New Joiners - People #606

May 2026

The low angle of view, the considered posing and the graffiti-laden setting all combine to create a gritty, grainy portrait packed with character. The clever post-processing, adding contrast and pulling back the colours, only adds to this distinct vibe. Skilfully done..

I'm really intrigued by this image. There's clearly an interesting narrative emerging here. I like the fact that the viewer is left thinking, but perhaps a title or caption might nudge us in the right direction. That said, I like the ambiguity too. Sometimes not knowing is part of the process.

Love the use of high-contrast black-and-white in this thought-provoking image. It gives the whole image a graphic vibe. The blinds in the background add to the story and also bring a striking graphical element to the composition. Lovely work indeed.

The bleakness of this composition, paired with a cunning use of high-contrast sunlight for graphic effect, works a treat. And the lone figure on a bicycle in the distance adds a poignant human presence. A small detail that speaks eloquently to the narrative of an abandoned wool mill.

The restrained and formal composition, along with the considered posing, works beautifully here. The woodland setting is perfect, but it is the relationship between the gaze of the protagonist and the owl that really makes this image shine. A magical moment. Lovely work.

Wow. The energy, the joy, the sheer happiness. It jumps out of every pixel. The black-and-white tones are beautifully rendered, especially the delicate white detail of the dress. And the composition, using the car as a frame, works perfectly. One of the finest wedding shots I have seen. Kudos.

The wonderful hues of yellow and pink grooving around this frame are sublime, especially with the little flecks of blue and green adding accent notes. These colourful fabrics, blurred beautifully through the use of a wide aperture at f/2.2, form a lovely frame around the perfectly captured face of the subject, the star of the show.

What a beautiful study of this woman working her batik. Photographs of people doing things are a wonderful way to make engaging portraits, and this lovely composition is a fine example. The light, of course, helps too. It lifts the subject and adds layers of depth.

There's a real cinematic groove to the camera position in this engaging image. The chess player in red is the focal point of the story, and the focus point too. The hand mid-motion adds to the narrative. Clever framing and a cunning use of shallow depth of field blur both background and foreground, drawing the eye right where it needs to be.

Colour, silhouette, light and a bold composition. The yellow, the blue, and the black all come together beautifully in this frame. The protagonist is positioned dead centre, and the horizon cuts through the middle of the fame. Two compositional 'rules' broken, and yet it works. Proof that the rules are really just guides, and ignoring them can deliver something special.

Love the experimental vibe in this intriguing image. The face of Chaplin still comes through despite all the movement. And love the idea of mixing intentional camera movement (ICM) with portraiture too. Not a typical pairing, but as you've proved here, it can be a very successful one. Nicely done.

The powerful intensity behind this engaging portrait really comes through. The penetrating gaze of the jiu-jitsu instructor makes an instant connection with the viewer. Clever use of black and white adds to the story, too, giving a gritty, grainy vibe that works perfectly with the subject. Nice work.

What a lovely silhouette. We often see a silhouette or two in this challenge, but this is one of the finest. Delightfully considered, very romantic and hitting just the right notes. And I love the two sailing boats in the distance. They somehow seem to echo the lovebirds in the foreground. Beautifully done.

What a wonderful capture, one that speaks artfully to the times we live in. The story here is all about being present and not being present. The main protagonists sit in a gallery, backs to the wall, eyes glued to a device with the art behind them. Nicely seen.

The use of light in this restrained composition is perfect. Shooting towards the light (contre-jour, if you want to sound fancy) is a wonderfully creative way to work. The lens flare adds to the ambience, too, and speaks nicely to the ambling nature of the image title. Good work.
