A stunning and emotive portrait. Great technique to use a shallow depth of field to really bring the main facial features alive. This is such a modern and contemporary portrait that would grace any gallery or magazine. The straight to camera stare adds additional suspence within the expression in a way that we cannot look away. The tight crop only adds to the intensity of the image. The background uncluttered again puts all the focus on the eyes and the drops of tears running down the face. A stunning photograph that is brave and open to interpretation. Well done.
This was so close to my top 10. The emotion is all over the faces of the team. The way they are all in their own little worlds is lovely from the child looking at the coach to the boy looking in the other direction. The use of black and white works well and adds to the drama of the picture as does the tight crop and shallow depth of field so that we spend all our time looking at them. This image shows us the power and importance of sports to communities and culturally within society. Well done.
A classic of the documentary genre. Stunning framing by the photographer and using a shallow depth of field really places all our attention on the woman within the frame. Our eye then follows the rail tracks to the blurred pople in the background. The use of a soft black and white really allows us to see all the detail without the harsh contrast which given the light would have been easy to do. Subtle and candid. This is a great example of the very best in environmental portrait photography. Superb.
A high contrast documentray portrait set within the street. It is a powerful image of what life maybe like on the street. I love the tiger like blanket and the Messi football top the lady wears. She has a strong expression on her face and the pose the photographer has seen with the stare and hand is very well captured. The simple wall background mean we focus on the person. Never easy a subject to photograph but this is done with love and care. Well done.
Playful and fun. This photograph really stood out from the crowd. It breaks many rules in photography about composition and it's the stronger for doing so. Great technique and exposure. It would have been easy to lose detail in the shirt but its full of information Well done. I love the expression on the girls face and this works so well against the blue sky. This is a really modern photograph that fits into fashion and documentary as much as it does a picture of a friend. Really well done.
The colors really pop in this charmng portrait of two girls on the sofa. Are they posing for the camera, watching T.V or both? The light on the faces is lovely against the darker background and the poses the girls adopt really work well. The facial expressions are incredible and really keep our attention focused on them. The photographer has done an incredible job keeping the children interested enough and for long enough to make such a powerful yet fun image. Well done to all of you.
A wonderful example of an environmental portrait. This image works on several levels. It's a powerful portrait that tells us the viewer a little about the person and the place he is situated in. It also really shows the photographers ability to get close to people, gain trust and then have the ability to make such a powerful image. Great technique and the use of black and white puts the image firmly into the documentary tradition. Lovely light and the small touches around the frame just add a little into the mans life. Powerful picture which will work so well within a larger series. Well done.
An incredible photograph that brings many elements together in perfect harmony. The stunning quiet location, the stormy weather almost monochromatic and the wonderful individual bathed in light and with the illuminated pink clothes that just jump out of the frame combine to make the most stunning formal picture with every element working so well. The technique is superb as is the placement of the central figure that shows the photographers ability to make such a powerful photograph. A stunning image that cannot be faulted. Very well done.

Such a powerful and expressive portrait. The tight crop and saturated colors really adds to the impact of this great portrait. The stare to camera is intense and this again only adds to the drama of the image. It is hard to look away from the expression and eyes but it's also difficult to make eye contact in the first place. I would love to know what the young boy is thinking, we will never know but the photographer has captured an incredible intense image. Well done as it's not easy to get so close to make such an impactful portrait.
The tight crop, the stunning neon light works so well within this scene. the light hitting the jacket offers a futuristic feel to the image and the fact the person is walking away from the photographer adds to the suspense within the frame. The cinematic quality really comes across in the picture and it really helps us place this picture within a film we feel it could have come from. Great capture.
The intense stare looking out is what really draws us into the picture. Our eye is then taken around the frame. It has all the feel of a candid image even though we know the photographer asked permission. This is a good thing to do but it's then very difficult to create such a natural looking photograph as the subject knows they are being photographed. Of course we will never know what he is looking at and that is what makes the image so full of intrigue. Great capture.
The isolation of the face and hand against a black background really brings all the attention and emotion to the face. The light that runs across the frame is stunning and really elevates the picture. The expression on the model is lovely and the hand just really frames the face perfectly. The rim light behind the hair gives a depth to the image which it would not have had without it given the black background. Really well done. Superb technique and full of emotion. What are they thinking? Lovely.

A really simple and delightful portrait. Great use and understanding of the soft evening light and the shallow depth of field allows us the viewers to really enjoy the softness of the trees and plants in the background. The warm colors work well within the landscape and the placement of the child within the frame is perfect. A really lovely and engaging photograph of a small child who seems so happy to pose for the camera. Wonderful and would look great in a frame on a wall. Well done.
A great example of an environmental candid portrait. I love how each of the four people are doing something totally different and unique. They all have different expressive facial expressions and the hands become important within the picture as they all work in relation to what it is they are doing. It's a classic and would work well in a magazine. The use of black and white firmly places it within a documentary tradition. Superb.
