New Joiners - People #562

August 2025

A classic picture from one of the most photographed places in the world. This well judged image of a Gondolier waiting around for a customer is very well balanced to the left of center. We then get to see the stunning canal vista of Venice. The highlights on his hat standout against the darker saturated background in what is a beautifully constructed photograph. Very well done.

The history of the bridge is visible in the wooden panels and intricate light stands which sets the scene for the action within this image as we see several people and a family engage with the bridge as they spend time crossing it. The decorative buildings in the background only add to the splendor of the setting and the boy in the foreground looking back suggests the view is as good in the other direction. A complex pattern of lines add to the image as does the subtle soft tones. A great capture.

The sense of loneliness is echoed within this photograph. The wonderful spotted umbrella really draws us to the main person within the frame and their expression and gaze directed out of frame works so well. I have a 'Lost in Translation' moment when I look at this image and it really takes me to other places. A great grab and powerful capture. Well done.

A stunning contemplative portrait of an individual set within the landscape. The background with its epic scale draws us into the space and the person who looks almost biblical. The exposure and highlights within the clothing and pale background are very well controlled in this intriguing environmental portrait. The dappled light across the face and body only add to the drama. Very well done.

Brooding and haunting. this lovely portrait is well judged in its technique and framing of an older lady working hard to catch fish. The dark almost monochromatic color palate works well with only her top really offering any real light and color. The soft out of focus background really sets the tone for this stunning portrait. Well done.

A slightly surreal image of a posed guitar player set within a chicken field. It works because of the quality of light and the skill in framing the main subject between the animals. The shallow depth of field and hazy light add to the summer vibes of festivals and spending time outdoors. The highlights are very well controlled especially with the main light directly coming into the lens. A precise and cool image that takes you on a journey of the music we all listen to ourselves. Well done.

The stunning rich colors remind me of the Kodachrome film era and the mirroring of the telephones across from each other is such a strange sight in 2025. The young boys making the calls with their backpacks on create almost a sense of being identical and this only adds to the lovely formal framing of the image. A photograph that is rich in photographic history as well as its moment in time. Classic. Well done.

This is like climbing to the top of the world. The positioning and angle of the woman climbing the staircase is wonderful and graceful. It could almost be a still from a movie. The silhouettes and shadows combine to make a powerful composition in what is a great image that takes us on a journey. Well done.

A timeless image of a person feeding the birds. What elevates this image from many is the man's expression, totally at peace and comfortable in his surroundings and the detailing within the birds. The black and white gives the image an historical feel and the placement of others around tells us this is in a park setting. A great capture, well done.

A great environmental portrait in which showcases the photographers keen eye and ability to make a great image quickly. It's fun and contemporary with good technique and timing. The cheeky expression of the paramedic is perfect as is the timing of the server putting mayo onto the food. A classic slice of life. Well done.

A subtle and well controlled image. The beautiful color tonal range of warm browns within the clothes work well against the soft evening light. The shallow depth of field places the focus on the person holding center stage within the frame and the glance away from camera suggests he is looking at something important. A quiet and calm portrait that works very well because of its quietness.

The tight crop and placement of the little girl is perfect. The color of the brown door works so well against the light pink dress she wears and the curls in the hair are matched by the grain in the doorway. The placement of the feet on top of each other is so cute and playful in what is a lovely capture. I could imagine this framed on a wall in a home taking pride of place. Just lovely.

A stunning and timeless portrait of a young girl surrounded by family. The tight crop allows us the viewer to concentrate on the girl and that stare straight back to camera which is hypnotic and holds us for a moment. The central position within the frame works very well and the use of black and white means we do not have any distracting bursts of color to take our gaze away from the main figure. The exposure is well controlled and the highlights especially work well against the darker clothes and background. Overall a stunning and brooding portrait. Excellent capture.

A lovely capture of maybe a young boy with his grandad? The distance between them is fun and that mirroring has been seen in so many films that this could be a film still. The expressions as they both look in the same direction out of shot suggests something has interested them both at the same time in this beautifully captured picture.
