Oil and Water

November 2017

I've liked this one from the start, I don't usually go for ones like this with loads of oil drops but it's a great idea with the Union Jack as a backdrop, not to out of focus so you can make it out, makes for a great oil and water image, a worthy top ten. Well done.

This is another one that caught my eye from the start, I normally prefer nice bright colours but the dark hues you have used here gives the image an other worldly outer space feel, I may give it a go myself, good job.

This is a superb example of oil and water and is exactly what I was looking for. It isn't easy to get everything in focus but you have achieved excellent overall sharpness and the bold bright colours makes the image just pop off the screen, a well deserved first place.

Lovely sharp image, having done a few myself now I know how tricky it can be to get everything in focus but you've nailed it, I was instantly attracted to the greyish hues in most of the shot then the yellow oil circle poking in the top left, very good.

Lovely use of colour, the yelllows and light blues compliment each other, the image just jumps off the screen, I like the large oil circle taking up half the image on the left surrounded by smaller circles, overall sharpness is good, just a couple of rogue blurry oil drops but a fantastic job, well done.

Another image that struck me when I saw it, at first I thought it was little too dark, but I kept going back to look at it, the more I looked the more I saw, the coloured background becoming more focused as the oil drops get smaller and disapating in the larger drops. The darkness surrounding the colours draws you in, a fabulous example.

I've just recently tried my hand at this type of photography, the results can be amazing. All you need is a clear glass bowl, water, washing up liquid and cooking oil. Add a backdrop, maybe colourful wrapping up paper, coloured feathers, or basically anything colourful. Ideally a macro lens or extension tubes, or for an alternative try a reversing ring to turn your current lens into a macro. Check the internet for oil and water inspiration. Have fun with it.
