New Joiners - People #591

January 2026

A confident and accomplished study of an interior, where light is handled with care. The dark, low-key black-and-white conversion adds a sombre note, yet the image remains calm and contemplative, with a quiet sense of serenity running through the frame. Good work.

I love the performative nature of this intriguing, thought-provoking image. The narrative feels deliberate, using metaphor to articulate a personal response to the world rather than a fixed message. The composition is striking, with diagonal lines working hard to create tension, direction and a sense of unease.

The bold, confident use of negative space works beautifully here, creating a strong sense of balance and harmony in the composition. The subject’s gentle smile feels natural and unforced, which is never easy to achieve. The monochrome tones are handled with care, adding subtle depth without distraction. Lovely work.

Wow, I love the expression in this artfully captured image. The focus is incredibly sharp on the subject, with the background falling away beautifully. That separation really helps emphasise the emotion, giving the photograph energy, presence and a sense of immediacy.

I love the humour in this engaging portrait. Those look like some serious scissors for nasal hair, definitely him rather than me. The relationship between the blue-framed mirror, the out-of-focus yellow sign and the concentration on the protagonist’s face is well observed and holds the composition together. Good work.

I love the way the colours bounce around the frame in this engaging image. I have wandered the streets of Bridgetown with a camera many times, and I am sure I have photographed that pink wall too. While I am usually wary of portraits made from a distance, without the subject’s awareness, this captures an authentic, unguarded moment.

I love the way the ice reads like the teeth of a giant shark, or something equally menacing. Set against that visual threat, the subject’s cool, calm demeanour is quietly compelling. The contrast builds a subtle nautical narrative that feels thoughtful rather than gimmicky. Good work.

The brooding mood in this striking image feels as though it could sit comfortably in a campaign for a contemporary clothing brand. The heavy sky, thrown out of focus using what looks like the iPhone Portrait mode, works well. The muted colour palette is particularly pleasing. Good work.

This is an impressive self-portrait. The technical challenge of making a self-portrait is significant in itself, and you have added thoughtful, creative layers on top of that. Kudos. The painterly quality suits the image well and gives it a confident, considered finish.

There is something about the light that feels distinctly Californian. The moment I saw the image, that sense of place was immediate. The light carries the photograph, but so does the feeling of anticipation, with the protagonists gazing out of the window, quietly imagining the journey ahead.

This is a cracking silhouette shot, genuinely one of the strongest I have seen. The low angle of view works particularly well, giving the figure presence and authority. It is a shame the watermark disrupts the composition. I appreciate their role in protection and promotion, but here it detracts from an otherwise excellent image.

The colour palette in this simple but highly effective portrait is beautifully judged. The orange of the armbands complements the soft blue hues, creating balance. Placing the subject centrally simplifies the composition and gives the image a calm, minimalist vibe. Good work.

You’re right, this image works particularly well because the subject is looking out of the frame. The controlled studio lighting and the carefully positioned jacket and watch give it a clear editorial fashion feel, almost like an advertisement. It is good to see you collaborating with former classmates too, keeping skills sharp and, more importantly, maintaining old connections and friendships.

Wow, I love the colour flowing out of this joyful tulip bonanza. The clothing, the flowers and even the Crocs are all oozing colourful energy. Observing tourists interacting in moments like this makes for fascinating subject matter, handled here with a light, attentive touch. Good work.
