New Joiners - People #490

January 2024

This image is so reminiscent of fashion editorials, it certainly the beginning of a test shoot which will lead onto something great. I’d suggest recapturing this on 35 mm film to further your creativity and to research 90s fashion photographer, Jürgen Teller!

All the way - This certainly is a heart warming scene you have captured, you have a talent for street portraiture indeed. This would make an excellent series, and I suggest you capture more moments like this on 35 mm colour Kodak film. Your colour use here will match that.

Woman resting on a rock - I like the cinematic value this portrait shows, an onlookers view which builds narrative. I’m pleased you used 35 mm, I suggest you to continue this use and try a lower ISO for less grain texture.

I commend your creative approach for the result of this image. Well done, it’s very theatrical and could be experimented further with several other close up frames and crops. I'd suggest using an external flash to achieve more detail for your next capture.

Old wise man smoking pipe - The detail throughout this portrait is immense! Well done. You’ve balanced the lighting so well that it doesn’t over expose your model's features, and the main emphasis of the narrative of the wisdom of your subject and passing of time.

Traffic passengers - When reading your technical challenges, you expressed it was the ' low light ', I feel this is a major success and defines your lighting balance well from the reds to highlights of your model's hand. Well done!

Really fun portrait that focuses on both stillness and movement, you’ve captured your model at a good angle where her face is in focus and recognisable in a wave of motion blur. Great use of experimental lighting, try this in a studio environment also!

Thank you for submitting this photo to this contest, great layering captured and grey tones with the shadows I can see the creative direction, and it shows well here. Introducing a speed light flash next time will add more dramatics to your portrait too.

Just a man and his squirrel. - I want to emphasise this image for your skills in aperture and focal point control. Also, setting your shutter speed at a high rate gave you a successful result! Continue practising these skills!

This is a sweet portrait and great framing. You've captured a moment which feels special, and the contrast in hand poses adds an extra detail not many would pick up. Your aperture use is very impressive given how much detail you have gained!

Friday - I want to commend you further with your experimental use of 35 mm. film portraiture, It's a youthful portrait documenting a special phase, keep capturing moments like this, and it will expand your technical approaches with film use.

Grandma - This is a majestic portrait with great scenery too. This has a hyperreal look overall, which lends itself into a cinematic universe too. I would continue this approach and create an editorial series with your Grandma as the subject!

This is a sweet scene that you have captured, and thank you for including the context behind this shot. The main success I see is the balance of light - both the reflection of the torch and the deep contrast. Well done!

Thank you for submitting this photo to this contest, great subject captured and colour tones with the landscape and striking orange sail in the horizon. Great landscape and detail here, I'd suggest editing more contrast for more depth with the ripples and clouds.
