This is a great example of a delicate image. Getting the hammer in the correct place is not easy and the photographer has shown great timing and skill to do this so well. The light on the face and the hammer head works so well against the darker background. This is well judged with lots of detail within the shadow areas. We can feel the skill on show of the man and his practice. The low camera angle allows us to be present within the scene. A great capture. Well done.

A lovely and vibrant character portrait that oozes quality. The light on the lady's face is wonderful and the shallow depth of field works very well given how we move our eye around the image from the stare looking over our shoulder behind us to whom or what we will never know and the patterns from the top she wears to the leaves on the tree. The colors from the browns of the building to the bright greens and pops of pink outside keep our attention on this photograph for a long time. Lovely.

A classic studio portrait. Beautifully captured with very good detailing. The light on the models face, the even lighting in the background, which is not easy to do, the balance of color between what the model wears and the colorama backdrop works very well. Add in the make up which is professionally applied and a great rapport between model and photographer and we get this wonderful staged photograph. Very well done.

Great light and wonderful timing getting all the elements in the right place before taking the image. Everything is in two's. The men walking at a pace, the two trees behind and the two main church spires behind that. The light on the mens faces is perfect and the gesturing of the man talking to his friend really gives us a sense of the conversation taking place between them. So much information in maybe a 125th of a second. The power of photography and a great candid photograph.

The light on the face works beautifully against the blocks of colour surrounding her and the juxtaposition between the main figure and the young woman behind works so well in giving the photograph balance. The shallow depth of field means we the audience focus straight on the womans gaze and we are happy to return it back. This is a great example of seeing potential within a crowd. It's much harder to make it work so well. Congratulations to the photographer.

This could easily have been my top pick. The composition and crop really bring all the attention to the 3 people within the frame. The exposure is spot on and the warmth which glows from the smiles on the faces really does embrace the moment. This is a beautiful family portrait in a the style to Nicholas Nixon's famous The Brown Sisters project. A perfect moment captured for what i'm sure was a wonderful day. Lovely.

This is a clever photograph on many levels. The wonderful juxtaposition between the foreground rocks, the person careful not to lose their balance on the slippery rocks and the lighthouse perfectly positioned in the right hand side of the frame. The muted colors add the drama to this photograph and the saturated tonality works very well overall giving that sense of uneasiness within the frame. Brooding and dark. A photograph that has been made rather than just taken. Well done.

The two elements that all great photographs need and photographers have to be looking out for are quality of light and composition. A strong subject matter is a massive plus point as well. This dynamic image has all these elements and more. The exposure is perfect which given the tricky lighting conditions is not an easy thing to do. The light going across the image seperates the 3 individuals passing through the scene and the use of black and white gives this photograph a strong graphic appeal. Beautifully judged and the people are placed beuatifully within the frame. A classic and worthy winner.

So lovely and unexpected these days to see someone actually write rather than text into a phone or computer. We will never know what the woman in the photograph is writing and that only adds to the suspence within the picture. The muted colors work well as does the foggy grey backgound outside of the window. The composition capturing the lady writing is wonderful, looking onto the words already written with the pen held beautifully in the hand. Great technique just add to a well seen candid portrait.

I love the details within this image. The patterns of the cobbles on the street, the shutters on the window frames and the wonderful concentration on the boys face in what he is doing - looks like he is trying to thread his fishing line through the holes within the rod. I wonder what bait he has within the bucket he clutches close to him. Live bait? Why i really love this image is because of what it also represents. I can imagine this image means alot to mabye his father who took the photo? or took him fishing. I can see in the future the young man in the photograph showing this image to his children as he takes them fishing. Such is the power of photography, meaning and memory. Charming.

This is a photograph that depicts pure joy and happiness in a special moment in time for these yung people. The warm light against the oranges and reds work so well as does the ability by the photographer to render the spraws of water sharp against the glistening and gleeming light. Beautifully exposed and captured. Pure joy in the sun.

Great composition and attention to detail in the entire photograph. The two ladies standing proud in the foreground looking out into the distance, the man behind slightly out of focus so not to draw our attention to far from the main area of focus works well and mirrors the pose of the lady and her axe. The grey backgound gives a sense of space and works well against the colourful outfits the people wear in the frame. The close crop of the camera frame brings all this detail to us. A powerful portrait of unfamilar traditions.

This is such an amazing photograph. The expressions on all the chefs seems to be staged. They look like actors performing to look a certain way. It reminds me of Ormond Gigli's iconic Girls in the Windows fashion photograph made in New York in 1960. The composition is spot on with the empty window frames taking our eye to the bottom right corner. The exposure is excellent and we see all the tiny details of the expressions and clothes so clearly. It is like looking into a dolls house. So perfectly put together. Very well done.

A classic example of a simple yet stunning portrait. Well exposed and constructed from the close up head shot, choosing the right darker background so the sitter stands out and then adding a pop of color and interest in the floral arranegements within the hair. This is a very effective portrait that does exactly what the photographer set out to do. Well done.
