A beautifully seen, captured and rendered portrait. The window light creates a wonderful atmosphere, and the protagonist's gaze, looking out of the window, suggests myriad thought-provoking narratives. I particularly like the subtle reflection behind the subject's head. The mono treatment has been well realised. Good work.

Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘People’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘Animals’ and ‘Landscapes’.
White Sands looks like a wonderful place to take photos. This is a well-captured image that works. I'd be tempted to suggest that the sky feels a little over-processed, perhaps be a little more restrained. Otherwise, this is a cracking start on the journey with your new camera. Look forward to seeing more...
An intriguing and thought-provoking photograph loaded with subtle nuances. In this instance, I feel the flatness of the black and white tones works well and speaks to the subject matter. The composition is carefully considered and I especially like the position of the light switch as a counter balance, perhaps a metaphoric one?

At first, I wondered what this image, seemingly devoid of a person, was doing in a 'people' category, but after reading the caption, the image took on a whole new meaning and became laced with a human presence. The objects became loaded with meaning and reference to the tragic event in Beslan. This is thought-provoking stuff!
