quality of light on the face and especially the hair really adds an extra dimension to the image. The collaboration between photographer and model is clearly evident as is the trust shown. The crop of the hood is excellent and really draws in the viewer and the bright blue background fits in very well against the main subject. The look away from camera is strong and this is a great example of a controlled photo-shoot.
The pose of the two children bonded together by an arm and the wonderful view behind them really gives a sense of the place that the photographer also inhabits within this frame. The out of focus background really adds to the drama even though we can see what it is. That is the beauty of this picture. We get to see what the children see and where they are going. Great capture.
As the leaves are now underfoot this photograph feels really appropriate for the time of year. The composition is very good and the monochromatic shades of brown work very well against the subjects hair. The expression on the girls face is lovely and her positioning within the frame is excellent and really draws us into the scene. This is a simple yet very effective image and one that keeps our attention for more than a few seconds. really lovely and a worthy winner.
This is a classic style of image. We have all seen this type of photograph but this has been elevated above most through thoughtful composition and wonderful technique. We would normally be admiring the ocean view but the photographer has been very clever and placed the subjects between a distant ship on the horizon line perfectly placed between them. We see them stare into not only only the water but into what their future holds. A lovely photograph.
The framing is key to the success of this image. We get to see the beautiful space behind the main subject - their back towards us. we see the persons arm raised framing the sun away from what they are viewing and we the audience have to guess what they see., Is it a wild animal roaming the area or is it the stunning vista the person is taking in. Add in the tribal nature of the spear and colourful top and we can imagine the sheer beauty of the wilderness the person first hand see. A dramatic image.

This is a lovely keepsake. A picture of a cherished family member. It has a lovely nostalgic feel about it. This is added through the muted but very well considered colour palate of the image, The wonderful depth of field really brings into sharp focus the expression on the child's face and his fun at discovering this boat. The camera angle really gets us close to the action and its a picture of pure joy. Lovely.
The bubble machine provides both us the viewer and the person within the picture a real sense of fun. The low camera angle adds additional drama and a sense of place within the framing and the stunning vivid colours add impact to the photograph. This is very well captured and technically strong. We see the drama unfold and the expression on the ladies face is of pure joy. Wish you were here. Fantastic.
This is a strong powerful and visually dynamic portrait that has been well controlled with the use of additional light. The low angle works very well as does the slight movement on the models arms as she walks through the blades of grass. The use of Black and White really adds to the dramatic effect and we get a sense of drama within the frame. Looking away from camera adds extra weight and power to the photograph. A lovely image that would look great on any wall or gallery.

This image is all about the photographer been present within the space and the scene. The closeness of the subjects really brings to life the fun and emotion of the event that we see. The colours are really beautiful as are the expressive faces on the ladies. We cant help but smile along with them. Our attention is drawn to the central figure then we move around the frame and as we do something else is revealed in each persons face. Wonderful.
