This highly evocative portrait really draws you into the emotion that is clearly seen on her face. The elevated camera angle as the eyes look quietly up to the lens works well and the early morning light casts a wonderful blue hue across the entire frame. The light tones of the skin stand out against the blurred coastal background and the visible breath from the cold air only adds to the cinematic appeal in what is a superb environmental image that really stands out. Congratulations. Very well done.

This classic black and white documentary environmental scene really takes me back to the great images by the Magnum Photojournalists. The relationship between the two people to the path they are on and the sea behind really work well together in telling a story and the positioning by the photographer is first rate, as we feel we are present in the picture with them. Great capture and timing.
We can all imagine the quality of light as it floods into the kitchen on a summer evening. This wonderful study of a family member hard at work within this environment is a joy to look at. Our eye is taken across the entire frame from the colored stacked plastic pots to the warm highlights hitting the back of the persons top in this great capture.
This is a great example of an environmental portrait. The type of image we see in editorial magazines. The highly saturated colors work well in this environment and are balanced perfectly between the individual and out of focus background which shows great awareness of aperture controls and depth of field. The light hitting the face elevates the individual within the frame in what is a stunning capture. Well done.
This wonderful scene really stood out from all the other entries in the way it has been composed and framed. We the audience are given a tiny glimpse of the massive job it must be to paint a ship. The camera angle is really interesting giving a birds eye view of the space and the color palate works so well as does the precision of the lines. The clean and graphic angles only add to this intriguing picture. Well done, great capture.
This stunning and powerful portrait works on so many levels. The quality of light really shapes the face and torso, the warm tonal range of the skin against the blurred background compliment each other and the exposure is perfect with the eye in shadow just having enough information in to really stand out. The tight crop focuses our attention in this eye catching portrait. Well done.
This contemporary fashion style image really grabs your attention from the vibrant colors of the clothes which work perfectly together to the tight crop and positioning of the model. The out of focus backdrop of the road and houses situates the model very well in this stunning capture. I could imagine this as part of a wider series of images. Well done.
This majestic overhead photograph perfectly showcases the drama and body movements of the ice-skaters below. The use of black and white means we are not diverted away by color so we can concentrate on the performers and the relationship they have with each other and with the space within the frame. A lovely capture. Well done.
This was so close to my top 10. I love the framing and use of black and white and the intensity of the stare into camera really does elevate this beautiful and unique portrait. I would have liked the image to have been made a little brighter overall in post production but such a small issue in what is a lovely capture. Well done.
A picture where all the elements come together to create a perfect scene. The wall with the graffiti on leads our eye towards the individual walking with the brightly colored umbrella where we then take in the lovely rainbow overhead. A stunning composition that works so well in this dramatic urban picture. Well done.
This delightful image of two children playing is beautifully captured in this environmental portrait. The warm quality of light and smiles on the faces really work well together and the timing is spot on with the little girls hands still raised as she swings her sister into the air. The color saturation really gives a dynamic feel to the image in what is a tender and loving photograph. Really well done.
This stunning, moody cinematic almost monochromatic film noir style close up portrait really does stand out. The light directly hitting the face allows us the viewer to see the smoke exhaled from the mouth which is the only subtle color within the image. The tight crop works well as our focus concentrates around the center of the frame and the mood that this creates is haunting. Superb capture. Well done.
Meet the expert judge
This highly detailed close up black and white portrait perfectly captures the wonderful facial expression and quality of light that runs across the face and background. The exposure is beyond reproach with the highlights and shadows both well controlled and showing all the details. The tight crop works so well as we move across the frame in this emotive and beautifully controlled image. Very well done.
This wonderfully constructed and composed portrait really shows the visual skills of the photographer within the frame. The clever use of using the person in the foreground as a means to bring attention to the individual walking towards the camera is very well conceived. The never point a camera to the light idea works so well in this instance with great technique and this allows for a lovely rim light around the lady. A stunning portrait. Very well done.
