New Joiners - People #459

May 2023

I’ve chosen this image to review to further commend your use of layers and balance of light in this portrait as a landscape. There is so much detail in this, but it doesn’t overcrowd the warm look of the image.

The ‘mobile phone’ generation - or Gen Z! I'm always looking for alternative approaches to documentary photography, and you have delivered that with this entry. A wide frame offers more to the narrative here, both the generational aspect and making a time stamp too.

Sakura Love, this is indeed a beautiful photo both with narrative and location. You've captured the iconic cherry tree season, which adds to the romance of this scene. It's a major talent to capture couples in natural posing with an aesthetic like this. Well done!

I’m drawn to this image as there are so many visual references here to traditional photography. A major reference is the classic, W. Eugene Smith's 'Walk to Paradise Garden' with the vignette and negative space too. I suggest you to shoot on film in the future!

I’ve chosen this image to review to further commend your use of retouching with this portrait. By reducing the clarity and texture, you have achieved the flawless portraiture edit. I feel there is more to push with the contrasts, however, start with the eye detail and see the results!

I like the angle taken here, it feels such an off kilter approach to street photography that creates a directional view to your main subjects. This does fall into tourism photography with the inclusion of the London guide book, Great shot!

Congratulations! Portrait of man from Rajasthan, this portrait immediately caught my eye. The detail you have captured immense at an aperture of F.4, this is a skill you've mastered well and should continue to pursue in your portraits. Good job!

I really love how warming this portrait is, and the narrative is strong here, however I appreciate the inclusion of the story behind this image. This is a tremendous entry, especially showing great skills in managing the dominating sunset with little lens flare.

In the arm of nature, thank you for including much detail behind your entry. I'm glad this challenged your thinking towards this narrative. As a photographer, you must think about your lone subject and how your presence is portrayed with your subject matter.

Dark side of Rima - Steampunk offers a very creative approach to portrait photography, and you have referenced this well with your approach to your model and lighting choice. I believe you could use more theatrics by using a speed light in an additional spot.

I want to emphasise this image with its clever use of aperture. Your control and adaption to the environment has been a success here. With a clear separation of foreground and background, this is a good example of this technique! Well done.

I appreciate the angle taken here, it feels such a natural approach to portrait photography and creates a strong narrative about girlhood. I feel what is most successful is your choice of frame and cropping here, keep applying and testing this type of frame.

I want to highly credit this portrait for its studio efforts. I can see your visual referencing with this classic studio lighting approach, and it's very successful. Furthermore, your post edits are consistent and work very well for this submission!

Father and Son Racers - this is a family portrait at its greatest. I much prefer family style photography to be approached in its most natural environment. You've cleverly respected their conversation and maintained a good distance, try an ISO of 400 next time.

I wanted to highlight this portrait and offer a suggestion of framing here. This portrait would've been stronger if you captured your subject with a clear space around their head, however the environment does link well with your narrative. Try a flash next time to match the ambient light.
