This is a very inventive way of showing life at night in a disco/dancehall where the photographer has used figures across the whole frame of the photograph - both silhouetted and lit. The effect is a surreal montage of figures in a colourful landscape of social interaction, dotted with lovely little pools of green, purple, yellow and blue light. A very worthy winner! congratulations.

Meet the expert judge

An original photograph where the photographer has thought in a different way in order to say something about a night out. Has he/she stumbled accross somebody who's just had too much to drink and wants to sleep it off right then and there?.. or is it a friend who has decided to be the actor in a conceptual scene?.. no matter; this is an intriguing, beguiling image where the viewer can make their mind up as to what's going on. The horizontal figure is nicely positioned - a long lens used from low on the ground, with a shallow depth of field, renderring the urban night surroundings into a soft-focus and evocative backdrop; the light hitting the tarmac by his feet helping to make this scene so memorable. Well done!.

What we do after dark, in pubs, bars and clubs, in theatres and restaurants, on the street, in taxis and buses. Intrepid photographers who get in the face of this enjoyment, often getting carried along with it as well, document this expression of the human need to socialise, let go, and reward ourselves for our daily efforts.

What a vivid scene! Rich, sharp colourful and a visual feast as you look down at the whole fairground below. You even have the setting in which this all takes place as you see the tall, ghostly-lit trees surrounding the human activity, as well as the mist/smoke floating above the people. I love the way the photographer has composed this image with the two girls - bottom centre - looking down with us, onto this colourful scene. The kind of image you can stare at for several minutes because there is so much to it. A brilliantly taken photograph. Congratulations!
