New Joiners - People #493

January 2024

I’ve chosen this image to review to further commend your use of layers and balance of light in this landscape. There is so much detail in this, but it doesn’t distract the overall purpose of the image. I feel you have made a central point between where the foreground meets the back, through your position being so central within the location. Great use of techniques here, especially measuring your depth of field!

Mommas Eye - I really love how delicate this portrait and the sense of calm it brings to the eye. This is a tremendous entry, you’ve balanced the lighting so well that it doesn’t over expose your model's features. Keep practising this approach and framing style, this is a common look within beauty editorials and style can contribute to a portfolio in the future!

Resonance - This portrait has so many narrative references with lighting, styling and pose. With these factors considered, your eye contact makes this entry strong and makes the connection between with audience read well. I commend you on the emphasis of negative space and minimal prop use within your framing. Well done!

This portrait has so many theatrical references with lighting, styling and pose. Thank you for including your technical details, this helps me on how we can possibly push this image further. I'd suggest using a longer shutter speed to maximise on this set up, captured with a tripod too for stability. This aesthetic has major potential!

A Reflection into the Soul - This is a great title for a portrait with strong creative direction and narrative. I feel the division between reflection and mirror are clear, especially as it's so central. The eye contact from your model is prominent to the lens, making a stern connection to the viewer, brilliant!

Wandering shadow - Congratulations! This portrait instantly caught my eye, the symmetry is so well captured, and you have directed the balance of light to curve around yourself dramatically. Beyond the human figure, you’ve invited movement into this work to extend the use of negative space, continue with this approach with self portraiture. Well done!

The Spark - This is an excellent entry, a strong portrait with really clever framing. I'm really happy you captured the majority of the sparks with your subject, this is what makes your portrait a success, not only that but the environmental detail too. This all makes up for an industrial-strength narrative! Excellent colour grading too.

Thank you for submitting this photo to this contest! Great aperture use with detail of the ripples in the lake. What drew me to this is your framing and cropping decision. With a tight frame, it creates more focus on your subjects, and separation between the foreground and back is successful here too.

I want to commend this portrait further for its creative efforts, the prop usage here, with your subject, really suits this direction of lighting with the dramatic narrative. With the placement being further from the lens, it is evident where it highlights your models’ features, unveiling little detail and keeping a sense of mystery. Great tonals’ also, a warm glow is really successful here.

Well done! This landscape portrait immediately caught my attention as the narrative is so well portrayed. This image is framed with many cinematic references, especially the clothing details. The strong eye contact towards something beyond the frame, makes us as, the audience, conjure up possible narratives here. This could make a strong photo series about girlhood, see the work by Megan Doherty and her use of street lighting within her portraits.

I want to emphasise this image, for your lighting skills here, as it's strong and well-balanced well against your model. To further this, shooting during sunset is really lovely for portraits and to be back lit gives a great effect. This is a skill adapted by yourself which is good for natural capturing, continue developing these skills!

The Lone Giant - This is a great landscape / portrait with a strong fantasy narrative connected to it, especially with your distance between yourself and the looming tree creating such dimension with your subject. The colour grade and tonal add to this, particularly with the soft gradient throughout. Research the photographer, Gregory Crewdson for future inspiration, this lends its self into dream like narratives.

This is a sweet portrait and with classic portrait framing. You've captured a moment which feels special, and the separation of lighting was a great decision here, especially as it lifts the background, gives depth with the shoulder detail and offers a natural vignette effect. Well done, great detail documented and emotion.

Rasta Cousins - I'm always looking for alternative approaches to family narratives within photography, and you have delivered that with this entry. A square frame offers a unique approach and with the styling, lighting and pose this really relates well to children's fashion photography! I encourage you to continue this approach to capturing family members with this almost studio like approach. Well done!

Meet the expert judge

I'm really interested in the measures of perception within this landscape portrait, as it lends its self to a street fashion genre, with the slight distortion of the shoes being larger. Great detail captured throughout, too. Your inclusion of the location with your subject at a wide angle point makes this really successful!
