A stunning contemporary portrait of youth. The powerful confrontational stare and hand gesture associated with heavy metal really is intense. The shallow depth of field allows us to really concentrate on the eyes of the person directly looking back at the camera whilst throwing the background out of focus. The subtle muted colors work really well, so we pick up on the small details like the chain around the neck and the girl in the background. The close up crop adds intensity to the image and the splattered mud gives us a clue that they could be attending a concert? A cracking environmental portrait. Superb. Well done.
A great capture of a live event and just the appropriate amount of post-production so the image stands out without to much interference. The wide angle lens is really well controlled without distortion and the lasers have again been dealt with well not getting any flair. It's not easy making images at concerts and this is a great example of timing and technique to produce an atmospheric portrait of a front man. Well done.

It could almost be a Lowery painting of his famous matchstick men. It's so interesting to spend time observing the clusters and groups of children and how they interact with each other, the space and in some cases the camera. The quality of light really lifts the scene so we get these bursts of blue and red against the pastel wall colors. I'm drawn to the young child at the back of the group, seemingly not interested in the rest of the group but that is the power of street candid photography. The ability to see and find unique moments that only the camera can do. Great crop and a well constructed street image. Well done.
This image really encapsulates summertime and fairs. The classic ice-cream van is a tradition at these events even if good weather is not always guaranteed. The slightly elevated camera angle allows us the viewer to see everything that is happening within the shot. The bubbles are just the added extra element that really make this picture about happy moments. Well done.
This was so close to my top 10. I really enjoy the use of space and the framing of the individual in traditional clothing. This works so well against the neutral background. It makes you think- why are they there? it feels otherworldly. The pose is lovely and I Like the movement on the hand but a tiny thing is the focus on the face which could have been a little sharper, it does not really distract from this being a cracking image. Well done.
This image is full of drama and concentration. For a split moment the only thing that matters to this young child in shot is the bucket and sand on his spade. The use of black and white is really interesting and takes the photograph away from the more traditional seaside images we see. It works all the better for this. The shall depth of field and tight crop mean we spend all our time looking at what he is doing and the wonderful hand movements really add the drama as he carefully try's not to spill any sand. Stunning capture.
A wonderful composed street family portrait. The smiles on all the faces say everything we need to know. They are happy to be photographed. The use of black and white means that no distracting colors get in the way of how we read and enjoy this neutral black and white picture. The tight crop works really well and the position of the hands of the adult carefully bringing the children together is lovely, especially the way the way the little girl at the front holds on to the her Mothers? thumb. Such a charming and warm portrait.
The strong use of high contrast black and white works really well in creating the mood for this picture. Lazing around between the flowers has been highlighted by the high camera position looking over the subject and the addition of the flower pattern on the dress only adds to the sense that this has been a controlled shoot. The subtle vignetting around the edges to darken the scene so that our eye goes to the main subject is very well done and creates a real film still like quality to the photograph. A superb controlled photograph.
The high contrast is really well controlled and works so well in this image. The sense of calm and quietness can be seen in the persons relaxed sitting position and we can imagine ourselves in their place sitting listening to the water. The light on the shoes is lovely and the strong use of high contrast black and white and the great formal composition adds to the quality of this image. Great capture.
Friends together. Beautifully captured by the photographer. The tight crop and the way they interact with the camera works so well. The use of black and white firmly places this within a classic documentary tradition which is fitting for the subject. The exposure is well controlled with lovely details in the shadow areas. The man on the left looks like he could be a famous actor? A great environmental portrait. Well done.
I really love the balance between the skater showing off there skills against the background and the positioning of the photographer to make this great capture. Stunning technique and wonderful use of the light coming from the street lamp to create a wonderful rim light around the body. The crop cannot be bettered and the slight camera angle gives it that snap-shot aesthetic that works well with the subject. A great capture. Well done.
This is such a difficult skill to realize and all credit must go to the photographer for having the ability to control the exposure and light in such a precise way. The highlights on the dancer are wonderful and the details in the background are well held and not easy given the amount of light coming into shot from the window in the top right hand corner. The crop is perfect with the wonderful shadow from the leg which really gives a balance to the image (no pun intended). Beautifully sharp and a great example of timing and formal picture making skills and the dancer plays there part perfectly as well. Everyone involved should be commended in making this beautiful photograph.

The way the people move within the frame and within the space works so well. It looks like it could be a film still from a science fiction movie. The monochromatic ground and what the people wear is lifted by the wonderful deep blue sky, creating a strong narrative within the frame. They don't look like they are just walking up a hill? A really intriguing and technically excellent image. Well done.
