New Joiners - People #487

December 2023

I’ve chosen this image to review to further commend your use of layers and balance of light in this portrait as a landscape. There is so much narrative in this, but it doesn’t overcrowd the overall purpose of the image. The central point really connects the view to the portrait, it gives an openness to the visuals.

Well done! I'm always impressed when there is a strong image captured on an iPhone 13. I want to highly credit this portrait for its framing efforts. Your subject, and location, really suits this direction of lighting. Great tonals’ too.

A bustling Borough Market - It's wonderful to read that you bring your camera with you at all times. This is key in street photography, and you have captured a great scene here, with numerous narratives shown in good focus.

Congratulations! This is an incredible photograph entry. I love the cinematic value this landscape shows. Crisp detail on your main subject featured with a clear separation between the foreground and back. I'd suggest shooting at a lower ISO with an additional flash. Well done!

Thank you for entering this contest! This is a lovely entry, a great capture for your client, and an alternative way to capture formal gowns. I really like the inclusion of the grass, it reflects on the youth narrative well.

I like the tones used here, and thank you for mentioning the production details behind this portrait. I read that this was shot with a low aperture, this would've been key here to the detail captured. You’ve balanced the lighting so well also.

Really fun portrait that focuses on both humour and documentary, you’ve captured your subject's at a good angle where their faces are not seen. This encourages the humour tone very well, and including the roadside location helps with the narrative too.

Viva Fiesta - Congratulations! I'm always looking for alternative approaches to crowd photography, and you have delivered that with this entry. A wide frame offers more to the narrative here, and the colour tones have so many film aesthetics here. Very well done!

Desolation - This is a sweet portrait and interesting framing. You've captured a moment which feels special, and the contrast in hand poses adds an extra detail. I'd suggest editing out the detail in the background to bring more attention to the subject.

Time standing still - This is a great entry, framed well and has good creative input with the capture of the reflection in the puddle. Technical points here are a success, lighting is equal across the entire image and in focus.

On a Journey - Thank you for submitting this photo, great subjects captured and colour tones with the landscape and striking orange. I really like the perspective here and capturing the enormity of the mountain scape. Congrats, keep up this style also!

This portrait immediately caught my eye, especially with your lighting direction and detail on your subject's eye line. I'd suggest editing your frame by cropping further in to strengthen this portrait. This has potential with more practice, look up Mert & Marcus for references!

I'm happy to see more 35 mm film entries here, and this is a success. The lighting is really fun and offers a natural vignette effect around your subject, yet still taking in the detail of your location, which also suits this aesthetic.
