New Joiners - People #485

November 2023

Congratulations! This landscape portrait immediately caught my eye. The colour grading is great. This image is so well framed, especially isolating your subject and including the prominent white grass paint stripe, reminding us all how joyful this sport is. Well done!

I'm so impressed that this was captured on an iPhone and thank you for including all the technical details behind this image. The colour tones of pastels and grey are well suited here and you've measured the foreground and back succesfully!

Phoebe in the Bathroom, I'm really interested in this image with the suggestive narrative of mirror use and central framing. I feel this was taken on 35 mm film or emulated a film grade in post? Either approach is succesful, I recomend you look at Nan Goldins work too.

Congratulations! I found your image very reminiscent of girl culture, your model is adorning classic euphoria style make - up with the iconic glitter application. Why this references girl culture is how you’ve framed your model with no focal point, we as the audience are encased in the narrative. Please research Petra Collins and Rookie magazine! Well done!

I want to highly credit this portrait for its studio efforts, the styling here with your model, really suits this direction of lighting. Great tonals’ too, I'd suggest using a diffused soft box as your main light source for a future shoot!

This portrait has so many theatrical references with lighting, styling and pose, framing here is a powerful to use for a portrait with your main subject being central here. I’m certain it draws any viewer in to it. Keep documenting in this style!

I appreciate the angle taken here, you have many points of interest in this landscape portrait and I favour the off symetry because you have a strong seperation with the foreground and background. I would suggest editing out the leaf and stick for a stronger statement.

Thank you for entering this contest! I wanted to commend and further review your portrait for it's lighting and technical approach. You have measured the lighting incredibly well with your model, fully embracing the sunset and no over exposure here. Congrats!

I’m drawn to this image as the main narrative is not captured, we are focused on perhaps the the female presenting silhouette walking away from our view. We as an audience are involved, but not directly, with this relationship in the space. Clever suggestive narrative!

Sunday Best - I was first drawn to the square cropping here and black & white application. The subject matter and upfront approach with direct eye contact from one of your sitters is powerful and drives this narrative of cross generation.

Thank you for submitting this portrait and expressing your lighting direction, this is great as a test and I encourage you to continue with this approach. Practise high key and low key lighting depending on how many light heads you have too!

I’ve chosen this image to review to further commend your use of layers and balance of light in this portrait as a landscape. There is so much detail in this, but it doesn’t overcrowd the overall purpose of the image.

Existential - This is a very statement filled narrative here, lone on a perfectly curven hill top. I'm really impressed by the ambient light only filling part of the hill. I'd suggest using a lower aperture and ISO for a more dramatic shot.

Fun portrait that focuses on both stillness and movement, you’ve captured your model at a good angle where they are recognisable in a wave of motion blur within conversation. For a future shoot, I would propose shooting this style on black & white film the quality would be incredible.

I love the cinematic value this portrait shows, everything in motion fits really well in this. I’d suggest editing the contrast of the sky slightly darker and the sand brighter to balance this all out. Well done for capturing this moment, especially at a low angle.
