The bold rich colours of the landscape really make this image stand out. I imagine the colours have been enhanced a little in processing, but they have just avoided becoming over-saturated. The panoramic format of the image woks well, as we get to see a wonderful sweeping expanse of the landscape, to be able to absorb the beauty of the surroundings. Good detail and contrasts throughout. A lovely image with a great abstract feel. The soft lighting brings the gently undulating countryside to life, as the shapes and forms of the countryside are revealed. Plenty of variation for the eye to explore, and the little building acts as an initial focal point. I especially like the inclusion of the brown field in the upper part of the image. Everything is sharply focused, but you have managed to capture a delicate softness, creating a lovely mood to the shot. Congratulations on your third place finish.
I love this type of landscape image, recognisable for what it is, but with a strong abstract feel. Another scene which I feel is enhanced by the exclusion of the sky, as all attention can focus on the magical colours, shapes and forms of the rocky landscape below. The colours are vibrant, and the pops of dark green help break up the orangy browns nicely. Everything looks to be in sharp focus which reveals all the details, and the bold contrasts also give a real feeling of depth to the scene. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
The gorgeously varied hues and your capture of the gentle undulations in the sweeping countryside is what initially drew me to this image. The golden browns made this image a little different from similar rural scenes which had a predominance of green. The way the light falls across the land creates some lovely patterns and emphasises the shapes of the gentle hills, which you have captured well. The clump of trees and building in the mid-distance adds a further point of interest as the eye explores the scene. Congratulations on your winning image.

Your capture of the glorious light is a great attraction to this image. I also love the changing wave of colours from the cooler blues and purples at the top, to the rich warm golden shades in the foreground. This looks like the type of magical moment that is only fleeting, as the light can alter so quickly and in few short seconds the moment is gone. I don't know whether you were present in this spot by careful planning and patience or by happy accident, but whichever, we are lucky to witness the results when viewing this glorious image. This image presents a lovely view looking down onto the misted land below, with a patchwork of rich colours. The mist has softened the features in the background, but I really like the inclusion of the swirl of woodland cross the centre of the frame. Great detail in the shot, including the ribbed textues of the fields in the near distance. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.
There is a beautiful feeling of lightness about this image, which gives a real sense of a great breath of fresh air. I love the soft pastel colours of the hillside and corresponding reflections, allowing the darker line of trees to really stand out. The white house is well positioned in the composition and adds a sense of scale and majesty to the surroundings. The use of a slow shutter speed has nicely calmed the reflections which still retain a natural look. Congratulations on your second place finish.
What I especially like about this image is the naturalness of the shot, with no over-editing or harsh processing effects. Being picky I may have been tempted to crop off the nearest vegetation at the very bottom of the frame which have become blurred due to the depth of field, but everything in the main scene is nicely focussed. The white farmhouse is well positioned within the frame and provides a strong initial focal point as we get a view down from the hilltops to the valley below. A beautiful natural image, anothr fine example of an image benefiting from the omission of the sky, as it allows full focus to be on the green and pleasant land. Well done on your top ten placing.

This contest is for your rural landscape photographs which have no sky showing in the image. By moving focus away from a more traditional landscape composition, it allows features of the landscape, such as shapes, forms and patterns to become stronger elements of the shot, as opposed to showing a more straightforward scenic view. Images must be captured in a rural or non-urban setting, and land must dominate the image, although bodies of water may be present. The key point of this contest is that your photos of rural landscapes must not include any sky in the image. Entries can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to your entries.

Meet the judge
Unlike the majority of entries which showed a wide and sweeping landscape, here we see a more enclosed and intimate scene, which I like a lot. Superb composition of the shot with a good viewpoint and the mossy wall acting as a leading line to take us down this very appealing rocky footpath into the woods beyond. It can often be very difficult when photographing a scene such as this to produce an image with an accurate representation of the colours, especially the greens, but you have done a great job. I love the textures you have captured on the wonderful moss covered wall, with good balance of highlights and shadows. A late entry into my top ten, but an image I like and appreciate the more I look at it. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.
